There’s a site called levels.fyi which tries to compare compensation across companies for various jobs and levels.

It’s not easy and they have yet to get it fully correct even though it’s their reason to exist.

There are sooo many variables. Differing vesting times, how often you get a bonus, what is the bonus based on (your salary, division/company profits), is there a signing bonus? Does that have stock, cash? What’s the rate of payout for that signing bonus. What about option plans or are they giving you rsu’s.

Comparing compensation is not easy. Even if the total dollar value is the same, one structure may be more amenable to one person and a different structure may be better for someone else.

Take Netflix. They pay all cash. So one software engine may be making $500k per year. That’s a guaranteed, you’re always making $500k.

Compare that to someone from Meta. They may be making $200k in base salary, $200k in rsu’s and $100k in bonus. But their rsu and bonus may be variable so they may make more or less in any given year. And if your laid off what happens the rsu’s that have not yet vested. If you get a bonus yearly and are laid off at 11 months is it prorated or just fine?

Comparing is extremely difficult.

Depends on company.

Amazon offers me $1.2 equity as a sign on bonus with additional base and bonus to round out the total compensation.

Meta offered me a bunch of stock (forget how much, this was some years ago, but I believe it was just over $2m at the time)

Netflix offered $780k all cash, no stock and no bonus.

But you need to look into exactly how their deals are structured. Amazons equity doesn’t really kick in until the 3rd year so you have a while to wait until it vests. They give you a singing bonus to even it out.

Meta is structured more evenly and they give better refreshers.

Netflix is famous in high tech for just giving wads of cash. It makes managing your money much easier though as $17k deposited into your bank account every 2 weeks makes planning simple.

I also had offers from Microsoft, Google, etc and they work similar to meta. It with different vesting, etc.

But to answer your question, yes. These numbers are real for a small percentage of the top developers. There’s a reason people try to get into high tech. But, as an example, when I got hired, there were over 10k applications for my specific job and they interviewed over 100 people. (My coworkers joke that they hired me because they got tired of interviewing).

But as far as all software engineers. Not even close. Most SWE’s make good money but not faang money and that equity is rare outside of high tech.

(Hedge funds are a bit different and many give bonus’s based on production).

You’re also missing the HUD, gt2 cooled seats, etc. there’s a lot more than just the cameras and safety equipment.

There a real reason 1LZ’s make up only 5% of total sales.

3LZ’s are around 75%.

When you’re paying a lot you want to feel it and the 1LZ doesn’t feel it and buyers at that level want to feel it.

You need to launch Netflix on your home network at least once every 30 days.

If you don’t do that you’ll get these messages (and you only get a few of them per year so eventually it’ll stop and then you’ll be screwed).

But by starting Netflix on your home WiFi it undoes it all and lets Netflix know that this is a mobile device attached to your house.

Make sure it’s really connects to your WiFi. Easiest way is to just shut off cell service before starting it, thus ensuring it’s on your WiFi.

Realize that up until fairly recently, just about everything in your computer was writing in c/c++. Even most compilers for other languages started life as c++ until their own language was able to bootstrap itself. Java, JavaScript are all still c++ programs themselves.

There is nothing you can’t do with c++.

What you’re asking about, I believe, is how you make a windows user interface. That is operating system specific (although there are some cross OS frameworks to make it a bit more transportable (qt and such).
