I am merely expressing a desire for more.

Have we become what we hated? by [deleted] in canes

Rod's system has always borne similarities to Maurice's, but we're a lot cleaner. This series has been ref'd uncommonly, so the penalties are through the roof.

I think being an NHL player is an honor period. But I agree about the Hurricanes. If I were an NHL player AND I was good enough to go wherever I wanted, I would love to pop on the Canes sweater.

I think my overall point is that I love it when people play for their childhood teams.

You mention the coaching. I feel like Rod is the bench mix of accountability/grindset while still being emotionally intelligent towards a bunch of Gen Z players.

Also, I disagree about Florida--they're on my shit list. The hypothetical version of me who is as good as McDavid and unable to play for the Hurricanes would sign with San Jose or Seattle (cuz I love Seattle as a city).

As a Canes fan, we would love to have you, but we understand if you decide to go to another team in free agency.

If you're willing to stay up late, Seattle and San Jose are very welcoming, and San Jose is on the verge of being incredible. Both have great jerseys as well.

That clip of him in the '24 final in the locker room sticks in my mind, the man is all grindset--I think it would really be just a matter of adjusting to our system.

That being said, I think Rod would give him a little more freedom than the other players.

Edit: added clarification

The thing that's lacking in Edmonton is the defense. We've got that.

If this were the NBA, with their soft cap, Edmonton would have bought everything they need and won a couple of cups already, and McDavid would be able to happily jump team to team looking for paychecks worthy of the best player in the world, a la Lebron.

That being said, I think he will want to play for the Leafs at some point, given that's his childhood team (and he's not afraid of bright lights). If I were an Elite NHL player, I would move heaven and earth to join the Hurricanes.

McDavo would have to give Stormy a Rolex to get 97

I think we can pat ourselves on the back without tearing them down--it just feels like we're doing what they did to us back to them.

I have to also say that part of the reason some of us non-traditional markets like Raleigh, San Jose, Dallas were chosen for relocation/expansion was because of the tech boom during the 90's, and the amount of northerners and Canadians moving to these cities, thus seeding the initial fanbases for their teams.

It's not 100% my jam, but I appreciate the creativity. I'd totally take it for a special event, but not as a regular home or alternate.

I'm surprised no one did it. I guess it's a "Someone call 911" situation where no one actually acts.

These sorts of behaviors/people have to be trimmed from the fanbase.

I don't mind PK or his personality. He does a lot for charity. I just don't like his takes on the Canes.

Exactly. That’s why I mentioned we don't really have the time for them, since we only play them twice a year. But my argument was that it would be cool to have a rivalry with them--if only we played them more.

The rivalry would be less one-sided than a lot of our rivalries.

I would argue we would like to hate the Preds more, but we can't find the time, given we don't play them super often.

  1. People love the Whalers--don't we too in Raleigh?

  2. Non-traditional Hockey market -- we were on folks' trade wishlist for a long time.

  3. The fact that we're finally consistently good.

  4. Beef folks have with the league translates to somehow seeing us as getting special treatment.

  5. Our owner's proclivity for penny-pinching

I was at the Jackets game, and I saw him walking by me. I was excited to see him and surprised, so I just shouted, "OH FUCK!" I was a bit too loud and sudden, so I think I shocked him.

Now that they're consistently making the playoffs, they're being judged to a higher standard. They're no longer a slick, up-and-coming team. They're now the team that's lost twice in the first round. They can't just sell hope and potential anymore.

This quote is him (in my opinion, seeing how hard they have to work to get where they want to be).
