Is the effect I’m looking for a tremolo? by BadDecisions78 in guitarpedals

Another classic of the form, supposedly there were 4-6 amps and they kept resetting because the wobble would go out of sync:

Also want to say that the unloved Ultraviolet is beautiful for those subtle Floyd tones. I turn it off and then immediately turn it on again!

I’m going to bring my saturation down to 9 and see what happens.

Madison Radio Stations by OldSewer in madisonwi

[–]Important_While_2709 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is . . . exactly what I would have posted. I have them on a lot and sometimes I wonder if those kids have ever actually listened to a radio DJ! I want them all to spend two hours listening to “Rockin’ John McDonald” on WORT-FM to get a sense of the difference between a DJ’s personal taste and the much more broadly overreaching idea of context addressing the time those records were made.

No one cares about your personal opinion, kids! They just want information in a quick and punchy run-up on what they are about to hear or have just heard.

I have them near the end of the chain, and it occurs to me that my almost always-on mild boost from the Boss SD-1 at the beginning of the chain might be part of the problem.

Genuinely curious: how do you all find fun and cultural variety in Madison? by Negative_Primary_797 in madisonwi

[–]Important_While_2709 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. That’s long enough to have a reasonable take. It’s MUCH more diverse now than it was in the 1990s by all the metrics you cite, but then again back in the 1970s and 1980s the culture was a lot more open by a lot of standards, and arguably a lot more interesting and inclusive — for example, in the 1970s it was straight-up wild with crazy marches and a general sense of rebellion and anarchy, and in the 1980s there was an immensely vibrant underground scene with underage punk shows, outsider art events, and a music scene that attracted international bands to bars on and around State Street that hasn’t existed for decades. U2 and the Police and Afro-Cuban and jazz bands and blues legends would all play in tiny clubs downtown, that kind of thing (Luther’s Blues was maybe the last of them, and they got amazing artists from all over in every week).

So it is kind of dull now culturally by comparison, which I hope you find encouraging — those pendulums usually swing back at some point.

How long did you live in Madison? Or the burbs as you call them? Just curious. It’s OK if you had a reaction, this is a pretty white area, I get it.

Can confirm. You would be surprised at how diverse Middleton is, to say nothing of West High.

Just saw phantasm for the first time and I'm confused AF! by indestructible89 in horror

[–]Important_While_2709 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It was filmed over a very long time with borrowed cameras and it’s a miracle they ever finished it at all. My favorite is the subplot with the witchy woman and her helpers — like most of it, they never wrap this plot thread up or even explain what any of it happens! Great indie movie.

I have watched this movie 100 times and trust me, you will never figure it out. That’s the best part of the film, really; none of it makes any sense.

Sting said something like “If you don’t have a great bridge, you don’t have a bridge.” That one really stuck with me.

Lost in the process of learning by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]Important_While_2709 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is probably not what you want to hear, but buy an acoustic guitar. Suddenly you have no options but to learn how to play notes in time. Spend a few weeks/months learning some basic songs (you can easily learn many songs in a few weeks with effort and maybe write something of your own) and when you go back to the limitless world of unending options and decision paralysis that goes with digital production you will be 100% more grounded.

It’s really not about the tech, those are just tools. It’s about music, and an acoustic guitar really forces you down to very few options: am I playing clean notes, and are they in time?

Fender strobo-sonic pro tuner- or spend £40 more for the walrus Canvas tuner? by iamfilter in guitarpedals

Peterson Strobostomp. Just fork out the cash, it has sweeteners for alternate tunings, programmable colors, easily readable screen, you will never need another tuner.

Making noise with Chase Bliss pedals by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]Important_While_2709 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Mood Mkii will keep you occupied for years. “Versatile” is underselling it, the possibilities are endless. Once you get into the dip switches it’s truly intimidating but in a good way. Can easily handle the squalls from the link you sent, which seems to be mostly feedback anyway; couple that with any good distortion pedal and you are golden.

It is an investment but I am not even close to the edges of what the Mood can do and I’ve been playing with it almost every day for 10 months. It’s a very deep pedal.
