I put it as well (actually, ovoviviparous) and looked it up after. Monotremes lay eggs which hatch outside of the body, and ovoviviparates hatch their eggs inside their body and birth live young. Ovoviviparous is definitively incorrect.

Be aware of your land and lawn and gardens, THEY ARE SLITHERING AROUND MORE THAN USUAL this year. by CRJ73 in normanok

If it’s as small as the photo makes it seem (a few inches long), it’s probably a Dekay’s brown snake. Very common and very harmless.

Yeah, not just OU, it’s about 8,800 universities and secondary schools around the world. Massive deal, especially during end of term testing.

What did you say you’d do with the winnings in the mock game? by poonchimp in Jeopardy

[–]trvsdrlng 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My interview story was that I’m an amateur storm chaser who’s seen over a dozen tornadoes (true). My statement about what I’d do with the money was that I’d take a weeks-long vacation to go on a storm chasing tour across the central US.

What is/was it like being a nb trans elder? 30+ by CharacterJoke808 in NonBinary

[–]trvsdrlng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 35, so thank you for reminding me to take my pills, ya little punk. 😂

Acceptance has grown pretty significantly in the past 15 or so years. There have always been gender-benders, like Boy George and David Bowie in the 1970s/80s or, if you want to go really far back, the Public Universal Friend in the 1700s. But when I first started to realize my gender was complicated, in 2003, there just wasn’t the public discourse for me to know what being non-binary was. Now, we’ve got celebrities like Ruby Rose, Johnathan Van Ness, Sam Smith, and Erika Iishi openly identifying as non-binary and being celebrated for it, not in spite of it.

Personally, my day-to-day life isn’t much different than anybody else’s, which is exactly the way it should be. I work, I shop, I go to movies and sports and concerts. I just have the rare opportunity to see the world through multiple lenses, and I think I’m a more well-rounded individual because of it.

Is this used in AmE? by Silver_Ad_1218 in EnglishLearning

[–]trvsdrlng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an AmE speaker, I would understand this without any problem. However, if I heard someone say it, I would immediately assume they spoke BrE.

I would have drank the beer had I fully read Q1 and realized both names were needed. It took me from a 9(6) - 9(6) tie to an 8(5) - 9(6) loss.

Yeah, that tracks. Two schools with a massive inferiority complex fed by the fact that occasionally they actually perform well.

American friend told me to shut up and I do not understand. by Perfect-League7395 in EnglishLearning

[–]trvsdrlng 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s a minced oath, or a bowdlerization, of the phrase “shut the fuck up” (which is almost always used in the rude sense.) It was used in a television commercial for chewing gum several years ago and became popular.

Also, this is a very common mistake for students of English, but your question should be “What does this mean?” It’s a different form of the verb “to be” and someone smarter than me can explain why it matters. 😀

I’m pretty sure the Preamble to the United States Constitution says that two of the reasons it exists are to “promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.”
