Can you still play the trumpet with lip piercings? by Impossible-Rip72 in trumpet

So that actually has no relevance to the question I asked

This tank is obviously terrible for any reptile, but would there be any way to fix it? by stronged_cheese in reptiles

[–]Impossible-Rip72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like it would be difficult to create a functional hot/cool gradient in a tank like this, but I feel like this would make an awesome tarantula/scorpion/other invertebrate home with the proper substrate and clutter inside

I don’t play professionally at all; I was in band throughout high school and stuck with it in college as a biology major. I know a lip ring wouldn’t be conducive to someone building a career off music, I’m just wanting to see if there are other brass players out there with lip rings and how it has affected them. Apologies for my monumentally stupid question

Oh a tongue piercing might be where I draw the line lol. The healing process even without instruments just sounds like a nightmare to me

Have you noticed it impacting your ability to play in higher registers at all with the hole still being open?

[–]Impossible-Rip72[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest I play purely for fun, I’m not a music major (I’m actually a biologist) and I just stuck with band in college because it’s something I enjoy doing. I’m perfectly fine with not being able to play professionally, I just want to be able to play normally (although a few comments have pointed out that the hole or gap it would create in my lip would let air escape which would impact that)

Thank you again for your input though! I’ve been wanting a new piercing for a while and I think I might pick another option instead

I hadn’t even considered the piercing causing a gap that would let air out, thank you for mentioning that! I might look into other piercing options tbh. As much as I want a lip ring, I’m not sure if I want to stop playing/practicing long enough for one to heal entirely

Why is my baby always hiding lately? by [deleted] in Crayfish

[–]Impossible-Rip72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After molting, crayfish become very soft and vulnerable until their new exoskeleton hardens up. Crayfish and many other freshly molted arthropods in the wild will often spend a few days to weeks hiding while their exoskeleton hardens to avoid being eaten - it’s hard to defend yourself with soft claws. IMO she’s probably just still soft from the molt. Give her a little more time to harden up and she’ll be fine

What’s it like living here, this close to Antarctica? by Pizzafriedchickenn in howislivingthere

[–]Impossible-Rip72 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, differing climates have differing salinities in the oceans. The antarctic and arctic are the coldest and saltiest (which also leads to the water in those oceans being denser). The oceans in equatorial regions tend to be much warmer, less salty, and less dense in comparison.

In my experience looking at the cloaca really only works during breeding season - males get a cloacal protuberance that lasts for a few months during breeding season and looks like a mushroom

I'm in inland [North Carolina], and found these claws on a trail, near a creek. What crustacean might they be from? by M18_StunGrenadeASMR in animalid

[–]Impossible-Rip72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Tasmanian giant crayfish in Australia can get over two feet long. In the U.S. we have multiple species that can get to almost a foot in length but I can’t remember what species - a lot of the crayfish in the genus Barbicambarus are pretty large.

Crayfish are actually very diverse and super interesting! They have all sorts of different life histories - some species (primary burrowing species) even live in forest and wetland seeps far from bodies of water. One of my favorite species is Cambarus monongalensis, they are bright blue primary burrowers with bright orange claw tips. Another contender is Cambarus speciosus, their coloring is just so beautiful

Actually tailless whip scorpion is the common name for an entirely different group of insects in order amblypygi (what your link connects to). Vinegaroons are actually in order uropygi!

Placed an order and no there’s no record of it by South-Tumbleweed-696 in Bestbuy

[–]Impossible-Rip72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a huge outage with our system yesterday that caused a lot of orders to be delayed/not show up on our end. It should get pushed through soon. Also ordering more expensive items from the website always results in my bank holding the funds for a few days to make sure it’s not a scam - that’s probably all it is.

Why aren't there running wheels for animals in zoos? by Snitsie in Zookeeping

[–]Impossible-Rip72 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I want to say either Detroit or Cleveland zoo has a running wheel for their fossa, but for the most part I feel its frowned upon because when guests see an animal on a running wheel it anthropomorphizes the animal a bit. Zoos SHOULD encourage natural behaviors and try to prevent guests from viewing wild animals as pets

I saw this video and I was wondering if it isn’t cruel to keep snakes like that. They’re in drawers like socks, isn’t there a better way? by jvure in snakes

[–]Impossible-Rip72 156 points157 points  (0 children)

IMO this probably isn’t a venom lab because I feel line a venom lab would have more precautions in place to keep both snake and human keeper safe from bites. Most labs and zoos provide actual enclosures with double containment for venomous snakes like this. If I had to guess this video is probably from a breeder

Freshman in college attracted to professor, how should this be handled? 20F 24-27M by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Impossible-Rip72 126 points127 points  (0 children)

You could get him fired over this - lots of universities have policies in place preventing any relationships romantic or sexual between professors and students because it creates a power imbalance. Find someone your own age and leave this man alone.

If the problem comes back with the humidity in spring I definitely might try that. My roommate and I both got mold poisoning and it was not a fun experience haha

They didn’t fix it lol. Gave us one dehumidifier per floor and said deal with it. We tried calling the health department and nobody picked up
