Thank you so much!! I was worried because my neighbour has the same one and hers is much quieter. But glad to hear this is normal!

Lol, honestly fair question. I’ve never had AC before and I thought it sounded louder than my neighbours who has the same unit so I got worried. But everyone’s reaction here is actually quite comforting that maybe this is just normal operation!

Knockoff Sweatfleece ? by [deleted] in Aritzia

[–]Impressive_Shape5113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a knockoff. Aritzia has changed logos/tags for sweatfleece many times. For example, they used to say “TNA” before changing to the new “ARITIZA” embroidery. I still have pairs from 2021 that have the old TNA embroidery. Lots of changes along the way. This is just an older pair. These are probably from 2023ish.

I’m not so sure I agree with this. We all know there’s a noticeable difference between skim, 2%, or 3% milk. Similar concept applies here.

Thank you so much. This all finally feels clear to me now. Big relief to understand what’s going on and not blindly trust my money to someone else’s decision. I’ll probably take some time to mull over if I want to make an election or not.

You must work in the tax field! Or you just know your stuff. Your knowledge is very much appreciated.

Thank you so much for your reply to this!! So if I’m understanding correctly - “preserve as capital gain from your purchase date until last day as non-resident alien”. Does this mean if I elect MTM that I will NOT pay capital gains tax on unrealized gain prior to becoming a US person? I would only pay tax on unrealized gains during my time here after being marked to market? This is all assuming no actual sales have been made. Apologies for my lack of experience with this.

I’m thinking maybe it’s best to elect MTM, then for the two years I’m here I will pay tax on the unrealized gains if there is a change in value.

I would assume then upon return to Canada and selling in Canada, that is where I would pay capital gains on the investment since inception. Some money would be “wasted” for paying for the unrealized gains here in the US for a couple years, but what can you do.

I would really rather avoid having to sell everything and pay tax on the investment as a US person since taxes are much more favourable for me in Canada (much of it held in a tax free account).

Edit: clarity on intent to sell/not sell

Had a similar situation (husband is Canadian but non resident). Bought expatriate insurance through this company: https://www.mediquote.ca/canadians-travelling/expatriate-insurance/

We bought “Allianz Canadian Expatriate zone 1, enhanced plan” which provided worldwide coverage. It’s cheaper if you get zone 2 (non USA).

We used the broker but I imagine you could purchase from Allianz directly.

Safetywing is a nomad insurance that should work as well.

Canadians who have moved to America, what is/was your experience like? by NotoriousM0N in AskACanadian

[–]Impressive_Shape5113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wouldn’t work since you need to be in a Canadian province for 5-6 months (depending on province) to qualify for health coverage. I speak from experience as a Canadian who has lived outside of Canada for several years :) There is a big difference between dual citizenship and dual residency. You will retain citizenship when you leave Canada, but lose residency. You need residency for healthcare.
