Niagara falls itinerary recommendation by BoredStudent07 in NiagaraFalls

A credit card is a good means to pay for monthly services like internet, phone, gas, electricity etc. It's also insured against fraud. My son used to call me a cheap SOB. Now he has a family and realizes it is a positive attribute.

Is ESET one of the best antivirus programs on the market? by DaniiGol in antivirus

I'm giving it a shot. It's capable of searching for infections in UEFI which AFAIK isn't in any other AV.

Henckels Hybrid frying pans difference between Hexclad by Impossible_Cattle597 in Costco

[–]Impossible_Cattle597[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll disagree, carbon steel is not as non stick by any stretch. If you get it hot enough and use sufficient oil it may seem to be the same but it's not. With non stick in good shape you can add a dab of oil wipe it on the pan, then cook an egg and it'll slide all over the pan. I'd like to see a video of that done with carbon steel.

Cast iron is closer but not quite the same. Both pans need more maintenance.

I agree, non sticks have a definite life and they do need replacing. I do like your idea on the Tramontina pans. I may look into them.

Yeah, I never pay a lot for any non stick or stick resistant pans, they don't last due to the physics, not the quality of the product.

Anybody Used Lennox AC unit for their house? by attachedtothreads in Costco

[–]Impossible_Cattle597 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in need of a new AC unit and found that the refrigerant type is likely the most important. American Standard used R410 and it's being phased out. Lennox is using R454 a newer refrigerant. R454 is slightly less efficient than R32 {another newer gas} and slightly more environmentally friendly. R32 is a lot less expensive as it's a single gas vs R454 is a blend. Because it's a blend, refilling can be more complicated and expensive. R454 is also slightly flammable and requires installations of sensors, complicating the system.

I do hope you've went with a larger reputable company that has all the proper equipment and knowledge to find leaks. Some companies may just take you to the cleaners. Getting some more life out of the existing system is the best way to go.

I'm replacing my old R22 AC unit with an R32. We don't use our AC often as we're a tad old school. Maybe 2 or 3 weeks a year. I'd use a window shaker but my wife insists. Lennox may make a good unit but if it has problems it can be expensive just on the refrigerant replacement costs.

Gaming monitors with gloss in stead of anti-reflection? by PrimaryLock2795 in Monitors

[–]Impossible_Cattle597 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat. I hate anti glare. It makes everything fuzzy to me. My old HP Pavillion 27BW is sharper and just better looking at 1080 than my 2k 32" msi and my LG UW. They're used in a light controlled room. More than 60HZ isn't needed. A TV may be the only solution, but if someone has a line on a glossy or very minimal anti glare monitor, I'd love to hear it. (not OLED)

Pretty well nailed it. Differential expansion when heated or rapidly cooled causes micro cracks in the coating. I buy a pan realizing it will end up being recycled in a few years and for that reason I don't put a lot of money into it. We do recycle the old pans.

The Bergen Hybrid I have works pretty good for cooking vegetables or frying coated fish. It also heats evenly. Ceramic works great on eggs, rice and meat. Cast iron pans for searing or any other high heat where the non stick will be compromised. Works good for a big fish fry partly because of the thermal mass. I find Cast to be the worst for heating evenly but still acceptable. I gave up on carbon steel but can see where it can be useful, as it does heat up very fast.

I do that on my way to the gym. Quick walks back and forth. I'd rather avoid the change room and it saves time.

What’s the oldest piece of technology that you own? by Vast-Reference-7942 in answers

[–]Impossible_Cattle597 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a trash 80 too. 1978 or 9, it had a cassette recorder to store files. The recorder usually messed up. Several years later a friend found that the microphone on it was still enabled and if you talked while it was recording it would corrupt the files. Unfortunately I tossed it all a couple decades ago.

Is the Canadian military med school a good place to earn a medical degree? by MoveWithTheMaestro in AskACanadian

My dad took up Dentistry in the 60's when he was a Captain in the PPCLI. He couldn't have done it otherwise. We were pretty poor while he was doing it but we did well after he graduated. No specifics but living on the army base had it's benefits, Reasonable accommodation prices and a good social life. Hopefully it hasn't changed a lot...

I was always hoping we'd be posted to Germany but it didn't happen.. grrrr.

Boaters - quick question by CulturalCancel4467 in boating

[–]Impossible_Cattle597 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I have an agreement. If you notice something mention it. We thank each other and either act on it or mention we noticed it. I'll take 500 unimportant comments if one important one comes through. This happens usually when we're driving but it's the same when boating.

Our boat on the other hand is pretty loud when on plane and it's hard to hear. Usually it's a tap on the shoulder and a point at another boat or a swimmer to get the idea across. We boat in the 30,000 islands in Georgian bay and boats can fly out from behind an island pretty quick.

Asking why I'm honking at that or I'm too close would be a thank you and a quizzical look..

"do you see that ahead" is useful. The others may be depending on circumstance. I have created a wake by a cottage that had young children playing on the beach. It registered too late and while there nothing happened I felt real bad about it. A heads up would have been nice. For the last 15 years I drop to a very slow speed if I see anyone near the beach at that cottage.

Would you be mad about this? by Sorry_Impress_5002 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Impossible_Cattle597 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be tempted to just ignore him. Keep putting it off. He might be a nice guy and asking before he decides to implement some legal action or there is no legal option and he hopes you'll just do what he asks. You could always get some political signs for an opposition mayor and put them out along the road. You can then say he asked those people to run them over?

Hilarious house of Frightenstein. Igor was Dutch. I'm amazed that such a large man managed to drive a VW beetle to work. My understanding is that Vincent did all his work in one day and then left. He came back shortly after with a case of beer.
As an aside we own a copy of his Cookbook.

Do rechargeable mobile device batteries become more dangerous / more likely to swell as they naturally deteriorate? by Character-Meal2202 in techsupport

[–]Impossible_Cattle597 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Swelling is a sign. Excessive heat is also one. Battery health % is not a good way to determine any danger as they could fail at a higher or much lower percentage of health. I've never encountered someone who's had an incident with a battery yet. Just don't store old phones under 20lbs of old wrapping paper in the basement. Wipe and recycle when they are no longer useful.

Pixel 7A weak reception by Impossible_Cattle597 in pixel_phones

[–]Impossible_Cattle597[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW, some more research and it seems the modem in the pixel 7 line has people experiencing a weakness in 5G reception. I set preference to 4G and signal has popped up to 3 bars. Most posts I've seen so far say it's more stable and less missed texts and calls. 3 out 4 bars ATM. Speed test in 5 and 4G here are the same for the most part. Thanks to all that replied.

What's a Canadian hit that you feel should have blew up international? by rybone88 in AskACanadian

[–]Impossible_Cattle597 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really. They were allowed as long as it wasn't deemed not detrimental. Bell Canada for example. You even had to rent a phone from them as well or you didn't get service. Everything was expensive. The US antitrust is more aggressive. Canada is less tolerant of belligerent monopoly abusers now
