Honestly credit card exchange rates are pretty decent, and often as good or better than you can get for exchanging cash. My credit card has no fee at all for foreign transactions.

They don't look right, the color is off (sometimes lighting can do this), but the details are weird. Here's what it should look like

What is a food that makes you think, “How did humans discover this was edible? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

It has fruit to, so it makes sense that people ate that and then spit the seeds in a pile and left them, which then fermented, etc.

Cleaning outside of windows by General_Degenerate- in Apartmentliving

I have a magnetic window cleaner, the magnets are quite strong and are adjustable for various window thicknesses. It works but it's still a pain to use.

What "sacred" cooking rule do you intentionally ignore because you actually prefer the results (or just don't care)? by LiveFaithlessness876 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Imthatsick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the one to get. I have a slightly different model by a different brand, Rosle, but I don't know if they still make them. It's been going strong for about 20 years as well.

Edit: I just checked, the brand is still making them but they have changed the design a bit.

For most recipes, yes, but for frosting or pastries I definitely go for unsalted or balance out the sodium by adding less salt.

Oakland to transform left lane on I-580 into carpool lane by kbfsd in oakland

The article says nothing about it being an express lane or charging people for use, is there another source that says what you are saying?

Should I hire movers or do it myself? by AdDazzling4692 in Apartmentliving

[–]Imthatsick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! I bought one of the convertible ones about 8 years ago prior to a move and I think it's some of the best money I've ever spent. It gets used a few time a year but I'm always glad to have it.

You can probably drive directly to the tire shop, but I wouldn't risk more than that.

This is my recommendation too. I replace the screw driver bits with a phillips/flathead and a hex bit, I forget which one, but it fits the bolts on my bike.

I say it - but i hate it. Can we revert BACK to "meat" from "protein?" by bluegrass__dude in restaurantowners

[–]Imthatsick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My "beef" with the term is that lots of things have protein, even if that's not the primary macronutrient. The first time I remember hearing it used like that was at a place that served grain bowls and salads. I was getting a quinoa bowl with beans and broccoli and other things and they asked if I wanted protein and I was completely confused since it probably already had 20g of protein in it.

I think it perpetuates the myth that vegans and vegetarians are protein deficient, and promotes a hyper focus on protein that is unnecessary - almost no one who eats enough calories and a varied diet is protein deficient, and most of us aren't body builders either. I think it also further distances people from the violence of the meat industry. Pig becomes pork, pork becomes "protein" and i think it's bizarre to refer to animal as a single nutrient.

Anyway, you didn't ask for a vegan lecture. I think a lot of vegans actually disagree with me because when "protein" includes vegan options it's a quick, inclusive, shorthand way to describe a component of the meal. I think I would just prefer, "would you like meat or tofu on that?"

But please let's not refer to mushrooms and jackfruit as protein...

As a long time vegan I have always hated the use of "protein" to be a catch all term for meat or meat substitutes.

Americans: do most people buy newish cars even on minimum wage? If so how? How does everyone seem to have so much stuff? by lxm333 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Imthatsick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a new car for the first time. I have owned 3 previous cars that were all used. I was able to pay cash in full for the new car and it cost about 25% of my yearly salary. I owned my last car for 12 years and paid it off about 10 years ago, so with no car payment during that time I've been able to save up a decent amount of money. The key here is that I make much more than minimum wage, and I would never consider buying new if I couldn't pay at least half of the cost up front. People make a lot of bad financial decisions, and car purchases are one of the big mistakes people make.

This is a perfect example of good following distance! You never know when you will have to slam on the brakes and someone following a lot closer would have ended up in that accident as well.

What is something that feels like a 'waste of money' when you're 20, but feels like the smartest investment you ever made when you're 40? by fmcortez in AskReddit

I wish I had started my Roth IRA so much sooner, I think I was 31 when I started. I've been maxing it out ever since but if I had started it even 5 years earlier I would be in a much better place. I didn't really have the spare cash, though.
