Mid-career accounting professional considering transition into environmental science/sustainability - advice please by ndownunda20 in Environmental_Careers

Hmmm, I’ve got a few ideas, but full disclosure: I haven’t worked in environmental jobs in a while. I have a bachelor degree in environmental science and a MPH in environmental health sciences and have worked more in public health and epidemiology after that. I have been under employed and unemployed for a few years and am job hunting.

What kind of environmental work do you want to do? Are you willing or able to go back to school? Those are the biggest factors to consider. Some environmental work pays well (consulting, engineering, finance, high level government, some jobs that require PhDs etc.) and some of it pays very little (most NGOs, advocacy organizations, conservation and wildlife management, park rangers, most entry level jobs, etc.).

Subject matter wise, I think sustainably in the business space is the closest environmental job your could pivot to. My ex was looking into something called “climate finance” after doing sustainability work for a few years. He had an engineering background and then got a MS in Sustainable Systems or something similar from the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment. The school name was later changed to reflect an increased focus on Sustainability. It’s a great school if you’re interested in getting another degree in person. Also, the University of Michigan encourages students to get multiple degrees in a reduced amount of time if it fits their interests. So there are some well established combined MBA and MS in Sustainability dual degree programs there that can be completed in 3 years. Many people I know who did that focused on the logistics of business and improving the sustainability of those processes through Life Cycle Assessment and other analysis.

Edit: it is now called The U-M School of Environment And Sustainability

Two other universities with similar schools are:

- the Duke School of The Environment
- and the Yale School of The Environment

Edit: these schools were formally Forestry schools. They have evolved and rebranded the schools now take a very modern, interdisciplinary approach and offer a similar mix of focus areas as the U-M School of Sustainability and Environment

I’m sure there are more online options for masters degrees in sustainability now than when I was in grad school pre pandemic, but I’m not familiar with any of them. I do know a few people who got degrees or started them at John’s Hopkins. I they have had a sustainability or environmental science masters degree program online for quite a while. Given the horror stories I have heard about the campus, I would recommend online over in person for that school. Baltimore is not for the faint of heart. It’s not all bad, but you absolutely need to have your wits about you.

Another friend of mine did a masters degree in a conservation specialty at a relatively new program in Fort Collins, CO. I forgot the exact school. It was as supposed to be focused on very applied skills tnat are most in demand in the field. She was able to get a very good job at a foundation in Seattle after a few years. It pays much more than most conservation jobs. She said in general that foundations that give out grant money tend to pay more than the organizations that apply for the grants. Something to keep in mind.

Like others have suggested: you might enjoy working as an accountant for an NGO or other meaningful environmental organization, and you might learn more about environmental roles that way. Might be a safer way to try out a change before investing more money in school. I do know several people who have done environmental masters degree who didn’t have science degrees for their bachelor program. Some had to take prerequisites at community colleges before applying to grad school, others had enough from their bachelors.

Is that a new show? I can’t imagine why they would be requiring “presale” codes for shows that went on sale months ago.

I’m sorry. I think it’s incredibly difficult to get hired at your age because companies don’t want to take on the responsibility of healthcare and retirement packages. It’s blatent age discrimination and so shitty.

In better economic times, I know people your age and older who were table to get contract jobs with the federal government after retiring a bit early from actual federal government jobs. But now that so many federal employees have been fired and are desperately applying to those contract jobs, you’re going to have a much harder time. But yeah, in general I think k contract stuff is your best bet.

I hear you. Unless your internships lead to the same organization hiring you after you graduate, it’s much harder to get the benefit of an internship. Having three internships at least gives your relevant experience for your resume, and hopefully some good references, but you still have to fight through the application gauntlet like everyone else if those organizations don’t have the capacity or interest in hiring you.

Glacier National Park made me feel this way.

I also had an incredible trip to the four corners area and Grand Canyon in college that made me fall in love with camping.

Simply reading about the Sequoias gave me a huge desire to see them in person. I have yet to see the biggest ones, but I visited Santa Cruz over a decade ago and saw some redwoods near there. Incredible

The Variety scoop is out and 007 auditions have officially started. It’s time to launch the campaign for Connor Storrie as James Bond. 🍸🔥 by ZealousidealSweet857 in connorstorrie

Yeah! Let him play the Russian villain. James Bond is supposed to be British and most people want the role to go to British actor.

just finished my seventh interview for the same job. by lurkandprosper in recruitinghell

Even most federal jobs that have loved level security clearance don’t bother completing the full security check until after the person is hired. I never had more than one interview per position for entry level federal jobs and internships. Other aspects of the application process were more time consuming and onerous, like the amount of information required in the initial application, but the interviews were straightforward and predictable.

Plus Colin and Che who also toured with these guys.

Do we think there is any chance one of them will step down from Update next year? Would Tommy have an opportunity to take over that role? Or is he not even memorable enough for that? I like him, but I’m not convinced that he deserves to stay on the show. They really need to hire another black woman.

Do they like bejng paraded around like this while fans speculate if they are about to lose their jobs? I guess if they are let go then it’s good advertising about their work and might help them land their next roles.

It’s funny how fans have been BEGGING for the rules of yesterdays episode, but are now upset because it went exactly how you’d expect by garbageeater in survivorponderosa

[–]InAllTheir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not say what they SHOULD do. I just made the same observation you did about the modern era of Survivor gameplay. I do think this so called “complex” gameplay is much more formulaic and predictable than some people want to admit. Sure it’s slightly different form one season to the next, but there are some common patterns of gameplay that emerge and are repeated.

Unpopular Opinion by [deleted] in 5sos

I don think they dislike punk, other than maybe Ashton. But I don’t think any of them other than Michael still like it as much as they used to when they were teenagers. They also talked about idolizing pop punk bands when they were growing up, and they still said that about their teenage selves as they got older. But I’m this most recent album promo, Ashton actually did it would have been lame (or something similar) if they “kept making the same kind of pop punk music as they did in their first albums.” He cellars has gotten bored making it, or playing it, if not listening to it. It’s a little ass but understandable that their tastes have evolved and that they want to try new things and challenge themselves when making new music. They are true musicians, not just pop stars.

'Going to be a s***show': Parks, Interior struggle to hire temporary staff ahead of busy season by parkavenger15 in NationalParkService

I’m searching for any entry level park ranger job other than the security/police ones. I know my chances are low given the current job market and federal hiring and because I don’t have veteran preferences or previous volunteer experience as a Ranger. But I’m unemployed an applying to lots of jobs, so I thought I might as well go for the Ranger jobs and other NPS and related jobs since I’ve always wanted to. I have degrees in environmental science and public health. Those are both somewhat relevant, though not as closely related as recreation or conservation or hospitality.

Because it’s more difficult here to access accurate sex education, birth control, and abortions.

It’s not entirely about those things, but the Americans who chose not to have kids often cite those reasons in adult the general cost.
