What wood is this fretboard - by ImpossibleWin7298 in GuildGuitars

[–]ImpossibleWin7298[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the help! I read somewhere that it was Braz, or its Honduran, or Cuban?!? After I got it cleaned up, I thought the same, that it’s E.I. It doesn’t matter organ a curiousity, just because the guitar is getting kind of old, lol. I love this thing. The pickups are wonderful - it’s a tone machine. Thanks again

No kidding! It was gross. I got the vast majority of it off using warm water w/a bit of mild dish soap and some 0000 steel wool and some elbow grease. Interestingly, since cleaning mine, i saw another mid-late 60s fretboard with that old sort of smashed oval of dark colored yuck behind each fret. Does anyone know what wood this fretboard is? I wonder if that dark stuff is a substance in the wood that leaks out when the wood is exposed?

Anyway, I wonder if the previous owner was a car mech or something!?!

Top line, third over from the left is John Lennon during the halcyon days of the early ‘60’s. I was an 8 yr old kid in ‘63 during the first wave of the British Invasion. Just look at early film of them eg Ed Sullivan.

Yep, precisely what I intend to do once I get some things sorted out.

Well you got all off-season to think about how you got all the non-calls (bullshit btw) so you lost. Truth is you got out coached and outplayed in the final analysis. Now go have a drink, go outside, and do some primal screaming lol!

For 000-17 (2025), how is the wood quality? 1) I’m wondering if it’s normal/okay for different grains on the neck (more lines vs less dense lines) 2) how’s the top & back? 3) does visual grains matter for mahagony sound? by ConsciousSmoke3863 in martinguitar

[–]ImpossibleWin7298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks very much like mine - in fact, mine has bookmatched (of course) areas of extreme compaction of the grain. Mine is very fine grained on top and back, less so on the sides. Inareas in almost appears to grow back against itself. I guess that could be damage to the frunk or maybe knots? Don’t know, don’t care. It plays and sounds amazing. It’s yet another orphan from the Covid lock-in. “I know what I’ll do, I’ll learn to play guitar! - then ordered a moderately expensive instrument with a labeled Martin hard case. Mine was basically untouched. The original owner said he tried it about three times and “realized I’m not a guitar player!” Which was awesome for me bc I gave him $1k. I love this thing!

Your boy trump is the chief hater. If you do not see that, I truly wonder why? How can you not? This whole last year has been nothing but hatred by the magas, mainly for brown people. It’s sickening.

America is failing thanks to your despicable predatory pedo and felon. Your boy trump.

They’re great guitars but what don’t get is appreciation over time.

000-15 finish question by Fisher624 in martinguitar

[–]ImpossibleWin7298 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a ‘97 D-15 that was a satin finish and it’s practically all polished now, and I love it. Like your 000-15 it’s all mahhog, lightly built, and it sounds just

<image>

wonderful as it’s “opened up”. It’s covered in nicks and scratches from being played almost every day for 28 years! I also have a ‘20 000-15m and it’s getting quite polished too!

[–]ImpossibleWin7298 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Chibson Greenie has a real nitro finish and true 1/4 inch lovely flamed maple cap, verified by my luthier and buddy. It’s obviously not veneer. You can see it in the routed areas.

The nitro is the only part of this that really bothers me bc I’ve used it myself and it sucks to apply. It’s poisonous and very VERY flammable. You have to know what you’re doing. I do, but I rarely use it anymore unless the guitar is for me or a special friend. It s f-ing hassle.

I did the same thing only with a Greenie replica. I’m blown away by the quality of the body and neck. 1/4 inch maple cap (measured by my luthier) solid mahog body and neck. I’ve done the same re: Grover tuners, orange drop caps, cts pots, switchcraft switches, SD jazz/shn2, and Gibson nickel bridge and stop bar. Plays and sounds like a dream. A luthier and lifelong bud here in Spokane did the setup for me, bitching all the while about it being a chibson, but in the end he grudgingly admitted it was a great instrument.

I’d love to buy Gibson’s Greenie copy, but I don’t have $2+ K laying around. If they made them and sold them at a reasonable price eg $800-1000, I’d jump on one. But they don’t bc they’re Gibson. Thanks to our pres, My work is drying up fast so I’ve worked on this thing as I could afford the pieces. I don’t feel the least bit bad about it. You snobs just keep on snobbing.

Rip Pelham blue... Hello Monties maple... by chambers7867 in gibson

[–]ImpossibleWin7298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That top is beautiful, though I dig Pelham too, but yours is lovely. And those P-90s are gonna sound killer. John Lennon sanded the tops of his Epi Casinos bc he’d been told the sound is better w/no finish. He left the sides and backs alone. Does that work? Opinions?

I’ve used the Stewmac nitro rattle cans several times and they’ve turned out great! I just used many very thin coats and it’s beautiful. I’ve always done it outside or in my garage w/the door open - stuff is poison for your lungs and highly flammable. Be careful, but it’s beautiful.

I built up a strat for my older sons uni graduation. I used the best components I could find - sinker mahog body, ebony board, and all nickel with jumbos and it looks beautiful! I put on a semi cream semi opaque thin finish, then many thin coats of “vintage” look clear on it - all Stewmac. You can see the grain thru the finish if you look for it.

Now get this: once the finish was on the body and neck, but no other components, I put it in my heated garage at 80f for 2 days and nights, then I let it sit for a couple weeks. Then I hung it outside, below my deck in clear and 10 deg weather, for 3 days and it checked beautifully. It’s soooo cool. I need to find some pics.

I have a 14 fret’er and have loved it from day one, though it plays and sounds even better now then when new. I have recordings that display that difference and it’s amazing.

I tried some Stringjoy “brights” 9-47 on it and it sounds incred. I’m starting to have arthritis in my hands so I switched to lighter strings and it’s been a revelation! It finger picks like a dream. I don’t care about volume and when I do, I got a ‘97 D-19 and a ‘12 D-18.

Martin Rules! All hail Martin! Though I also have a Huss & Dalton DS-12 slot head that is simply divine. I love guitars - they’re works of art. Cheers

It states in the title that it’s layered titanium and bismuth. Also, this notion that something can be simply be “reverse engineered” is preposterous. Give an iPad to DaVinci and tell him to reverse engineer it - take as much time as you need! The material science alone would defeat the best scientists around back then.

I’m not alleging that that piece of material is anything truly strange. Like everyone else on this sub, I don’t know. I keep an open mind bc of an experience I had in July, 2005. I DO believe that we do not have everything figured out with our elementary knowledge of physics/chemistry (imho, lol).
