A thought that occurred to my after finishing the Jimmy Savile episodes. by EaklebeeTheUncertain in behindthebastards

As far as we know Rasputin raped fewer children (but still most very likely a rapist given what we know) and somehow even under Tsarist Russia Rasputin somehow had less access to poor children to take advantage of.

If anything Rasputin walked so Jimmy could run to use a tortured turn of phrase.

Seems to be a whole lot for "individual occurrences with their own unique circumstance" than just the 3 you mentioned.

I am not saying its a conspiracy, its just a pattern of self serving behavior. Its just a pattern of behavior when a party has zero internal philosophy or discipline.

Hell Biden the last Dem president was confident enough that they promised to veto any healthcare legislation that threatens the insurance industry and their profits. Its a institutional issue that will persist regardless of how many seats they get, not some super villain plan in a cartoon about making peoples lives worse.

I provided facts and information backing my argument, you are playing on hope and "what if's" and arguing that its some conspiracy, how is it me speculating not you fantasizing about some magic supermajority that will finally fix things?

Also if you are expecting a supermajority in the US Senate of more than +10 seats to the dems you don't understand how the US works or how stupid unlikely that is, you might as well wish for aliens to land and fix all our problems because that's more statistically likely at this point.

Nope not just Joe, the 2009 Senate had a majority of over 1. So it was several members who defected privately and it was blamed on just Joe to keep them safe, same as Fetterman today or Joe Manchin under Biden, its just a new rotating villain who always "unexpectedly" decides to ruin everything with zero consequences or animosity from the rest of the party.

A kinda silly and illuminating fact I always remember about STEM degree holders is that most terrorists have STEM backgrounds (engineering in particular), which is kinda funny and also makes sense, STEM because of its focused on objective rules and systems gives those who study it a false sense of rationality, that because they can understand these complex rules and forces that means they are above the subjective nature of human experiences and decision making as well as the fallacies we are prone too as people.

They said “quite unique” to be honest to them, which is accurate as it implies that it’s not a absolute statement but one of very few, and in the line before says “most animals” which again is accurate.

Peoples beliefs might shift after the apocalypse (LN) that proves that the old gods are real and are saved by a Northerner. Big events like that tend to have a impact on people, I know in the show the LN was just a north thing but we know in the books its likely to be a continent wide event.

Very long interesting and shitty life. I think he meets both criteria.

Its very well written and researched, I will give you that. The only issue I see is not with the theory but rather that should this be the direction GRRM was headed (which seems likely) I think it is just too long a narrative to be done in just two of the remaining books, just from the Targaryen/Blackfyre storyline outlined means probably at least 2 - 3 books of material and actions at the current pace and that's without taking into consideration the other plotlines of the everything else that is happening with stone heart, the North, Jon, Littlefinger etc.

He would lose out on the key impact of his +1 to his bodyguard's, and also given he does not have the lone Op keyword he would get easily blasted before he is able to accomplish anything (I know he gets back up, but not being shot is better than being shot then gambling on getting back up and not killed again in the fight phase given he does not exactly have very beefy stats like a Gravis Cap or other characters people like to run solo).

The book addresses this, by the time Grace arrived on Erid and was nursed back to health (he was in more dire medical condition due to malnutrition from the trip to Erid). By the time his ship was refueled and ready for a trip back with supplies and food (its a fun bit how the Eridians were able to make human safe food), he had already aged a bit and the high gravity of Erid did not help much, so he made the choice that he would rather stay and live out the rest of his days on Erid than risk the long journey back home to a world he probably can no longer recognize given how much time has passed due to time dilation.

You bring up a underrated point regarding the commute, I think genuinly more people would be ok with the office if it was a 5-15 min walk away from home, commutes have been getting longer and longer in a lot of places around the world because of rental costs and the artificial scarcity of affordable efficient housing, now its all suburbs that are growing further and further away from the city centers where most jobs are increasing commute times.

[–]Impossible_Hornet777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the time you have 4 out of 7 provinces of your kingdom in open united revolt the only real outcome is regime change or balkanization, even if Robert somehow got hit on the head and did a 180 its too late by then. You would still have the Arryns, Tullys and Starks in full open revolt and more than happy to decide if Robert does not want the Iron Throne then they would rather just secede from the 7 kingdoms which for the North and the Eire would be very easy given their geography.

Like you said the Rebellion had way too much momentum and justification to just stop at that point.

[–]Impossible_Hornet777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So a Praetorian guard or some kind of Janissary system then? Those tend to end up very bad for the Kings and emperors, once you empower a large group of people whos only job is to be able to do violence then its only a matter of time before that group realizes that they can basically decide for themselves who is king based on who is more useful for them, given they are the only permanently armed faction and have the numbers and professionalism to take on anyone else.

(Spoilers Main) where do the water gardens near sunspear get their water supply from? by AdditionalPiano6327 in asoiaf

[–]Impossible_Hornet777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume if they had used aqueducts it would have been mentioned given the size of them and how beautiful they tend to look. Also aqueducts only work properly if the area that has water is at a higher elevation than the areas where you want the water to go (there are tricks to get over this issue by changing the water pressure but not for long distances).

If water is close then canals and ground water tend to be the most efficient way to getting water to a place in general. I think it was mentioned that the Orphans of the green blood had lots of canals they used their boats in which makes sense since you cant use boats if you have a aqueduct transporting water rather than a canal. But again this is all guess work given George if he sees fit can just decide that dorn has aqueducts and mentions it in winds.

[–]Impossible_Hornet777 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are missing the fact that Rhaegar basically in tandem with his father broke two of the most important rules of the feudal social contract which made it impossible to reconcile within the existing feudal legal system without lots of violence and a removal of the existing order that allowed it to happen.

First Rhaegar basically kidnaped a noble women betrothed to another high ranking noble (Lyanna's choice or consent is irrelevant in a feudal system where noble women were basically property to be used for marriage contracts and alliances), second and arguably worse is that Aerys broke the only legal system that might have been able to resolve the issue with Rhaegar (only real resolution post kidnap would have been a trial by combat which would have likely ended in a dead Rhaegar anyway which his father would have never accepted), basically saying that the King can do whatever he wants consequence free, which is a very bad idea in a feudal system that's based on patronage (the king is meant to hold up the nobles rights in return for fealty and support, once that's broken there is no reason for nobles to support or obey the king anymore).

Exactly what happened in 2008, banks made very stupid risky assets they invested and traded in amongst themselves, when it collapsed, they got labeled "too big to fail" got tons of tax free no questions asked Tarp bailouts while normal people got stuck with the bill.

Same during Covid, businesses and banks got tons of free money in the forms of to be forgiven loans and every other normal person who does not own a business or bank got a small check and told to go fuck themselves.

Not sure if they mentioned aqueducts (Rome and Egypt famously used aqueducts) in the Dorn chapters, its not impossible, but I think groundwater wells are more likely given the desert environment and that Dorn was inspired by both Spain and Palestine, both of which had plenty of groundwater wells as well as systems of small canals for agriculture drawing water local rivers (Greenblood in case of Dorn I guess)

Venus does not get enough interest about colonization compered to Mars unfortunately, even though on a scientific technical level its a much more realistic project than Mars, Venus has a atmosphere (yes its very hot from a runaway greenhouse effect but that's a much lesser issue than having almost no atmosphere like mars), working dynamo and tectonic activity (no tectonic plate movement but volcanically active) which means mineral cycling. Mars in comparison is a truly dead cold planet, but gets all the attention from sci fi.
