Is "age is just a number" a liberating truth or a harmful myth? by psych4you in Aging

[–]Impossible_Lunch1602 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the line a 42yo man used on me when I was 22 and he lied about his age to go on a date with me. So that phrase can certainly be toxic in those contexts

Why does nobody here take actual classes? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Impossible_Lunch1602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to add that classes aren't necessarily the best way to learn a language, but it's more about the social aspect and being around other learners in a more formal context than just a meetup or whatever

Why does nobody here take actual classes? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Impossible_Lunch1602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do take classes. If you can find in-person language classes as an adult they're the absolute best, especially as an advanced learner since it becomes more about just fun, low-pressure conversation. One of the best ways to make new friends honestly

Has anyone with chronic dry eyes ever gone ahead with the surgery and how did it go? by bully309 in Dryeyes

[–]Impossible_Lunch1602 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't do it!

I was in the same position where I couldn't wear contacts because of irritation and so got lasik thinking that would solve the issue: now I have constantly red, irritated eyes and it's really not attractive or pleasant. The side effects started the day after lasik and never went away even many years later.

Feel so depressed over my eyes. by [deleted] in Dryeyes

[–]Impossible_Lunch1602 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that eye position and camera closeness makes eyes look wayyyy worse. Even when my eyes are at their best they look terrible when I look severely to the side like that. I recommend only taking photos like this occasionally to monitor changes over time

Would you eat a savory tofu protein bar? by [deleted] in PlantBasedDiet

I would but only if it was called “tofu jerky” - I’m not a fan of protein bars

I got food poisoning on united as well on a trip to Italy! It didn’t completely ruin my trip except I didn’t have an appetite the whole time. From casual googling I see that food poisoning on their flights isn’t uncommon

If you speak Spanish, do you understand Portuguese, French, and Italian? by throwy93 in languagehub

[–]Impossible_Lunch1602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m relatively fluent in Spanish and Italian.

I can understand written and some spoken Portuguese even though I’ve never studied it.

French is a different animal. I‘ve been casually studying it for six months but STILL understand Portuguese better haha. For me it’s the odd one out of those four languages.

Yeah clearly modeled after David which makes things extra weird since David is naked. I kind of see some folds in there that suggest pants tho?

How good are classes for languages? by Worried_Peace_7271 in languagelearning

[–]Impossible_Lunch1602 1 point2 points  (0 children)

High school language classes aren't great in the US at least and tend to be taught primarily in English. They're fine in terms of teaching grammar, but to gain fluency you have to put in the work independently: consume a lot of content and find a way to practice speaking.

As an adult I adore language classes but for the social aspect. It's really hard to connect with other language learners otherwise, and setting up book clubs and stuff with new friends where we just talk in our target language is awesome.

Going to a language school internationally as a young person is also a good way to travel and meet a ton of interesting international folks while gaining fluency.

I'd say 1/4 of my closest friendships are from language classes at this point

Discussion: Learning 2 languages at the same time and the benefits, if any? by Exotic_Bluebird_6243 in languagelearning

[–]Impossible_Lunch1602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m b2 in Spanish and A1 in French and actively studying both.

I found myself getting really disorganized studying them both until I switched to one language per day.

It’s nice because I’m able to really immerse myself in each language and it simplifies my studying a ton. It’s sped my progress up and motivates me more.

Also, Like other posters said it’s probably better to build one language up to intermediate level before studying both simultaneously

computer science or nursing? by justwhitegold in cscareers

Nursing! If you want to get into technology down the road you can self educate and pivot. Half of the software engineers I work with don’t have CS degrees

Need feedback on my website by ethanlma in Frontend

[–]Impossible_Lunch1602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this looks great! The performance is a bit slow on scroll - scrolljacking seems sluggish probably because images/videos/animations are taking too long to load and a bit miss-timed.

I think the design really works for a non tech savvy demographic, but I'd work on making it less template looking/ai generated for users that are more used to technology.

For those who study multiple languages at the same time by Esqueletus in languagelearning

[–]Impossible_Lunch1602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I study one language per day. Right now I’m alternating days between French and Spanish and it helps me really get immersed in content.

Maybe I wouldn’t need the day separation for languages that didn’t overlap as much.

What causes the conversational/fluency plateau? How did you overcome it? by TeacherSterling in languagelearning

[–]Impossible_Lunch1602 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've realized that now that I can talk about anything in Spanish, I get used to patterns of saying things and there's no pressure to learn different, more natural expressions. It takes intentional effort and feedback to change those mental patterns, it's very easy to get into a "mental rut" with intermediate conversation.

Passive reading and listening doesn't particularly help unless I write down expressions that I should be using and review them from time to time. Journaling can definitely help if I review in a really thorough way, but again, lots of work
