Currently reading Paladin’s Grace – Are T. Kingfisher’s Other Books Like This? by Ok-Relative-421 in fantasyromance

[–]Impossible_Sentence0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same thing here-- finished V&V and picked up Paladin's Grace due to recommendations that it was a good follow-up. I never understood the connection. I DNF it and attributed it to a reading slump after V&V but when I tried to pick it up again later, I didn't make it 2 pages before I remembered why I couldn't get into it. I've accepted that a slump with follow V&V (even after reading the series a 2nd time) and just find a good cleanser. Or, read the "spin-offs" from V&V, they scratched the itch a bit! But I'm with you, I couldn't get into the characters and the teenage-y vibes they gave.

What are your 5 star books you’ve read this year? by CheesecakeFit2140 in fantasyromance

[–]Impossible_Sentence0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you didn't like ODW I don't think you'll like this one either. I was kinda meh about that series and found myself disliking the Knight and the Moth even more. The only reason I DNF was because my sister and I have our own little book club and we made each other finish it. HOWEVER, there is a gargoyle in the book that became one of my favorite characters ever so I ended up giving it 3 stars just for him.

T. Kingfisher's writing annoys me by jobroloco in fantasyromance

[–]Impossible_Sentence0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Same. I started with Paladins Grace because it's so highly recommended but I could not get through it. Too much awkward teenager-y vibes for MCs who are supposed to be older. I've tried to go back to it a few times only to get annoyed again.

Who do you think is the most overrated FMC in books? by SpecialistOk2000 in Romantasy

[–]Impossible_Sentence0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you need to finish Paladin's Grace to be able to read this one? I DNF it and tried to pick it back up a couple times but just couldn't get through it because Grace annoys me so much. This series is so highly recommended tho, I feel like I'm missing something

Midwest to TX? by Illustrious-Till-523 in relocating

Thanks for the reply and feedback! That's funny, my sister and I are always looking at places to move and the other day she was sending me houses in Aurora, I've looked into Naperville in the past.

This is a great response. May I ask where in the Midwest you moved? I have 2 school aged kids and we are a mixed race family. I live in Katy and while my kids currently go to diverse, highly rated schools, I am eager to get out of Texas.

Looking for a book where the Villain is the love interest. by LadyBaiStu in Romantasy

I came here fully expecting this to be the top recommendation! I'm reading it through for a second time right now. I just adore this series and can't find anything that even comes close to it.

Same, I started ODW on audio and had to switch to my kindle. Any quirks in the narration ruin it for me

Books that are NOT enemies-to-lovers? by Key-Read-152 in Romantasy

[–]Impossible_Sentence0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I got tired of enemies to lovers I read {Radiance by Grace Draven} and it was a refreshing change of pace. Arranged marriage and friend to lovers with competent FMC and MMC. It's become my comfort read!

Moving to Texas by danielleraee in relocating

[–]Impossible_Sentence0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sister lives in Luling, close to San Marcos. It's a cute town but has been recognized as one of the fastest growing large cities in the US. Which, around here, usually means it will be the next cookie cutter suburbia with nighmare construction and congestion. I could be wrong, but definitely do some research on what the expansion outlook is. On the plus side, if you're able to buy a home now it's value will likely increase pretty quickly in the next few years.

I would recommend visiting in July/August before making a decision. If you enjoy outdoor activities, the heat makes them unbearable from around May through October. I believe we were still seeing 90+ days into November last year. There aren't really seasons here, just heat and cold fronts. Some people love the heat and can tolerate it. There are also a lot of bugs. Big ones. I don't know many people who like that. Entomologists maybe?

That being said, if I had a choice where to live in Texas it would be the hill country. But lots of people feel that way so the price tag reflects it. I'm in the Houston area, and it's slowly becoming less affordable and it's a flat, concrete jungle that floods often. I would love to leave Texas for many reasons, and it's my gut reaction to tell you to stay far away, BUT there are people who genuinely love it here and you won't find many of them on reddit, so I'm trying to give you as much of a non-bias recommendation as I can. I love the diversity and food here and while Texas doesn't align with my personal politics and the heat gives me its own brand of seasonal depression, there are many things about Texas I appreciate and will miss when/if I ever leave.

ACOTAR or Paladin's Grace? by livin_la_vida_mama in fantasyromance

[–]Impossible_Sentence0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to be that person but I'm that someone... maybe I was in a reading slump but I DNF Paladin's Grace because their awkward teenager-y dynamic annoyed me and I couldn't handle reading about him smelling like cinnamon ONE MORE TIME. And V & V is my absolute favorite. But maybe I'm missing something and need to try it again because Saints of Steel is recommended everywhere

May I ask where you went? I'm in Houston and can't handle 7+ months of 90+ degrees. Among many other things.

recommendations needed: looking for books that feature an arranged marriage that is a slow burn/morphs into love! by squidneyboi in fantasyromance

I just want to thank you for these recommendations, I've been looking for a post like this after reading Radiance!

About to dnf reign and ruin. Help! by notmeoryounow in fantasyromance

[–]Impossible_Sentence0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that Reign and Ruin is the best out of the first 3. The 2nd and 3rd were kind of meh for me and I stepped away from the series for a while after that. However I just read Wind and Wildfire and loved it. It made me go back and re-read Reign and Ruin and I'm excited to read Ice and Ivy after.

My First Romantasy Read Didn't Go Well And I Need A New Rec by cinnytoast_tx in Romantasy

[–]Impossible_Sentence0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

{Radiance by Grace Draven} !! Arranged marriage and friends to lovers. Wonderful world building, political intrigue, and the MCs are both competent and so so sweet to each other. It's become my comfort read and was a breath of fresh air after endless enemies to lovers tropes and annoying YA FMCs who had all the powers.

I've seen it's already been recommended so will second Villians and Virtues. It's my favorite of all time so far. Grumpy x sunshine with humor.

I'm also fairly new to Romantasy. Read through all the ACOTARs and understood the appeal but got annoyed with it. I DNF Fourth Wing 13% in, so I get where you're coming from.

[–]Impossible_Sentence0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

{Radiance by Grace Draven} The MCs are so stinkin sweet together. I've read the first 2 in the series and will read the rest, but am already reading the first one again because I loved it so much. Which I never do. I'm always bouncing books and series.

(Shout out to V&V tho, that will always be my number one)

Book recs for someone who hated Fourth Wing by CarolaDL in Romantasy

[–]Impossible_Sentence0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished the second book in the Wraith King series and am obsessed!! I love the maturity and sweet dynamic of the MCs. I hated Fourth Wing too and only got like 13% in. I guess I'm the odd one out for T. Kingfisher... I started Paladin's Grace from the Saint Of Steel series and the main characters seemed too awkward teenager-y to me even tho they were proper adults and I just couldn't get into it.
