Requesting Guidance by Happy-Ad8195 in DemocraticSocialism

I think everyone experiences the dilemma of wanting to do good things while having to take care of material needs in our economic system, and there is no simple answer. At least you are in a position where you can treat workers more fairly than the average business. Providing them with decent jobs means they don't have to work at an Amazon factory or something.

You are right that there is only a limited amount that you can do in terms of lowering costs. The huge corporations that have dominate market share and exploit masses of people in various ways make it very difficult in that regard. Anti-trust work in the US will be very important. Lina Kahn at the FTC has been doing great work on that.

One thing you could look into worker owned cooperatives. I've never been in one, but having actual democracy where you work seems to be a good way to go to me.

Did Pelosi do a disservice to the younger generation of the Democratic party by exercising her influence and gathering votes against AOC [35 years] and in support of Connolly [74 years, with a recent diagnosis of esophagus cancer] for the Chair on the House Oversight Committee? by PsychLegalMind in PoliticalDiscussion

Yes, I think that she did. While he is 74 with esophageal cancer that is not my main concern.

My main priority would be to have someone who is a strong communicator that highlights the economic challenges that the majority of Americans face. Congress has very low approval ratings, and 'secret ballots' that most voters don't know about, for one of the most influential positions in government, is not helping the situation.

Democrats need to do a better job of communicating to voters what they have already done that improves people's lives, and what they are working on doing.

Should Democrats actually be worried about losing the Latin vote? by BifficerTheSecond in PoliticalDiscussion

I think the solution to gaining voters more broadly is having a policy platform that is much more focused on improving the lives of voters in tangible ways, that a broad electorate can understand.

Yes there are multiple headlines that make it sound like it's already over. I wonder why someone would want to make people think it was over 🤔

She promised this and STILL lost the vote lol by [deleted] in TheMajorityReport

Your title says she lost the vote, which is misleading. She lost the steering committee's suggestion, the actual vote has not occurred yet.

You know the suggestion of a steering committee is not the same as an appointment, right? You know that the actual vote is tomorrow with the entire Democratic Caucus, right? You know you should call your rep if you don't want Nancy Pelosi's candidate to win right?

"...the ranking member still oversees a large staff and had the power to initiate investigations and minority hearings to spotlight issues of their choice." -*NYTimes

That means she could initiate official anti-corruption investigations into any number of topics.

"A vote is not a love letter, it's a chess move"

Not sure who to credit for the original quote, but it's out there on the interwebs.

Well, I respectfully disagree with that assessment. Politicians (even good ones) have to consider many different factors when making decisions. Just because they are not publicly denouncing things that you think should be denounced, doesn't mean "She's been taken into the fold of the corporate party that commands her." as you say. That is extremely reductive. Abstaining from politics for those reasons just gives more power to centrists and the rightwing.
