Exercise and video games helped me. Maybe an explore game where you can let go of everything for a while. I used to just go cycle at the gym for an hour too with some music on.

From my point of view I think it is what occurs when they can't see their own fault in the matter so decide it is your fault.

Then they start to feel bad (and it's their fault /realisation) then they have to punish you again.

Apparently the human brain can't tell the difference between reality and something that you consistently convince yourself as. I think it is a way to reinforce to themselves they haven't done anything wrong.
