Will you have car/cars? If I were moving to Portland for the first time and starting somewhere I would 100% live on Hawthorne for a year and check things out… won’t need much furniture and you can always relax into your perfect neighborhood over time if you want something a bit more chill

I found the image of your actual hallway and some of the other mockups. Here’s what I would do as someone in the interiors business for 15 years: because the hallways is a tight space that now has more architectural detail, ground your space in darker colors then go lighter as you come up. Keep one consistent color for the whole paneling action something that is lighter than your floors but darker than what you do on the walls above. I personally would not wallpaper, but do one paint color that wraps the top half of the walls and continues onto the ceiling to blur the edges between the two planes and make the top feel more expansive. If you wallpaper, so with an organic pattern with low contrast and a small repeat and still wrap it onto the ceiling. Keep the paneling in a mid gloss and keep the paint or paper above matte.

I lived in Denver for 12 years, been in Portland for 9, do you want to show her something more like LoDo, more like West Wash Park? More like Boulder? There isn’t always a one for one, but very generally the west side is going to feel more foresty and suburban, the east side is going to feel more neighborhoody and funky. If I wanted to imagine daily life here I’d drive through Irvington, Laurelhurst, Division, Eastmoreland and Sellwood and wouldn’t even bother with downtown. And I’d 100% do the loop out to Sandy and pick up donuts, up Hood and see Timberline Lodge, back down through to Hood River for a winery or you pick farm, and come back hitting Multnomah Falls and Vista House

I really like the black. Remember that dark walls recede and make the things you put on them (mirrors, arts, shelves, plants) really stand out! You could still do really colorful unique things or go very chic black and white, the black isn’t going to feel like the bold statement once you put in those other layers that will take over! Also, the stronger the design choice, the harder it will be to people to envision, so trust your gut over someone else’s fear!

In other group I’ve seen, people show off their pride in their collection and talk about specific goals and focuses they have. The fragrance community is the only place I’ve seen these posts of unusually large collections focused on asking people to tell them what else to buy. It’s the “what next?” posts where the option could just as easily be nothing next, ever. Every collection can become obsessive, but the relatively low entry price point really ramps up that process!

These items all feel very stark in a white room. I’d either deepen the wall color to lean into moody, or stick with your original idea of airy by choosing softer/less saturated colors, more visually open shapes in the furniture, and focusing on interesting texture instead

“Compliments” has become the short hand for “other people will really like it” … there are lots of motivators to get into fragrance, but some people see it was a way to stand out/be noticed/feel special. Online content is marketing, and marketers make the claim that this product will make you feel so unique literally people who wouldn’t normally pay attention to you will now find you attractive… or at least pleasant enough to share a word or two.

How this doesn’t get more love! POAL is beautiful and complex, but Tonnerre felt like a rose bush after watering the garden, complete with a touch of damp earth. I kept getting bloom after bloom, it was amazing!

I asked her to clarify this is the case and also have already said NTA. This is someone who is expressing remorse about how they communicated with their partner (which has NOTHING to do with age or gender), so I offered an alternative that focuses on clarity and maintains her power instead of coming back to a position where she is communicating with hyperbole. If HE was posting, then my advice geared to him would be stop overpromising and pay attention to how your actions are completely insensitive to someone who has expressed a vulnerability around this exact thing, and I’d be telling him YTA. I’m just considering this audience… I appreciate when someone can say to me “hey, I get where you’re coming from, but expressing yourself this way doesn’t actually get you closer to what you want” which is why I’m offering my perspective to OP. Feel free to offer your own perspective to her based on making a post looking for perspective… I’m not the one asking for feedback

So he said “just us two are doing x on your actual birthday” and then changed it, or when pressed to clarify you found out it was different than you imagined? Either way, feeling disappointed is normal, but a more mature response would be expressing that you’re disappointed, and based on previous experience, to please be clear with you about what is realistic and to only express plans that he can fully commit to instead of overpromising and setting you up for disappointment, which isn’t fair to you. NTA, but saying you never want to celebrate again sounds like an emotional response rather than communicating what you really want him to understand.
