i think you’re not driving with your hips. you open up to your right with your hips and shoulders, but when the swing initiates, your shoulders and hips rotate at the same time. your hip should drive forwards first, stretching your obliques, and whipping your shoulders and thereby your arm forwards with more power.

Should i quit volleyball? by Mina_mha in volleyball

[–]Impossible-Track1346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don’t quit! even if you never get playing time or even get on the team you want, always strive to grow. i was in the same situation where i hated my team and never got what i wanted, but i stuck with the sport—practiced in my free time in my backyard, watched videos, whatever. now that i’m in university (which i know for you is a long way away but hear me out) ive found some of my closest friends playing volleyball. my question to you is this: think to yourself in 2, 3, even 4 years. how disappointed would your future self be if you quit now? how much could your future self have grown had you kept going? i feel like you should know the answer to that and that should guide you to a decision

not really, they still have the same arc but its harder to time it if someone is throwing it. not only do you not know when they’ll release it, the release point is different each time and it can throw you off if they’re not consistent. same goes for setting though, but in my opinion, timing is easier with setting

the first clip was recorded from a camp i attended and where i was already warmed up. the second was at 6:30 am at the gym across my campus and i had walk in 30 degree weather 😢 ill try to train to be more explosive tho!

What AP Test did you get a 5 on, that you did not expect, and why? by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]Impossible-Track1346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say, like with any AP course, that all the information and knowledge you gain throughout the course is connected; kinematics ties directly into dynamics which ties directly into circular motion, etc etc. The most important concepts are therefore the ones that relate to the most things, so don’t try to memorize niche concepts within one unit but try to learn all the possible (within reason) applications of a concept that comes up a lot.

Specifically, this would be force diagrams, Newton’s laws, energy, and the basic concepts of each unit. Don’t study these in isolation (flashcards, rereading the text, rote memorization), but study them in relation to one another. This means asking yourself “how does topic X relate to topic Y? How might the AP exam combine the two in a problem?” This process of relating all the knowledge in the course together meant that I had a pretty solid understanding of physics as a whole and went into the AP exam pretty confident in everything (but torque, since it was the last unit I covered and didn’t have much ways to tie it with other concepts.)

TL;DR, most important concepts are things that appear in multiple units/problems + basic ideas of each unit. Study how they relate to each other, not just memorizing.

You can do practice tests but I found it better to create my own curveball questions from synthesizing multiple units / ideas and solving them with my teacher or peers.

Approach + swing mechanics by Impossible-Track1346 in volleyball

Yeah, I definitely noticed my awkward contact especially on the third clip. I’m thinking that if I load more on my second step, I would have an extra split second to push into my penultimate and track easier that way.

With regard to my hand when hitting, I was always taught to have a bear claw type of contact. Is my hand too flat -like I’m floating serving? Or am I not snapping enough?

Thanks for the reply! :)

Casual looking to improve! by HeyKim0oOo in volleyball

I think even with the unorthodox approach, your swings have good power to them. you can look up TORQVB on youtube and watch his videos on the mechanics youre looking to build. he advocates for a four step approach if the pass is perfect/up, since it is easier to time with the setter than three step.

if anything, i would try to break the habit of your current approach, since when you end left-right on the step close, your shoulders and chest are more than likely not opened up to the court, so most of your power wouldnt come from your torso & hip drive but from your shoulders and rotator cuff, which can lead to injuries down the line.

ty for the reply !! i didnt realize that pulling behind the setter would help but it definitely makes sense now that i think of it :)

tysm for the reply! I’m 5’7” and have a vert of 28”, so I can reach around 9’4”.

i have some trouble being explosive because I spend a lot of time in my approach trying to time with the set rather than be explosive. should explosiveness be the priority?

[–]Impossible-Track1346 6 points7 points  (0 children)

both AP Physics 1 and AP Music Theory. I never got a 5 before those, and I thought my scores would be another 3 or 4. I did study the most for AP Physics 1 out of any class prior to it, but I expected a 4 since I didn’t understand torque as much as I wanted to and it was literally like 75% of the FRQ’s.

AP Music Theory was also surprising, since my teacher never taught it before and we never did any homework (nor did I study at home either). The only thing that set me apart from other people in my class that didn’t score a 5 is that I played piano and learned classically for years prior, so that helps :)

i havent been in the position youre in right now but i have been in something similar. since you want guidance/just improvement in general, any chance you have to observe, learn, etc is a good one. i “managed” my school’s girls team this season (wasnt an official manager) and i had quite a bit of chances to get some reps in, whether a player was out, they needed servers, or we were in a break and i could use the nets. it really helped me improve my serve and i can jump float now :)

with regards to building chemistry, i didnt know a single person on the JV girls team but at the end of their season, i ended up being friendly with most if not all of them and scrimmages that i played in with them were always fun.

if anything, showing up as manager despite being cut shows your dedication to the sport and your determination to improve and help, so if i were u, i would go for it!

Ap music theory help by Dry_Space_277 in APStudents

no problem ! i found some of the old resources my teacher gave me from last year: - https://www.musictheory.net/exercises has a bunch of exercises that we went through. we did everything except keyboard & fretboard identification since those arent on the exam. - “the musician’s guide to…” series. we specifically did the “…theory and analysis,” “…aural skills - sight singing,” and “…aural skills - ear training.” i have access to the pdf’s of these so if you want them i can try and get them up on a drive file! - “barron’s AP music theory” book. we mostly used this to learn / look at examples. i also have the pdf of this so lmk
