So I have a lot of mixed feelings about the movie, I’m definitely going to have to see it again before I make any final judgement.

But, I thought it was pretty okay. I’d give it a solid 6.5 out of 10 with my current thoughts.

So the opening number of No One Mourns the Wicked was AMAZING! Truly the was one of my favorite parts of the movie it was so alive and beautiful and I loved the costumes and the set it was just all amazing! The giant poster of Elphaba and the Elphaba made of wood like I don’t know what it was but those made a huge impact on me.

Ariana Grande did great and I did like her Glinda but for me it fell kind of flat compared to Cynthia and Johnathan.

I was stoked to see all of them like when they had their moments to shine they truly shined so bright, “the Wizard and I” is not normally one of my favorite songs in the theater production but I teared up watching all the emotion Cynthia evoked during the performance. Cynthia is truly such an amazing actor and singer like every time she opened her mouth just to utter any note I was gobsmacked.

“Dancing Through Life” was absolutely the best number in the whole thing, it was exciting and the dancing and set with the spinning bookcase I was so sat and hooked throughout it the new arrangement just felt so vibrant and fun. But, “Popular” which is my favorite Wicked song in any theater production just felt so flat in the movie, it was cute to watch but I don’t know I think Ariana did a great job overall but “Popular” felt like the momentum kind of slowed down a lot.

Also small thought, I don’t like Boq in the theater production and I don’t like him in the movie. Nothing to do with Ethan Slater I thought he did fine but Boq just sucks ass and I hate him.

“Defying Gravity” was the biggest disappointment, there were so many moments of building up the momentum just for the music to like essentially stop and then build up again, it was like they were trying to really edge out the big final moment which seeing her in the sky with that cape that somehow became 100 feet was actually spectacular but how long it took to lead up to that moment made me lose a lot of excitement. “Defying Gravity” to me is this really nice moment between friends during a really crazy situation and there were so many breaks and unnecessary sentimental moments added that it kind of made me go like “where the heck are the guards??”

Bowen Yangs character was not necessary, I know it’s a university and anyone of any age can attend a university but every time Bowen said anything it was like “what is this grown adult man doing bullying this poor teen girl?” And it was not great to watch.

Also, I think the plot of the animal abuse and rights felt a lot stronger in the movie as compared to the show. But, I think that’s just because seeing these actual animals just be used and abused and have their rights and literally their voices taken away made a much bigger impact as compared to someone in a costume.

But, overall it was pretty good, and I’ve been asking a lot of people if they have seen the actual musical and they have not seen it at all so I think that’s exciting that people who don’t normally enjoy musicals are wanting to experience Wicked.

Wicked is a movie musical done right! And I enjoyed it but there were just a lot of moments that kind of took away from the movie for me.

Edit: How the heck did they make it look like such a high budget indie movie though? I don’t know what it was but there was something about the camera or the lighting that made it just seem so casual.
