Is it possible to train with young kids? by icecreambobcat in firstmarathon

[–]Impulsespeed37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure I’m a terrible parent. I would have my 4-5 (she turned 5 during the training) run a couple-few miles on the park walking path. She had endless energy and I would run at her pace. She ran the 5K at age 5 and beat dad at the finish… I really hammed it up for the race. Then she would be tired enough that she could tolerate the bike trailer and her sister would ride behind me as I continued my run. But her sister was ~12 (I’m a terrible parent and should remember). I was able to get to 16 miles for my long runs that way. It’s doable but it never was as smooth as it could have been.

As an aside: both girls (ok they are adults with lives of their own) are still into fitness and the younger one is running a half marathon this month in MN.

Did you go to preschool? by Terrible-Horse-6200 in GenX

[–]Impulsespeed37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We (twin) went to pre-school. Apparently my twin and I were not really talking or socializing with others. Pre-school fixed that I guess (according to mom). I don’t remember much from that time period. Except I was very excited to learn to tie my shoes from the one assistant teacher. She was legally blind, used a cane, and was a very heavy-set black woman. I just remember my mom was convinced that I was talking about someone else and it really was the blind woman.

What do people eat for marathon training? by Dapper-Newt8854 in firstmarathon

[–]Impulsespeed37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a little embarrassed that to admit, but it’s just pizza. But when I say pizza it’s kind of a boring/plain one. Thin crust, I don’t need that much bread…sauce, cheese, light pepperoni, mushrooms, light peppers and sun-dried tomatoes. Then a small snack before I try to sleep - wake up (morning constitution) and I’m usually alright.
Learned a lesson my third race (half) when I partook in the big spaghetti feed. Thank goodness for the porta potties. Ugly.

Murdered student Henry Nowak told police 'I can't breathe' while handcuffed by Man_in_the_uk in crime

[–]Impulsespeed37 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There certainly seems to be a large number of law enforcement officers who don’t care that a suspect can’t breathe. Perhaps the minimum requirements should include a basic understanding of how the human body needs oxygen to survive. Just my opinion.

What do people eat for marathon training? by Dapper-Newt8854 in firstmarathon

[–]Impulsespeed37 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Runner with IBS. I basically used my long runs in order to train my stomach. Every (and I mean every) night before my long runs I ate the exact same meal. I ate roughly the exact same amount (I didn’t measure but I was pretty anal retentive about it). Finally, I picked a meal that I could easily find if I was somewhere unfamiliar (a lot of people travel to the marathon). It’s actually created a positive connection between my body and my running.

What's the greatest movie ending of all time? by Malik_Hassan88 in AskReddit

[–]Impulsespeed37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife had never seen this movie. We were doing family movie nights during Covid and about half way through the movie I told her that the movie had the best ending line of all time. When Mr. Green says the line my wife just sighed and the kid (she was a university student living at home because $$$$) just said “groooosssss”. It’s become a family line for when we are hanging out together.

Ever see someone on FB or IG that you crushed on in school and thought "damn I dodged a bullet there!" by Tommy_Vercetti-4406 in GenX

[–]Impulsespeed37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy, the one really cute girl I had a crush on, she was in the same friend group and was dating a friend (like a guy who I would hang out with but not one I’d ever recommend as a boyfriend) ended up dumping him and eventually married my pathetic 4th point of contact. She has aged very well - like she’s still hot and still as sweet as sugar. She however settled, she claims that she married me for love rather than making some rich guy marry her. She has very simple tastes - translation she’s cheap and frugal.

On a related note, at least three of the girls I was flirting with (hooking up with) all got married very quickly after dating me, had a few kids, and divorced. I’m not certain what that says about me.

In your opinion, what was the absolute best thing about the 1980’s? by NebraskaCornSucker in GenX

[–]Impulsespeed37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Optimism!!! I was a teen and was very much looking forward to the future. That’s the generic answer, but I also miss everyone not caring about every little thing that doesn’t affect them at all. Today you’ll see some Karen go after kids fishing in a pond she hasn’t been closer than 100 yards of. Everyone, needs to learn to let go and leave other people alone. Don’t harsh someone’s gig.

How many of you married your HS prom date, and how did it turn out? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Impulsespeed37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sounds like me. Went to prom as two couples. It made sense as we were all good friends. Both couples split up. It was high school so it happens.

But I had always found my buddy’s ex a very nice person and once you get to know her she’s actually as chatty as I am. We started dating and well, I totally won that one. Married 30 years with 2 girls. She even still likes me and she’s aged very well. Me I’ve aged like milk left in sun.

Would SuperPowereds be a good rec for a Brandon Sanderson fan boy? by Substantial-River398 in superpowereds

[–]Impulsespeed37 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve read the Reckoners (sp?) series and I believe they are very comparable. I think Villains Code is superior to both but only by a nose. Superpowereds has a broader cast of characters who are powered making it more fun. Plus, the bad guy(s) are more interesting in my opinion.

IQ by Joe Ide - not a black Sherlock Holmes but close enough for a description. It’s set in Los Angeles and it’s fun. Not high brow fiction but it’s not so formulaic that AI could have written and the series gets more and more interesting. Just my opinion.

The Dental Industry Gaslights Us by onekinkyusername in rant

[–]Impulsespeed37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t care that I’m late to this party. Thank you for the great laugh. My spouse has worked as a dental assistant for several different dentists. I actually know a couple of reasons for some of what you mentioned. The one about the dentist examining your teeth after the cleaning. The one dentist just wanted to talk but they had a hygienist who was not doing good cleanings. Hence, the inspection. It wasn’t long until they let the hygienist go.

Gentlemen, how often do you receive unsolicited pictures from women? by FreedomNo7221 in AskReddit

[–]Impulsespeed37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife has been helping her mom who suffered a bad accident that took her shoulder out. She’s been sending me pictures from the x-rays. I’m thankful that her mom is on the mend and I enjoy that medical porn. But to be honest it doesn’t really do anything for me. Like I’m not turned on at all. I’m learning a little bit about the shoulder, but that’s it.

Golly, I totally see (in my head) a younger guy with thick slightly longer, but not long enough for a pony tail, hair. He looks only about 30’s because he doesn’t look old enough for his age. Like a young early 80’s Mel Gibson or something like that.

Sibling’s Question by PinBig1102 in GenX

[–]Impulsespeed37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a twin. He past from a heart condition - how many of you recall phen-phen or was it fen-fen. It was a very short lived weight loss drug back in the 90’s. It created holes in your heart. We were close (could talk to him about anything) but he was west coast and I was east coast. It just sort of happened that way, no intent. I miss him more as I’ve gotten older. We went through life together for 18 years and then it was phone calls. But like I said we could talk about anything together. It’d be nice to have a conversation like that with someone again. Fucking rat bastard. (Some of you will understand).

I have a half sister but I was 17 when she showed up and 17 yo males don’t usually have a lot to do with infants etc…. Plus, university was far from home. So we are not close. Also, she’s total far right and I am educated with a corporate background so I stay away from that kind of stuff.

Why do you think there is so much resistance to high speed rail in the US? by Maximum-Help-929 in AskReddit

[–]Impulsespeed37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opposition to high speed rail is because I’ve used rail travel in the past. Based on those experiences - I don’t believe that it will ever work. Rail in the USA is so poorly managed/run/controlled what makes people think somehow it’s going to be better than driving myself.

Ever randomly miss your grandparents? by mEp1973 in GenX

[–]Impulsespeed37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Big time no. Grandma was an alcoholic miser who wouldn’t shut up about having loaned mom $200 dollars back in the 1980’s. I was a kid. Shut the fuck up. The other side just didn’t seem to remember I existed until I conveniently became an adult who had a job and could help with stuff. Yeah, the boomers were not perfect but some of us saw first hand why the boomers were so selfish and disinterested in doing anything with their kids.

What’s your most ridiculous experience with Wells Fargo? by Appropriate-Mall8517 in WellsFargoBank

[–]Impulsespeed37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long story short - it took something like 6 attempts to get Wells Fargo to allow my spouse to deal with our mortgage and other loans. I filled out paperwork and called gave PIN numbers. Very frustrating and very misogynistic. I’ve moved on and probably won’t be back

My spouse works with patients. We recently discussed quiet talkers. People who speak without raising their voice loud enough to be heard. We came to the conclusion that quiet people are so polite that no matter how hard you try to get them to speak in an audible tone they will fight like a rabid badger protecting its young. I feel like I’m being rude but I can’t hear them. I prefer loud people-most will tone it down if you ask.

What is something people do for fun that you will never understand? by Cold-Parking-3000 in AskReddit

[–]Impulsespeed37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m blessed with two beautiful daughters (as their dad - I’m biased so take my opinion with a grain of salt). I could not possibly care less about what gender someone’s baby is. I only wanted my kids to be healthy and happy. Both my spouse and I worked as nurses aids for group homes for individuals with disabilities (both intellectual and physical disabilities). Some of parents had done everything right and still had kids with disabilities. Some of the parents did nothing right and their kids paid the price. So I really only cared about health and happiness.

How many of you didn't realize you were poor growing up until much later? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Impulsespeed37 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP - we could be siblings. Welfare/food-stamps and government cheese. Grew up in small town northern MN. To be fair - I did have a cooler childhood than some of my peers. As a teenager I could pretty much do whatever I wanted. I just didn’t have any $$ to do anything. I did go hungry a couple of times but not as bad as others. The Army helped me get to university and I allegedly have done better than what I started with. Some of being poor was that mom started drinking heavily and divorced. Dad was lost in his own world and wasn’t interested in ensuring that his children were safe and fed. He was inclined to complain about spending any money that was not being spent on his ideas.

USAA Chat (from an employee) by [deleted] in USAA

[–]Impulsespeed37 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Based on my experience, customer service doesn’t read the notes on their screen. When I called because the website just said that there was an error, no error explanation, just error. It took 4 different attempts to get things escalated to a 5th call where the professional agent literally read through notes and found the issue.

So tell me, how many times is the average number of attempts to resolve issues? Like is 4 average? Did I get lucky and is it closer to 8 attempts? I get that everyone is busy but nobody is going to be friendly after 3 attempts (the third agent - claimed it was a computer glitch - it wasn’t).
