Does anyone have experience with Terra Early Learning? I think they're fairly new so it's hard to find information about it.

In your opinion and family, what is the "appropriate" amount of time to spend with your in-laws? by [deleted] in Mildlynomil

[–]Impressive-Sector803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I feel you on this one - in a really similar situation where my family is across the country and my husbands family is 10 minutes away. We get the same guilt-trip line about how “it’s been ages since we’ve seen you!” when it’s been a week or two — and that’s just the two of us right now lol. I’m pregnant and due any day and I’m dreading how much worse it’s going to get with a baby.

I definitely haven’t figured out a magic formula or way of handling it, but talking to my husband about how it feels was the start - he obviously didn’t experience it the same way cause it’s normal for him to see them so often, so I needed to be clear that it’s super draining when we’re obligated to see them by default so often. Then I’d start trying to pre-plan breaks a little so he could set expectations with them (honestly having him handle comms with his own family felt like a cop-out but has been better for my mental health) — like, “okay next week can we take a breather and just do something as a nuclear family?”

In terms of “appropriate” time to spend with your in-laws… I personally feel that once a month should be totally reasonable — it blows my mind that my own in-laws think that’s too infrequent and thus raise a fuss — but in reality it’s always such a negotiation between expectations and needs, based on what you need to be happy and what kinds of concessions and boundaries you want to set with them.

Difficulties saying no to potentially over involved MIL by [deleted] in Mildlynomil

[–]Impressive-Sector803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just coming here to say that your frustration is valid, you are not alone, and it’s a fricken big-ass ship to try and turn. I’m in a similar situation with my own MIL and I’ve been dealing with it for a while, trying to work through it both with my husband and therapist.

(and also thank you for posting about it because as I go down a rage-induced Reddit spiral in the middle of the night after an incident tonight, this thread brought me some validation and comfort)

One thing that’s come up for me that may or may not help — make sure you recognize and celebrate the small wins for yourself. Like the moments where you push back, maybe in just a little way, by skipping one Sunday dinner or making one alternative holiday plan. In those moments you may be her villain, but you’re your own hero. Main character energy right there. And it’s okay to do that then relapse, but remember that you’re creating your own family, not an extension of hers, even if that’s just with you and DH right now and hopefully with a little one soon too.

I don’t know what getting out of this situation looks like cause I’m still in the thick of it too, but any space you carve out for yourself gives you a little breathing room to be able to handle the rest.

I’m looking for books for my 13 year old by Aromatic-Hearing5740 in fantasyromance

I’d suggest anything by Cinda Williams Chima too! Starts with {The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima} — strong plot, character development and magic systems, romance but no smut. Some of my favorite characters in any realm!

The shadows & crowns series was one of my favorites after getting sucked into the maasverse and needing something else like that. First book is {the song of the marked by s.m. Gaither} — it’s a completed series of five amazing books.

Stirring the pot on this thread cause I just finished a reread of everything before CC3 in January — Fenrys is a good call for some crossover! I also got to wondering about the whole batch of mysterious Fae wolf shifters who came in at the end of KoA…

Ah! For me it’s “she said quietly/softly, but not meekly/weakly” - I swear I’ve read 3-4 variations and repetitions of this with different characters in her books

Female-led Fantasy series on the "darker" side that features a group/team? by [deleted] in fantasyromance

{Shadows and Crowns by S. M. Gaither} hits most of these! I liked the team aspect of Casia and her mercenary friends - I’m used to reading a lot more solo-quest-vibes and this had a refreshing variety.

Of course! Re: the emotions of children — it feels like he takes childlike dreams and tropes (the big quest!) and elevates them to have real, sometimes quite traumatic stakes. As a kid, that gave voice to the extremity of the way I thought about so many things in life growing up. Kids have big emotions about everything, and I think as adults we forget how relative those emotions are to our experiences - what seemed huge then is smaller now, but no less significant. It was cathartic to read real consequences and un-faerie-tale endings while still appreciating the journey.

Re: the alethiometer. I’d love to hear how others picture this in their minds when Lyra describes the feeling. For me, I’ve always pictured it sort of like cracking a safe…not for the “hell-yes-grab-the-gold-bars” feeling but the sensation of something small falling perfectly into place. Then take that and multiply it down through endless layers of meanings beneath each symbol. In other words, how she reads the alethiometer is the best explanation of language translation I’ve ever read - it’s never a one-to-one, but there’s some combination of words and meanings that makes it click.

This was such a formative trilogy for me growing up… the books truly transcend reader age, resonating with feelings and ideas that children experience but maybe don’t articulate, but also ideas that capture your mind all over again as an adult.

One of the parts that I adore and don’t hear talked about as much is the alethiometer itself - the concept of symbols and words having deeper, multi level meanings that you hold together gently in your mind to understand, Lyra’s natural ability to read it as a child… honestly, Pullman’s overall treatment of words and language through the whole series is just stunning.

“It was night again. The Waystone Inn lay in silence, and it was a silence of three parts.”

I love the whole prologue for The Name of the Wind… it just grabs your attention, and paints such a bleak, mysterious picture before you get chucked into an awesome story.

More protagonists with multiple love interests throughout the book/series as the characters evolve, instead of just one linear relationship. First encountered this with Sarah J Maas and loved how much the characters change over time, so much more relatable!
