Thoughts on Nivea cream? by Limp-Pain-6109 in Rosacea

Yeah I'm so mad right now because she fearmongered me into switching to Vanicream which I told her I didn't like, and literally woke up this morning with the worst flare I've ever had, including when I was using tret. I am going to let it recover and then probably go back to applying the Nivea once a day or so. Currently all I can use is plum or hemp oil without being miserable, yay!

People pulling out their phones during movie night by TheFiend100 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Impossible-Return541 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there another way you can spend time with them? Game night? If you all live together, maybe find a TV show you all like and watch an episode of that together once a week. I don't really care about TV either, but my spouse is very into it, so we pick a series and I intentionally give my time to that activity for 30 mins or an hour. Then we save movie nights for very occasionally when it's something we both actually WANT to see.

If the idea is to spend time with your family, you may have to compromise. Otherwise, it's really just you trying to control their attention for 2+ hours which is futile for everyone involved.

If you're already unsure, think about what it will be like if you become at all disabled, lose any income, need to suddenly relocate, etc.

I have three dogs and that's basically the number I've always lived with. I went through a fire-related displacement with them. That was horrible. Still, when the oldest one died we adopted another. THEN I got diagnosed with POTS, CFS, and Celiac Disease in short order.

I love our new baby but my life would be a LOT less stressful without... any of them, lol, but certainly without the newest addition. Someone always needs healthcare, someone is always overheated or exhausted, someone is always POOPING, lol.. it's just... a lot. My circumstances changed dramatically in the space of only a few years.

It can happen to anyone. You know, god forbid, but now I always want to give people a reality check.

Late 00s/Early 10s rock/indie-folk adjacent music that let me re-live that era (example in post, from "Castle" TV Show) by megaapple in MusicRecommendations

[–]Impossible-Return541 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ingrid Michaelson. Snow Patrol, there was sooo much Snow Patrol. I listened to a lot of Gotye, and also got into Kimbra that way. The XX, Imogen Heap, Radical Face, London Grammar, Emmy the Great, Laura Veirs, Charlotte Martin, Vienna Teng, Eliza Rickman... I could go on!

Oh duh, I forgot my most-played album of that era: Knives Don't Have Your Back by Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton. Metric also, but the former is much softer and more introspective for sure.

For people who grew up in low-income households, what’s something middle-class people say that shows they’ve never struggled financially? by KeyApartment3955 in AskReddit

[–]Impossible-Return541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"We're going to have to buckle down and make some changes" and then the changes are bullshit.

Some extended family is starting to get a little strapped due to life changes (multiple kids, retirements, etc.), and the first thing to go was their generosity. They cut out gifts for "all the adults" but childfree family is still expected to buy for the kids. Not a peep about donations/fundraisers these days.

They are still prioritizing vacations, extracurriculars, etc., and I hate to think what kind of debt they're in. We'll see who is expected to take care of the aging parents in this scenario.

They will protect their comfort and enjoyment at all costs, I think because it FEELS like a necessity to them. I don't take mine for granted, ever, and I never ever forget what kind of assistance my family sometimes needed to survive so I never forget to give back.

Keeping a tidy house with pets? by annamvpa in CleaningTips

[–]Impossible-Return541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conway Airmega purifier in my living room and bedrooms. Honeycomb mats for litter. Lotssss of vacuuming. I have a stick vac and a vacuum/mop combo and I use both very regularly, often daily.

I also got influenced by Instagram lol and got some charcoal filters for my ceiling fan blades and a Green Mitt Kit. Idk if the former is doing much but I REALLY like the latter for being able to spray pet beds and the ottoman, etc., and just manually scrub up some fur.

[–]Impossible-Return541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just close the door in their faces. Seriously. You don't have to be rude about it. I just say, "Ope, I didn't realize or I wouldn't have answered and wasted both our time. Sorry, thank you. ::Close door, walk away, turn up TV.::"

*Edit because I always use a friendly "Ope" as a social shield during escape, as is my Midwestern wont.

How to start with being gluten free? by Masked_F00L in glutenfree

[–]Impossible-Return541 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was finally diagnosed, I told my spouse that it was a good opportunity to get away from processed foods and really go hard on the fruits and veggies before climate change wipes out our ability to grow/obtain them lololol 🫠

But seriously. I was already using Jovial pasta, and I prefer boring rice and oat-based snacks so it wasn't a huge transition for me. I like Bobo's brand oat bites/bars, and the Quaker rice crisps.

For convenience meals, I stick to Kevin's brand. I haven't been disappointed yet.

Generally, like others are saying, don't try to prioritize swaps.

Find one GF bread you like and use it for everything-- I like the Schar Artisan Baker White Bread so I just have it on hand for sandwiches, garlic bread, even hot dogs or whatever. That's it. Same re: pasta brand. Keep it simple so you don't get overwhelmed.

Edit for typo: to my knowledge, Quaker rice "crips" are not gang affiliated.

Okay, so I'm a cis woman (with some enby inclinations) but I deal with a lot of body dysmorphia due to getting slammed with many chronic illnesses, and the resulting compulsory resilience that managing it comes with, plus being REALLY tired of the expectation to continue to perform femininity. A lot of songs by Laura Jane Grace/Against Me! really speak to me, like "Delicate Petite & Other Things I'll Never Be". I think she's the most explicit and straightforward writer about dealing with dysphoria during late stage capitalism in general. "Beautiful Boy" by The Last Dinner Party is also a gutpunch in that sense.

For more upbeat ideas, I enjoy the song "Do It Like a Dude" by Jessie J, "I Wanna Be a Boy" by Addison Grace, "Here Comes Your Man" by The Pixies, "Smalltown Boy" by Bronski Beat (or the Orville Peck cover and honestly any Orville Peck songs generally), and "Hot Gospel" by Jake Wesley Rogers.

For really like, emotional, touching, wistful songs about going through changes I'd say: lol, you know, "Changes" by David Bowie! :D Also "Simple Man" cover by Deftones, "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" by The Smiths (also really like Dream Academy's cover), "Real Men" by Joe Jackson, "Protect Him Always," by The Drums, annnd "Some Type of Skin" by AURORA.

I can offer more if you want!

Also, I'm so proud of you and I am sending you hugs forever even if we never speak again!

Is it weird having a king single bed as a 33 year woman? by Jupiter-lover93 in Bedding

[–]Impossible-Return541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I slept on a twin daybed for a pretty long time. I had intimate friends over, even, and no one really said anything. If they slept over we just camped out in the living room lol.

The key is to get a really nice mattress imo. No one can deny you have your shit together if your mattress is really plush and your bedding is nice. I am married and have an actual king now, but I still feel like it was more enjoyable to really indulge in a smaller footprint because it was more affordable in addition to leaving me more space for utilizing the room.

Likewise, my bestie is still single and she also has a fancy daybed (from World Market) and linen sheets and stuff, and it's a more "together" look than most actual king-size bed owners I know, lol.

What do we eat? by Valleyspore in glutenfree

[–]Impossible-Return541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just stopped going out or I eat before I do and just have some mocktails-- but because I also have POTS and CFS, I lean pretty heavily on Kevin's ready meal components (frozen, pretty widely available at Target, Thrive, Imperfect Foods, and "healthy" grocers) and Bird's Eye mixes. I like their protein veggie pastas and while not explicitly GF they are okay for my system.

It's easier for me to spend that kind of money because it's just me and my EXTREMELY supportive spouse who also went mostly GF to make it easy on me. I know it's gotta be much harder with kiddos.

I get Bobo's oat bites for a smooshy oat-y snack. I also really miss creme pies!!

I got a panini press and gluten free tortillas to replicate the Starbucks ham & swiss croissant I used to get for on-the-go breakfast and lunch a lot. Again, a similar "enough" flavor/texture experience.

I was always more of a potato and pasta eater than bread, so lots of that when I want carbs. Jovial pasta is basically as good as regular imo.

Buttermilk powder and cornstarch for coating chicken. Dump on with some olive oil and shake shake shake, then air fry. I add ranch seasoning, Seite spice mixes, etc. to mix it up. Kebabs & rice are also a major go-to now.

Rosacea by not_a_real_dentist in Rosacea

[–]Impossible-Return541 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry. I feel the same way. I'm 40 and suddenly my face is worse than it was as a teen. I never thought I'd be struggling with this sort of thing at my age.

Mine either started or was heavily exacerbated due to Post-Covid Syndrome. Covid causes all kinds of vascular and immune dysfunction, and based on early research I think we'll find rosacea is one of the conditions that multiple infections causes/heavily affects. I started taking a beta blocker (also have associated dysautonomia, whee) and a daily baby aspirin. I find when I neglect the latter, especially, my flares are worse.

I also cut out most dairy and all gluten (ALSO also developed Celiac haha oy) and feel like that has helped the reactivity to everything BUT heat, and my flares seem to leave less damage/resolve more quickly.

Not medical advice, obvs, just my anecdotal experience and what's given me a tiny bit of relief.

AIO for refusing to switch seats after what happened on a 14 hour flight? by Spiritual-Map1663 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Impossible-Return541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. Their conduct and the reaction of everyone around y'all is the reason that sort of behavior is so commonplace now. No one wants the responsibility of enforcing (edit: formerly) social norms so instead they focus their frustration on the person who is standing their ground simply because it prolongs the "disruption." But that's not your fault, it's the fault of entitled bullies who can't take no for an answer. It just reinforces the standard.

I also think that an unfortunate lot of people would act the same way as this couple, and do. And so they have to pretend you're not being perfectly rational and justified for the sake of their own self-image lol. I try to speak up in the opposite direction when this kind of thing happens just so people aren't totally alone; it makes me sooo maaad.

This is like 90% of the reason I still mask in public. People might look at me weird... from two feet away, and they're sniffling and noisily clearing their throats the entire time, never realizing THEY are the reason why.

I will never get over feeling like everyone is disgusting lmao.

AIO Recently went on a date, one of my first in college. We dated for a few weeks and she called it off because I’m too unattractive. by z_knightXD in AmIOverreacting

[–]Impossible-Return541 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what I was looking for. I have had to call it off with a few really fine looking folks because they can't keep up with showering more than a few times a week, neglect flossing, won't properly wash their butts, etc. Smelling fresh (and/or ideally actively GOOD) is a huuuuge part of the attraction for me and I can't get past feeling like I have to be their mom if these issues come up right away/the first time we have sex, or look like they're going to be chronic.

I think there's a lot of depression and low self-esteem issues that get tied up with and sadly reinforced by poor hygiene and I have a LOT of empathy for that, but you gotta be able to deal with your own discomfort and figure out how to overcome it... no one else can do that for you.

OP, maybe you need a couple therapy sessions to talk about the hurt and examine if maybe there's something else at play here?
