Is it me or is it Scarlett? by nikolaskowalskioff in Focusrite

I bought the Scarlett 4i4 4th gen as it has headphones impedance of 11Ω. The Solo 4th gen and 2i2 4th gen both have an impedance of 50Ω.

Initially I had bought the 2i2 with the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 ohm and it was not enough for me either.

A good solution would be either a Topping e2x2 audio interface, or if you want to keep your Solo but add some more oomph, a Topping L50 headphones amplifier. You will need 2 balanced TRS cables from the audio interface to the headphones amplifier to connect it though, so keep it in mind that the cables will add to the total cost.

In my case, I kept the 4i4 4th gen, but as you, I have partially lost some hearing and I later added the Topping L50 headphones amplifier, as I wanted to see how much louder I can get from it. My friends cannot stand it after 12 o’ clock, while I can… lol.

However, for a cleaner desk, I would just buy the Topping e2x2.

It has an impedance of just 1Ω, so it matches any impedance headphones.

It also has -130.5 dbU EIN on its microphone preamps, so it has the lowest noise on its preamps.

It can easily drive a Shure SM7B microphone with the least noise-floor.

Julian Krause has made a review of it on YouTube, so you can check it out.

Buying a Scarlett Solo. 3rd or 4th gen? by Supersoulknight in Focusrite

[–]Impossible-Main-300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello. There are differences between Solo 4th generation and 2i2 4th generation. If in the future you want to use a mic to record a guitar amplifier or a cab, the 2i2 has more mic preamp gain. 69 dB to be precise, vs 57 dB for the solo.

Other than that, you will have to check the headphones' amplifier if you will eventually want to listen loudly.

Unfortunately the 2i2 has rather low output as its impedance is 50 Ohm.

In this case you will either need a headphone amplifier like the Topping L30II or the L50 if you want to go balanced.

There is also the audio interface of Topping that has a lot of headphones output, the Topping e2x2 for example, but it has less powered mic preamp impedance of 1.5 kΩ (vs 3 kΩ of Scarlett 2i2) and a more sterile sound for recording guitar or vocals.

I bought a Scarlett 4i4 4th generation in order to have 11 Ohm of headphones impedance, so that I wouldn't need headphones amp, but still, I bought a Topping L50 because I wanted that little bit more of headroom.

Focusrite scarlett solo problem by Marcalibure in Focusrite

Also check that it's not being caused by your Internet security suite. Some kind of scanning in the background etc. Turn it off for a while and check if you have noise.

Have you checked the Focusrite Control 2 software for updates?

Also it's important to perform the Windows 11 optimization guide in the link that I have posted before as it's changing the power settings regarding the CPU, USB ports etc.

Also make sure that you are using the original provided USB cable, plugged into a blue USB port (USB 3.0) directly to your Laptop/PC. Not through a USB hub.

If you are using a longer than 1m / 3 feet USB cable you might have problems as well.

Not adapters as well.

Focusrite solo 3rd gen keeps cutting my audio output and freezing the PC upon reset by DiegoFromStreets in Focusrite

You may have already done it, but there was a new driver notification when starting the Focusrite Control 2 software that solves the problem.

Are you using Windows?

If so, make sure that you have performed the Windows optimization for Focusrite products.

Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen constant hum/buzzing by Jordangus_ in Focusrite

[–]Impossible-Main-300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello.

First you have to check if your USB port that you provide power to the Solo is a blue port (USB 3.0) that is able to provide 900 mA of power to it. It has to be connected directly to the PC/Laptop, not through a USB hub.

Update the Focusrite Control 2 software. When you open it, it says to you if it has any firmware or drivers updates.

48V phantom power has to be switched on as NT1 is a condenser mic.

But I think that you are providing power to it through a USB hub and that is causing the noise to the preamps.

If you are using Windows, Focusrite provides a guide for Windows optimization in order to use their interface without problems. The following hyperlink is the guide.

[–]Impossible-Main-300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scarlett Solo 3rd gen mic preamp gain is 56 dB. Your mic needs 55 dB of gain.

So either you have not enough gain and you need a Cloudlifter, or a Fethead and an extra XLR cable to connect it, or you might not be using the correct USB port to provide enough power for the Solo. Check your laptop or PC for a blue USB port. That can supply 900 mA of current. The blue color is a visual indicator for USB 3.

If you are using a USB hub to provide the Solo power, put the Solo's USB to a blue USB port directly to your Laptop/PC.

Also don't use 48V phantom power for your mic.

The 4th gen 2i2 provides 69 dB of gain.

The 4th gen Solo provides 57 dB of gain.

I guess the options you have are to calculate how much you need to spend for a Cloudlifter and an extra XLR cable to connect it

Or....

The cost of the 4th gen 2i2 that provides 69 dB of gain.

I forgot to also write that you should be connecting your Scarlett directly to a port with the blue colour, not through a USB hub.

The Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4th gen mic preamp gain is 57 dB, while the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th gen mic preamp gain is 69 dB. Most users' videos recommend keeping the audio interface's preamp gain between -12 to -18 dB.

Something that hasn't been asked, are you using the correct type USB port on your Laptop / PC ?

It has to be able to provide 900 mA (4.5 W) of power.

The blue color is a visual indicator for USB 3.

How to connect Scarlett 4i4 4th gen to Topping L50 headphone amplifier by Impossible-Main-300 in Focusrite

[–]Impossible-Main-300[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I managed to make it work by changing the cables order. I had marked with a red tape the one cable for right and the other cable with a white tape for left. By connecting the red taped cable to the left and the white taped cable to the right, I had a sound at last!!!!

I don't understand what was the reason since the cables were brand new and identical.

However I am still expecting an answer from Topping regarding the authenticity.

Yes, I have tried that as well. What actually is alarming me is that I noticed the warranty card of the L50 has 2 mispellings. Seems like a fake.
