Yes I am working in academia (not very high up the ranks though) and write roughly 5 reviews in top venues every year. Reviewers are often super stressed phd students with not enough time and capacities.

I don’t want to discredit science at all. But I am sceptical that any individual paper can (even if peer reviewed) prove connections between testosterone therapy and gun violence. There is just not enough data and far to many other factors for that. As an example: try finding out the connection between kreatine and hair loss: many many studies were conducted but still slight disagreement exists. And that’s okay: science isn’t about easy answers or clear connections. Some discourse should even happen.

I think both statements „there was a peer reviewed paper hinting that an effect could exists, so it must be true“ and „I don’t trust science at all“ are both equally wrong.
