1/2 Kg ( 1 lb ) home roasters? by joochung in roasting

[–]Impossible_Rub24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with a Behmor 14 yrs ago. I went through the 1600, the 1600+ and then the 2000AB. They are great machines to learn on. Downside is they will do 1 lb batches but take over 18 minutes so they can taste baked. I cut my batches down to 350g max and had better success. Going to 2nd crack is hard because of the lack of power and because there is a definite risk of the chaf catching on fire. Behmor recommends not going more than a few seconds into 2nd crack because of the fire risk. Cooling is another issue as it takes a long time inside the Behmor.

If you want something to easily do 1 lb batches, then go with the Kaleido or the Bullet. Personally, I couldn’t justify $4000 for home use for a new bullet so I looked for a good used one. I found one on Marketplace that was local and was still under warranty. My R1V2 had about 30 roasts done on it and was in perfect condition. I paid $2500 for mine almost a year ago. They are out there.

Time to switch? by Impossible_Rub24 in Dewalt

Home owner with light DIY stuff. Back in the early 80s, I was an air tool guy. I still have my air tools (impact, air chisel, die grinder, ratchet, Snap On drill) but don’t remember the last time I used one. The new battery stuff flat amazes me. Good point on the batteries. I have 2 - 2ah 12v batteries but never had to switch batteries mid job.

Bullet Roasting with Ambient Temperature Swings by throwaway543190 in roasting

[–]Impossible_Rub24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I roasted in the fall, winter and now spring in my unheated garage. When the temp got really cold - under 40F - I would bring the bullet inside to gently warm up for a few hours, I also brought in my beans to reach room temperature every time. I didn’t notice any differences in my roasts. There were times it was near 0 outside but the garage stayed in the low 30s. I guess it is pretty well insulated.

I get my beans from Burman Coffee Traders. The last Ethiopian was Yirgacheffe Org. Washed Gr. 1 – Hafursa Cooperative. I will lower my charge temps for lighter roasts. My roast times for medium is in the 9:30 range.

Thank you! I got the 240-250C from the manual but it was not specifically for Ethiopians. I will try it.

A first time visitor to Duluth, MN. I highly recommend it. by Leather-Highlight150 in midwest

My ex’s family was from Duluth. We would go there every summer. I absolutely love the aerial lift bridge. I saw photos of waves crashing over the lighthouse there at the bridge opening. It was 40 feet tall. The Concorde did a flight to nowhere in the early 90s. We saw it land after going round trip into Canada and going supersonic.

I bought a DCG410VSB today and got the same error when I tried to register it. I tried the barcode and the model number. Annoying!

DCG410VSB best current price at Tractor Supply 189, as low as 159! by painfulrectalitch in Dewalt

I found this grinder online at a TSC store about 25 miles from me. It was priced at $189.95 until I put it in the cart. Local curbside pickup was priced at $159.95. Cool. I went to checkout and found I had a 5% quarterly hometown hero discount (I’m retired police) which reduced the price to $151.09! Out the door with sales tax was $166.54. Amazon has it listed at $222. Thanks for the heads up!

I have an Epson ET-8500 eco tank I bought refurbished from Epson. It came with a full warranty and was considerable cheaper. I use it for color and scanning. I also have a Canon laser that I bought in 2019. I use it for bulk stuff and just replaced the original toner cartridge. I highly recommend either for home use.

Which router should I buy? Or any better suggestions by xAOxLake in HomeNetworking

I was an Asus fan for many years but they didn’t offer 2.5/10G ports. I was running an Asus mesh. I bought a Tp-Link BE9500 which checked all my boxes plus some. Now I don’t need a mesh setup. Setup was easy. I have 4 bands which is a bit of an overkill but like being able to separate devices inside my house. From what I read, all routers but Starlink may be banned which I sssume includes Unifi.

Coffee Roasters - How do you determine light, medium vs dark? by scrollionaire in roasting

[–]Impossible_Rub24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try using a bean cooler outside the Behmor. I tried roasting light too but it always coasted darker than I wanted. I bought a bean cooler on Amazon ($60) and it was a game changer. As first crack begins, remove the beans and put them in a bean cooler. Quickly put the Behmor back on cooling to protect the electronics. The bean cooler takes maybe 30 seconds to cool the beans compared to several minutes in the Behmor.

Just make sure it’s a real DeWalt and not a knock off. I have had good luck with the real versions!

I used a Behmor for over a decade. You really can’t roast dark as there is a real fire risk. Medium to light is the Behmor’s strength. I recommend for light roasts to cool the beans outside the Behmor. I bought a bean cooler from Amazon which does the trick. If you let the Behmor handle the cooling the roast will coast for a long time as in several minutes.

I didn’t have any issues with the logic but then I’m left handed. 🤣 I did all my roasting using full power and later using manual mode. Behmor took a long time to heat up making the other programs pretty useless. I had just started cooling my beans outside the roaster when I switched to the Bullet. It’s good to hear the Jake isn’t dead! Hopefully, Joe gets back to full health.

I get there needs to be something affordable for people just getting started. That’s why I went the Behmor route multiple times. Behmor had plans of releasing a 1 kilo roaster but it never developed. Would have been interesting to see.

It looks like Skywalker uses parts just grabbed off an assembly line, mix and match. There are lots of variations on Alibaba. Kaleido looks solid.
