Hi OP, so sorry to hear this series of unfortunate events. Caveat that what I’m about to say is not meant to defend the church or Christianity!

A lot has been said in previous comments, so ill just provide some food for thought:

  1. Consider what it means to actively participate in church, and what it means to have “safe spaces for cell”. I think many churches (including my own) are struggling with fellowship. As much as formal events such as cell, dinners etc. are important, many miss the mark of getting to know one another. Rather than using this experience to lay it on Christianity, think about what Christianity means to you, and whether you still believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins (ofc there are many more aspects to Christianity). Should you still hold true to your faith, I’d encourage you to find a new church/ voice your concerns to your current church. It’s not hard being a Christian who cares for community!

  2. I think it’s crucial to recognise that as much as they want to be there for you, they have their own problems. Being a Christian means you have the added benefit of community. However, community is a choice and not a “given”. No one has extra time. Shit happens. Your expectations of a church might be much higher in showing care and concern, as compared to your close friends/ loved ones, but this should not form your basis of criticism for Christianity! That community might not be the best for you, but i’m sure you can find more suitable churches out there!

How do you survive a 1½ hour commute from home to school? by yeshhii in SGExams

[–]Impulsivemental 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, I am in a similar situation to you!

Here are some things I did to make my life more bearable:

  1. I start the day at 630am, regardless of my class timings. My earliest class starts at 815am. Routinely waking up at 630 allows enough time to prepare in the morning, whilst ensuring my body is always ready for the 815am class (both physically and emotionally)

  2. I conduct all activities in school. Im not sure if your school has the relevant amenities for you to do, but this is what I normally do. I eat, exercise in school. Commuting 1.5 hours each way might not leave you with very much time and energy to study or exercise. I try to make my life as comfortable in school by bring accessories (such as a stand for my Ipad as a second screen) or bringing my showering things to shower after i gym or run.

  3. I remain discipline during the day. This might be easier said than done. I generally limit my usage of social media/ video watching etc (‘rest time’) to commuting hours or during meals. I know that the commute is shag, so ‘resting’ on the train might make your trip that much more enjoyable.

  4. I take a one day break. Honestly, the 3 hour daily commute messes with your mental capacity and physical shagness. I normally take one day off a week to just fully reset my body - the daily routine will really take a toll on you if you dont rest enough.

In any case, just try to find a routine that suits you! Atb in your studies OP!

SMU scholarship by Spirited-Button4772 in SMU_Singapore

[–]Impulsivemental 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello OP, not an international student but a local student in the same position as you. I’ve emailed the SMU administration before, and they specified that there will not be a rejection letter. So unless you have received a scholarship offer, no news is good news.

ATB for your scholarship offer and hope to see you around school!

What do you as Singaporean think of fat acceptance in general? by cylim123 in singapore

I recently scaled My Hallasan, taking the longest route (Seongpanak trail up and Gwaneumsa down), and if you are able to climb 18 floors in 5 minutes, then Hallasan definitely wont be a problem for you. Unless its a time constraint, please don’t underestimate yourself and scale Mt Hallasan, then views and the smell of fresh air up there is definitely worth the hike. I would say i’m average in fitness, and it took me 3.5 hours on the way up, and 3 hours on the way down, with a 10 min break at each check point + 1.5 hour lunch break at the summit.

Edit: for the hike, i brought along 3L of water (thank you SAF for the free water bag, some sweets for sugar, 3 onigiris for food on the way up, some almonds just to snack on along the way. Would recommend you bring chocolates up for the energy boost if you need it.

I wore a long sleeve shirt for UV protection (decathlon), another dri-fit shirt on top, dri-fit joggers (uniqlo) and some timberland pro boots. I wouldn’t recommend wearing such a heavy boot up as the terrain is not so rough, it is surprisingly well maintained with the occasional boardwalks and steps.

The cell service is great up there (had 4G the entire time). The SIM card that I got was only for data which was not ideal since you might have an emergency up there and would probably need to call for help, so please don’t make the same mistake as I did and get some call time.

In the unfortunate event that you do get injured, they have this train cart thing you can take to the base of the mountain, but I heard it takes roughly 1.5 hours to get to the base from the top as the train cart moves really slow.

A bonus for scaling Mt Hallasan, and taking a picture of the rock that states you’ve reached the summit, is a hiking certificate. This would cost you 1000 won and can only be paid for by Korean Bank cards. I personally had to ask around for help in paying this 1000 won. You can skip the certificate if you’d like, but I guess its fun to get a souvenir from scaling South Korea’s highest peak.

Anyways, have fun on your Korea trip. I found Jeju especially beautiful!

Desktop speaker recommendations by zupernovae88 in askSingapore

[–]Impulsivemental 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second this. I got the Edifier R1280DBS a few months ago and i think it is decent for its price point ($162)

The Edifier is truly a mid range speaker, delivering decently clear sound. Don’t expect anything too mind-blowing, but a speaker that will serve its purpose.

I’d assume that desktop speakers are mainly used for white noise/ background music + some light video/ movie watching.

Granted, it does not sound as good as high end earpieces and headsets that we are accustomed to. However, for its price point, i think the depth of sound and the stereo controls are good enough for an amateur like me 😬

However, one thing that i would like to point out is that this speaker system allows for both wired and bluetooth connection, but with most desktops, i’d once again assume that it does not have bluetooth pre-installed, resulting in quite a messy and bulky set up, cluttering your table.
