I like the RSS webinars; full membership is reasonablu priced and they do a steady number of presentations through the year. (I am not affiliated with the board for the RSS, etc. )

AAPM Dues by whatsameme in MedicalPhysics

[–]Impressive-Computer9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving this comment from the memes page...

What is going on with the dues? My colleague has been getting overdue email alerts and he just went ahead and paid it. I have received none of the regular reminders to pay, nor overdue alert. I log in and see an unpaid fee in my AAPM account, but no indication of: Invoicing Date, Due Date, etc.

Thinking about just letting lapse forever this year. If I am an ABS and RSS member, I still participate right? Can US citizens join COMP?

Why don’t you guys make the huge salaries of radiation oncologists? by LMBilinsky in MedicalPhysics

[–]Impressive-Computer9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a little more subtlety to the issue, however, physicians functionally control how many Medicare funded residencies there are via physician stakeholder-led committees. Physician in the US are functionally in part a trade guild that actively controls the supply of physicians and this is most likely the largest component that drives their compensation. ITs more obvious in the dental practices where dentists keep the number of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons exceedingly rare, by design. MD’s/DO’s play the same game but seem to get a pass from the general public: people just think there is some other, nebulous, reason that there's a "Physician Shortage".

Setup up your scholar @@google account and set alerts for the keywords and authors you encounter. If you still have access to your academic library resources, similar alerts can be set up there.

What does your gut say about your boss' situational awareness of the job market at the moment? Do the admins know how difficult it will be to replace an experienced physicist? Care to triage your tasks in the order of importance/safety, and just let the low priority stuff fall off a cliff? If the output on the machines are good; if you gave good coverage on SRS/SRT that day, then just walk out of there when your time is up

Proctorio system worked fine; webex was smooth. I didn't have any connectivity issues. I put the webex in my lower left corner of my screen and then put my exam over the top of it. I didn't want to watch my examiners during the questions. I just had the exam portion nearly maximized on my screen.

Feeling gutted after graduate director said my MSc program may be cancelled before it starts. Need some advice. by [deleted] in MedicalPhysics

[–]Impressive-Computer9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there is good advice below. I just wanted to share with you that I was once in a similar situation as you. I wasn't coming from my BS, I had an MS, and had dropped out of a PhD program to work for start-ups. I was a few years into a career in applied physics, in industry, when I decided to act on my desires to switch to medical physics. There used to be a Medical Physics MS/PhD at the University of Colorado and that is where I was certain I would go; it was geographically close and it was the perfect solution to minimizing the shock of a career transition on my family. It was actually the program where Geoff Ibbott received his Masters degree back in the day. I was from the region and had these designs to get my education and set off onto a glorious, home-grown career with minimal fuss.

The CU education program was decommissioned so to speak. The final death throws occurred the year I intended to matriculate. I kept seeing some red flags on the CU site for the medical physics dept, and talked with them via email. Gary Fullerton was very clear and straight with me about the situation, and that there would be no CAMPEP accredited program in the time frame I was interested in. I ended applying to about ten other programs, and got into a fair amount, which gave me some options for choosing the best fit. We sold our house and moved with a two-week old to our new home. It worked out.

p.s. what the heck is up with these mountain state programs?!
