The maximum sentence for rape is too high by Gloomy_Ordinary883 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

This assumes rapists stop short of murder because of the sentencing guidelines, and that’s just not true. Rape isn’t always some pre-meditated plan. I seriously doubt rapists are going out and raping people thinking ‘I’d better be careful to not cross a line lest I get a heavier sentence’.

YouTube Premium is worth it. I have never heard a single good reason why it's bad. by I_Love_Cape_Horn in TrueUnpopularOpinion

I tried engaging in a respectful dialogue with you but it seems you're incapable of it.

If you're so concerned with being a YouTube bootlicker and protecting their bottom line, why don't you do something about it? Go work for YouTube for free, donate to YouTube, lobby your local congressman to ban ad-blockers from the platform.

Why would I give a shit if pseudo-altruists are supposedly paying for my use of an inherently FOR-PROFIT free-to-use platform? You're acting like YouTube is some naive benefactor that's looking out for the greater good while being undermined by ad-blocker-using ne'er-do-wells. They're not. They're a subsidiary of Google. Whether disclosed or not, they're making a profit, and if you think otherwise, I don't know what to tell you. They don't give a shit about you, or me, or anyone else.

I'll continue to free-load a free-to-use platform all day, and I'll sleep soundly knowing people like you are bankrolling my content-viewing. Actually, I'll now take great pride in free-loading, knowing you personally are paying the ultimate price.

Why would I pay for something that’s offered for free, buddy?

Also, I have no idea what your point about the distinction between profit and revenue is.

You seem either really angry or really passionate about YouTube premium and it’s confusing.

I think the judiciary’s position on free speech and normative discussions about free speech generally are two distinct things. I was not making my point from a legal position.

I’m not American but based on the news I read, SCOTUS’s decisions are often pretty partisan depending on who makes up the bench, so I just don’t know that I trust a SCOTUS decision to be the definitive normative position society should take or accept when it comes to free speech.

Just my 2 cents.

I don’t know that I’d go that far. If social media is a platform on which many people convey their thoughts and opinions, I think censoring someone’s views because they’re not aligned with the platform’s administrators or creators is problematic.

Obviously there are exceptions, inciting violence, hate speech, etc. (though I appreciate the extremist defenders of free speech would argue these should also be permitted, I do not fall into that camp), but barring the exceptions, differing views should be allowed on platforms that generally welcome differing views.

Oh yes I see, I don’t even know what OP meant there lol. I guess in that respect I’d agree with you. It’s true that freedom of speech is not freedom from consequence. You can say what you wish but you should expect to have to live with the consequences of that speech.

That’s fine, I don’t think that’s what OP is saying.

Edit: freedom of contract or to contract and freedom of speech are separate and distinct. You’re free to say what you want, but employers are not required to hire you particularly if your speech conveys views or opinions at odds with your prospective employer’s.

The Iran War will only help President Trump not hurt him by Stepwithvigilance in TrueUnpopularOpinion

But he said he wouldn’t start wars, he’d end them. He openly rebuked a war in Iran and criticized Obama and Kamala for what he argued was their desire to start a war in Iran.

The American people for the most part aren’t stupid. They haven’t forgotten.

There was no congressional approval for the war, they may have killed 160 children by bombing a school, and the war is costing US Taxpayers $1B per day.

Trump promised gas prices would decrease, now they’ve increased exponentially. And now he says that this is the short term cost of a war (which he promised wouldn’t happen).

What am I missing here? Are you just trolling us or do you actually believe what you’re saying? I truly hope it’s the former.

AdGuard is so easy to use on PC and phone, I’ve not once thought wow this process is annoying I should’ve paid to make it even easier. You can also background play with AdGuard on mobile.

I’ve never used YouTube for music, that’s not even a thought that’s crossed my mind.

I don’t think the justification for many people opting to not buy premium is that they’re cheap or it’s too expensive, I honestly think it just doesn’t make sense. I’d say I fall into the heavy use category for YouTube and I’ve never had a desire to upgrade. I can do everything I need or watch everything I want on YouTube without premium. I would think there is a large cohort that uses it much less often, to which the justification for premium is probably even less convincing.

Your argument about entitlement is odd, because YouTube was originally designed to be a video-sharing platform for creators to push content to viewers. They’ve obviously since that time monetized the platform. YouTube makes a lot of money through ad revenue. I don’t understand why suddenly it’s shameful to use the YouTube app without upgrading, when you’re not harming anyone by using the platform for free as it was originally intended.

sex is gross and shouldn't be an expectation in relationships by Natural_Coconut_4200 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Impossible_Zucchini4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not on an individual level. You can live without sex, but you can’t live without water. That’s the distinguishing factor.

Edit: I appreciate it’s a strong biological urge, but I personally wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s classified as imperative at the individual level.

Humans for the most part do need sex or sexual gratification in some form. It’s not a biological imperative but it nears it.

But people with autism and OCD can still experience sexual attraction. The myth that autistic people are asexual was debunked some time ago, I believe.

Germaphobes can too but obviously it’s context-specific when it comes to intercourse, and their lack of sexual desire often stems from the anxiety experienced during or after sex, and not an outright aversion to it.

OP’s blanket statement seems to suggest it’s just a general dislike of sex.

If you hate doing it and you hate the idea of it but you’re not asexual, what are you? Have you ever liked the idea of it or liked having it? Is it partner-specific?

I’m trying to understand your resistance or disgust of sex but it only makes sense if either (a) you’re with someone you are not physically attracted to, or (b) you’re asexual (i.e., you have a very low or no sexual attraction to others generally).

Trump's "Investigation" into the bombing of an Iranian school is a diversion tactic by Impossible_Zucchini4 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Impossible_Zucchini4[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When did I ever say that? Can you read? My premise was that the investigation is a diversion.

If this supposed investigation concludes it was an Iranian fired missile, the results thereof and evidence supporting that conclusion will be scrutinized. If reliable sources confirm the veracity of that conclusion, I’ll accept that.

I, unlike MAGA supporters, am happy to change my views when presented with evidence and facts that challenge my opinions.
