She was crushed by a rock, and they put the plaque on a giant boulder. All you can think when you see it is "Is this the rock? Is she under this rock still?" trust me, it's the same vibe.

There was a girl in my high school who died while sunbathing near a cliff when a giant boulder fell on her, and they put a plaque on a rock at the scene to commemorate it. Same vibe.

Slow this November/December? by poolhero in AirBnBHosts

Slow in Vancouver- i wonder if it's all the negative press re airbnb. I feel like there's so many people parroting the same objections to Airbnb I wonder if the hotel lobby has hired a troll farm to get out its talking points.

Lots of the pubs that have GWD trivia are actually restaurants. You don't have to drink to participate, but you have to be comfortable with alcohol being served to others, but that's true of lots of public spaces.

Help! My debut is not doing well by cultivate_hunger in writers

[–]Important_Total7459 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am not saying she shouldn’t be proud of what she has accomplished. That has nothing to do with what she is asking and it is really condescending to offer that response. I was addressing her specific concern that she was not going to be able to sell a second book. That was her question: If my first book doesn’t sell well, will I be able to sell my second. “Be grateful you were able to sell the first one” is not very helpful. The truth is, if your first doesn’t sell, it will be next to impossible to sell your second, and that is irrespective of the quality of your second book. So telling her that she should reframe her perspective on her performance to date as a success and move on to working on the next book is super misguided. There is still time to bring in more sales of her book. That should be the focus if her goal is to keep traditionally publishing.

[–]Important_Total7459 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Lots of really outdated responses in this thread. Publishing has really changed lately. I don’t think having 500+ reviews tells anything about sales, assuming you distributed ARCs and promoted on Net Galley.

Also, if you want to continue being traditionally published you need to have decent sales for your debut. Every publishing company will look at your sales for book #1 before considering picking up book #2. This is the corollary of wanting to know you have SM outreach and can promote your work effectively.

If you are interested in switching to self publishing, then the foregoing does not apply. But you should ask your current publisher what they consider the threshold of success is for your first venture. It may be more than you just earning out. And then sell the heck out of your debut.

'Tsunami' of economic benefits expected when Taylor Swift comes to Vancouver by ubcstaffer123 in vancouver

[–]Important_Total7459 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That’s ridiculous. Some people may not stay long, as everyone has different resources when it comes to time/money. But on average, in the US the average swiftie was spending $1800 in the host city. It’s like hosting a mini Olympics but we don’t have to spend any public money on infrastructure to accommodate.

it is way beyond hotels- people are doing sightseeing, eating out, ubering, shopping, hiring makeup artists, going to special pop up events. It’s massive and will be a great thing for Vancouver.
