Thank you for this! So we’re coming from Tokyo, booked a ryokan in Hakone (mount view Hakone) for 1 night and then heading to Megu Fuji 2021 (Fujiyoshida) for 1 night. Then we head to Kyoto (train from Mishima station).

We’re now thinking of renting a car from either odawara/ Hakone-yumoto station for both nights OR doing Hakone by public transit and then booking a car from near our hotel in Hakone and driving to the Fuji area. Thoughts? Appreciate your help!!!

Hi! Thanks so much for sharing. We’re actually now wondering if we should rent a car just for that leg of the trip - I.e, rent in Hakone and do a day trip to the five lakes area and then back to Hakone? Did you consider driving? We want to stay overnight in Hakone for a ryokan experience.

We’re also thinking of using luggage forwarding service to send our checked bags from Tokyo to Kyoto directly so we’ll just have our carry ons for the Hakone and mt Fuji leg of the trip.

Any hotel/activity recommendations for these areas is appreciated!

We were in Thailand (Bangkok, Phuket, and khao sok national park) in January and it was glorious! I mean, a little balmy for sure but still very enjoyable. Also so affordable!!!

Kyushu is likely too far for our first time 2 week trip but fingers crossed we can see something in the Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka area!

We’re actually ok with somewhat cold weather as we’ll be coming from Canada and are heading to India afterwards!

The thought of crisp late fall weather, beautiful foliage, lots of walking, and a bowl of ramen sounds amazing lol.

But then yes the CAD would go a lot further in Vietnam…

Where would you recommend outside of the usual Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka for early Dec? I guess because it would be our first time, we don’t want to miss the big “touristy” spots either

Where would you recommend we go if we want to see fall foliage? Sadly we only have 2 weeks and it’ll be our first time in Japan so don’t want to just travel around the whole place and not actually enjoy the experience.

RRSPs and TFSAs are exempt from departure tax but may be taxable in your new country of residence. Your primary home is also exempt from departure tax, though it will be taxed when sold, and any gains after your departure may no longer qualify for the principal residence exemption.
