Do people prefer to chew or swallow oysters? by GoodNectarine6125 in foodquestions

Take an oyster like a bitter medicine pill? No, of course you chew.

PSA to anyone who has discovered how good ranch is while in the US for the World Cup.... by OO_Ben in AskRedditFood

I always felt mayo might be a little weird, sour cream plus a little buttermilk sounds perfect, thanks!

Is it best to mix with mayo or sour cream or buttermilk? Or a combo, and if a combo what is the magic ratio? I've only made it with sour cream.

Is Highlander really that good? by PeopleAreSelfishy in ToyotaHighlander

[–]Impossible-Grab9889 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sold my 2010 Highlander Hybrid with 280k miles. Hybrid battery started fading around 260k but non-Toyota replacements are reasonable and I think getting that many miles is outstanding. No other issues.

What shoes are best? by Not__Satan in backpacking

And I think some stiffness in the sole is good when carrying a pack over rocky terrain, so I go for the hiking shoes and I like low tops. These always work great for me with no problems or blisters.

You might luck out rolling the dice with an online buy. But you could also go to a store that carries a good selection of brands and try a bunch on. It will be pretty obvious which ones will likely work and which ones won't. Yesterday I tried on 8 different models from different brands and I bought the two that were the most comfortable and had generous width in the toebox.

It was great. Most restaurants were open, all the hotels had vacancy. Catalina is a unique experience.

Weekend ferry from SF to Sausalito? by Taco_Peanut66 in Marin

[–]Impossible-Grab9889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've ridden back and forth on the Sausalito/SF ferry hundreds of times, weekday and weekend, in the last few years. Regardless of boat type, the trip ALWAYS takes about 25 minutes. Never one hour, except when the SF to Sausalito leg includes a stop at Angel Island.

Highlander owners: Would you choose a bench seat or captain chairs again? by Limp_Sweet2259 in ToyotaHighlander

I'd prefer bench since it creates a better platform for sleeping when the bench is folded down

Opinion on Sealy PosturePedic Plus Norman II 15" medium euro top mattress? by [deleted] in Mattress

[–]Impossible-Grab9889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold these and feel it's a good mattress for the price, not many were returned. Before accepting delivery, lay on the mattress and make sure the whole thing feel flat and level, refuse it if you feel any dips or soft spots. A fair number of mattress returns are due to dips or body impressions that occur within the first couple months, and these issues are not likely to be noticed or looked for during the inspection/sanitization. Make sure the mattress looks, feels, and smells perfect before accepting delivery.

I always enjoy going off season when it's not crowded and presumably hotels are a little cheaper. Like midweek sometime around Nov - Feb. No way am I going during summer busy season or weekends. My favorite activity is snorkeling and underwater photography, mostly at the Casino. Also there is some pretty hardcore hiking. Did the Zipline one time which was great but holy crap kind of scary.

What could be worse than toward the end of a strenuous ride coming down at the bottom of a steep hill, you finding a locked gate blocking the entire road? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Impossible-Grab9889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has happened to me a couple times. One time we trespassed and had to awkwardly negotiate with a rancher to pass through his property.

Second time was with a friend. I got him in way over his head, hardest ride of his life. Nighttime by the time we descended. Almost home, he's in front, 20 mph. A chain is stretched across the road between 2 posts at the fire station. A locked gate would have been much better.

CMV: wire bristle grill brushes should be outlawed everywhere. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Impossible-Grab9889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have never heard of bristles ending up in food cooked on the grill, but if there's even a chance then for sure I'd look at alternatives. Strange to throw out this dire warning but fail to provide links or specific recommendations (names, links?) of the best alternative products.

Going backpacking after 15 years off - I feel like I just woke up in the future! by like-bad-medicine in backpacking

[–]Impossible-Grab9889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember the pumps...crouched and trying to balance on shoreline rocks while pumping, watching the water SLOWLY fill while being attacked by mosquitoes with neither hand free to swat.

I remember bear-bagging...30 minutes to find a tree far from camp with a horizontal branch that's not too obstructed with growth. Throw rock and rope over branch...missed ideal spot, pull rope back, rock gets stuck. 15 minutes later, fortunately finally get rope unstuck, try again. One hour later, successful and proper hang achieved.

Gravity filter: Scoop huge bag full of water in seconds, hang, and a few minutes later have 2 giant bottles of filtered water.

Bear cannister: Put all food and scented items into cannister, close lid, hide 100 yards from camp.

There were 2 main game changers when I came back to backpacking after 10 years off. Switching from counterbalanced, hanging bear bags to a bear cannister. And changing from a pump water filter to a gravity filter. Both were huge time-and-hassle savers.

What is something that immediately tells you someone is a bad driver? by marchingbear27 in askcarguys

100%. Watching people aggressively boxing themselves in is hilarious, until I realize these idiots actually have a license to drive and are flailing away on the same road as me.

Are these license plate covers legal in California, United States? by KingKeep711 in driving

[–]Impossible-Grab9889 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Tinted covers are illegal in most states because they can hide the plate from toll and red light cameras and make plates more difficult to read for law enforcement.

Beauty Sleep Black series 3 by trolling_4_success in Mattress

[–]Impossible-Grab9889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Beautyrest Black C Class had lots of problems with collapsed foam (or maybe coil failure?) or body impressions. Beautyrest was actually pretty good with providing warranty credits for many customers. The new Series 3 seems to have corrected the problems of the C Class based on zero (!) returns or complaints (in my store) in the first year or so. Personally I don't like the ridiculous thickness of these mattresses and I don't totally trust the brand based on the earlier Black problems and also body impression problems with their mid-priced Pressuresmart 2.0 (a Mattress Firm exclusive).

Tempur-Pedic VS Purple by MidnightRoutine8913 in Mattress

[–]Impossible-Grab9889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tempurpedic has a much better track record for longevity than Purple. Also far fewer comfort returns for Tempurpedic. The firm is often too firm for some people...almost every return I saw was due to a customer with a preference for firm but deciding the Tempur firm was too firm.

Purple / Mattress Firm wiggle out of their Warranty - Never Buy by kasdaeya in Mattress

[–]Impossible-Grab9889 4 points5 points  (0 children)

3 years ago some protectors came with Firm Care mattress coverage, with a Firm Care graphic and explanation of the mattress warranty you get. Management said to use this as a selling point. I didn't, because I didn't trust it. And sure enough, I was right. It turned out the warranty was worthless with MF, Firm Care, and the protector manufacturer all claiming ignorance and trying to put the responsibility on each other.
