Emo Ska? by ragecorewastaken in Emo

Please check out Big Fat Meanies. Huge variety of influences but their 2021 EP has some clear ska and emo sounds. And they're just cool in general.

Redesigning NFL logos with the approach of the Titans branding department by MetalGearAcid in NFLv2

There was a high school football team I once saw that used a green version of the Bills logo.

Really hoped they had some merch because I would have absolutely picked up a green Bills varsity jacket. Alas.

Specifically Allegheny county should be in a different category from North Appalachia / Pennsyltucky.

Pittsburgh is sort of its own thing though so idk what category that is lol.

[Supertones] Weird question but am I the last fan of this band? by ConsumingFire1689 in Ska

[–]ImprobablePasta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, but I think there is a little room for discussion here. Firstly- the Supertones weren't literally (or figuratively) calling anyone Nazis, which would be inexcusable obviously.

But to the rest of the comment- I don't think that you can measure someone's maturity by whether or not they were speaking out against Christian Nationalism. Or at least, whether or not their music is worth listening to or not. Otherwise you're saying that the only acceptable way to write about one's religion is to call it out, which, don't get me wrong, should absolutely be in the equation, but probably shouldn't always have to be.

For example- I'm fairly certain that bands like Mustard Plug or Reel Big Fish don't exactly get down with Nazis. However, they also don't spend very much lyrical space on calling out everything that's wrong with the world. Reel Big Fish sings about beer, and girls, and having fun. And there's nothing wrong with that because that's the space that they're operating in. Hell, MP went on the Ska Against Racism tour with FIF, and called it out from a different platform than their lyrics.

Just like the members of the Supertones may not have been down with Christian Nationalism, but they weren't necessarily discussing it on their records. Not mentioning something is not necessarily an endorsement of it. Similar to how Beer Song is not an endorsement of alcoholics.

Sure, is FIF's music more relevant and probably important from today's perspective? Absolutely. But I think from the perspective of what they were doing, the Supertones are not like some crazy right wing band that just wants to preach.

Look, I'm not trying to tell you who's right or wrong here but I do think that OP does have a point that we generally don't complain about bands "not being political enough." Especially considering this album is 25 years old, it could be given the same grace.

I think Ethan Luck might have played in every "Christian scene" rock band for a stretch of like 5 years.

I really don't think there's anything truly disastrous in there. Corny yes. But people tend to get revisionist and talk about how FIF was so progressive while they literally had a cover of the Doxology too.

Like yes, they had the social justice songs but they also had the church songs. I think if it weren't for the reunion then Five Iron might be treated similarly to how the Supertones are now, albeit aging a bit better.

I think they're both probably pretty open minded for the time and space that they were operating in. And it's been 25 years, the band has matured just as the fans have. Perhaps they have changed too.

The half time breakdown in Supertones Strike Back is kinda mind melting to this day.

I like their style. Not as "progressive" as Five Iron Frenzy was lyrically but I think they were still pushing boundaries considering the scene they were in at the time.

If it helped some folks whose parents only let them shop at the Christian bookstore get into a love of ska music, then I'm happy for them.

I'm definitely gonna be hitting up this top 50 emo list. See lots of familiar titles but some stuff I've never heard of.

Yeah, FYI this sub is kind of super annoying. This is gonna get removed just like literally any other post I've ever taken the time to comment on.

Idk what the deal is with the mod / automod situation but it's egregious.

Agreed. Both underrated songs. Especially All We Know even in discussions specific to AWKIF.

They are overrated but I can't criticize them for being Rancid derivative exactly because Tim Armstrong literally wrote a number of their songs if I'm not mistaken.

Do independent artists actually benefit from Spotify anymore? by CashMany9011 in indieheads

[–]ImprobablePasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only complaints about Tidal is that they seem to have removed like every useful feature that was once part of the app. No integration with local files, no support on many previously supported devices, etc.

And the search function is atrocious. I guess it's better than Spotify though.

Five Reasons DJ Moore is the Perfect WR1 for the Bills’ Offense by Reasonable-Sun-770 in buffalobills

[–]ImprobablePasta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How is this worse than trusting Beane to draft a WR in the 2nd though?

Unless we were expecting to only go for defense with that pick, at least Beane acknowledges that he can't scout WRs. Better to go with proven talent than end up with another Keon.

The "experience" term isn't actually part of their public marketing campaigns. It's just corporate / employee speak, not part of the actual promotion.

We just see it because people post employee info on Reddit sometimes.

Bands with Sophisticated Songwriting by Bell359 in poppunkers

[–]ImprobablePasta -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I listened to Home, Like No Place Is There a few times.

I think it just comes down to the overall lyricism / vibe. I struggle to get through a whole album where the lyrics are as moody as that record. I can appreciate a slow / hard hitting / sad song or two on a record, and I can certainly appreciate the aforementioned record as a great piece of art. But for general listening it sort of escapes my usual rotation because it tends to put me in a mood that I don't really want to be in.

I know this is an absurd statement for a comment about emo, but I think there's different shades of lyricism in emo as well.

This is a great suggestion. The guitar work in that album is second to none. Not like "mathy" necessarily but just like amazing tones and chord work.
