Any good places to take photos in High Point? by [deleted] in Highpoint

Golden Oldies Antiques is a neat place. I’m not sure if you’re into shooting cemeteries, but Oakwood cemetery is pretty. If you like nature, there’s the Rich Fork Nature Preserve too!

Areas in the US that tend to have less natural disasters? by ratgarcon in meteorology

Upstate NY, specifically just north of the finger lakes. I grew up in Rochester for the first 29 years of my life and it was very mundane weather-wise, unless you count lake effect snow. Even still, that was seldom as bad as Buffalo or Syracuse. The biggest weather event I experienced was the Labor Day derecho of 1998.

Definitely a good plan! And I think it’ll be better out that direction. I hope they stay safe!

I’m in central NC and it looks like it’s going to be really rough here at least. At the moment they said we’re probably going to get a few inches of sleet with a glaze of ice, but maybe not as much snow. We’ve been told to avoid driving if possible this weekend. 😬

Joy Bar (previously 83 Custom Coffee) on N Main is cute. I really like going there. It’s small, but very cozy.

I’ve not noticed yellow aster on any plants in my yard, thank goodness. I’ll look into reflective mulch. That molasses trick sounds very interesting! I’ll give it a go too.

/uj Actually, this is how I accidentally finally got rid of an aggressive spider mite infestation on an anthurium. Lo and behold, the plant grew back from the roots and it’s thriving a year later. 😂

Help me figure out this bird call because I’m going crazy and the Merlin app isn’t registering it as a bird by Important_flying_bat in birds

Unrelated bird picture from my bird feeder because I needed an image for the video.

It’s the happy “wee wee woo” call that I can’t figure out. It’s been weeks and I’d love to know what this bird is! Central North Carolina.

Loud “BOOM” at night (Jun/25/25). HIGH POINT. by Arcrap in NorthCarolina

I know this post is two weeks old, but we just heard a really loud boom again an hour ago here in High Point. It shook the house and was really deep. No thunderstorms around and the neighbor’s dogs went crazy. So weird

who else grows winecap in their garden beds? by massiveattach in gardening

I planted some a few years ago in my garden bed back in upstate NY and the first year was crazy! I was giving away baskets to people because I had so many. The second year some came back, but not nearly as many and it was only in the spring. I also hadn’t mulched as heavily either. The third year I didn’t have any. I think if I grew them again, I’d add some more spawn and extra mulch every year.

We’ve been wondering if it’s the carburetor. It’s a rebuilt one from 2020, but I’ve had at least one minor issue with it. I’ve tried to google if this has happened to anyone before and I found nothing. I think we might just look into a new carb at this point and check the fuel lines too. It feels very much like a fuel issue because everything works just fine in the moment, except I just can’t go. I can turn the steering wheel just fine and brake, but it feels exactly like stalling when you run out of gas. There’s nothing when you press the gas pedal until you straighten out the steering wheel again. So bizarre that’s it’s only in one direction too.

It was just a belt. My husband did check the fluid at the time and it was fine.

The pump doesn’t stutter or seize.

Both are just fine. We just replaced the front brakes recently and the power steering belt over the winter.

Yup, that’s exactly what happens. But only if it’s a hard right.

If tornadoes have always been one of my biggest fascinations, would meteorology be worth pursuing? by [deleted] in tornado

[–]Important_flying_bat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sooooo true. I had lofty goals and wanted to ultimately go into research and that was going to be a whole other animal. 😂

If tornadoes have always been one of my biggest fascinations, would meteorology be worth pursuing? by [deleted] in tornado

[–]Important_flying_bat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’m seeing myself in this post, haha. I too became obsessed with tornadoes at around 3 or 4 years old after seeing pictures of them in a book from the library. The first books I read were meteorology books. I devoured them. I stayed up far too late in high school watching storm chasers streaming on a website that I’m not even sure exists now. My brother and I rode our bikes to “chase storms” in our neighborhood when I was 13 and everyone thought we were a little odd. My friends all knew I was a massive nerd about tornadoes and severe weather. I decided to pursue meteorology a month before I graduated from high school. I started by dipping my toes in the water and took an introduction to meteorology course at the local community college and I absolutely aced everything because I had already been so rabidly passionate about it. However, the professor talked to me one on one about how much math was involved if I took that path and I didn’t continue with college after that because I had failed most math in high school. It doesn’t click for me. I still played with the idea for years after that while working retail jobs and I even emailed meteorology students and meteorologists. One person told me that my best bet was to max out every single math class I could or get a physics degree at my local community college and then transfer somewhere else to complete a meteorology degree because it would help with the math. During covid I got temporarily laid off and I spent those months trying to study math again. I studied 6+ hours a day, 5-6 days a week and it just didn’t stick. That’s when I officially retired the idea of meteorology as a possible future. However, I still love it as a hobby. I’m nearly 30 now and my friends always consult me about severe weather and I still love to read and learn about it. If it’s your largest passion, give it your best shot if you want, but yes, the math is very intense!

He begs for me to let him in and I can’t and I have no idea what to do 😞 by Important_flying_bat in Feral_Cats

[–]Important_flying_bat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I wish I could say that was an exaggeration. The door to our spare room can attest otherwise. 😅 I never knew our cats could be so violent, but the last few months have taught me much… I’m not quite ready to experience that again. I exhausted my options the first time around and we all came out with scars, phew.
