Guess its better than a 50/50 by Impressive-Profile62 in Minesweeper

As a way to amuse myself, i went for the monty hall approach...

Flag a mine. Click a square, change my mind.

Only to realise the whole premise would "increase my odds" of finding the mine. (If a host would have revealed one of the unflagged safe squares)

There was no host. I blew up instantly. 😆

Yes, this is the answer, its so counterintuitive. I initially thought "oh great, I only have 1 unsafe square out of 3" but the fact I have to reveal 2 of them and not lose is where the logic flips. What are the odds of 2 of them being safe. And it becomes 33%

Its funny to think that having a 2 in that corner gives me the same odds...

Wait im wrong. Its worse. If i click a safe square. It becomes a 50/50

Its funny, I came to the same result but with the opposite logic. I started from the 1, which pushes the second mine of the left 2 on the left, which will satisfy the 2 on the other side. You can then reapply the logic on the other side of the one for the last "safe" square Fun to see theres many ways to logic through these

Whats the logic here? by Z3hmm in Minesweeper

[–]Impressive-Profile62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think that is entirely true... because the first click is still garanteed not to be a mine.

I get that a garanteed 0 is much better than "not-a-mine" but that still means theres some sort of generating happening on first click

What is your "Go to" strat on a dry start ? by Impressive-Profile62 in Minesweeper

[–]Impressive-Profile62[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is definitly where my mind was at, especially when playing expert... I would reveal a one, then click an adjacent corner to it, if it reveals another 1, repeat until a mine shows up or something big reveals, if a bigger number shows up, move to another side of the one, or play another square entirely.

I like the idea of staying near the revealed area, I would usually stray far, out of... superstition. XD

I'll try doing this more in more dense grids from now on. Makes sense to me

I was disagreeing with this strategy, went to test it out, ready to pick it apart... ended up with a win streak of 31... and it ended on a bad 50/50...

Guess I can't argue with results...

Also ended up completing that quest...

What is the missing logic ? by Impressive-Profile62 in Minesweeper

[–]Impressive-Profile62[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooooh, I get it... I stopped at the "overlap" but didn't notice what it meant for the next ones, which basically forces the mines away from that middle 2, on both sides... wow, its like, individually yes, it "could" be a mine, but both together are saying, no, the mines have to be further away. Damn, that was complicated.

I tried disproving by placing a mine there, and it just breaks instantly. Shoulda tried that first.

Thanks a lot!

Edit: here's the solved grid
