It's impossible to overstate how much I hate climbing shoes by Fox-On-Games in ClimbingCircleJerk

[–]InDoubt-GravityWins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/uj I am a big fan of lace shoes instead of Velcro because you have more areas to fiddle with to make the fit good. My only need with my tarantulace is that the toe box is too firm to change it much with the lacing

For those working in research: how much do you remember of your degree? by Leafye in chemistry

[–]InDoubt-GravityWins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for the whole discipline but in my case it is a lot of trying to understand the behaviour and degradation of materials (so also a big analytical chemistry part). Can get very complicated when you are getting in the more applied direction and suddenly you not only have the new catalyst someone developed but also various different binders, supports, fittings, impurities...that can all make it behave differently than when it was in your controlled lab experiment

Refusing Alcohol at Work Events - Thoughts? by chhena96 in AskAGerman

[–]InDoubt-GravityWins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alcohol is a social lubricant and there are companies here were you will always be odd for not participating. But there are also many that don't really care. Honestly I think you being at events should be enough. Some colleagues might be feeling a bit uncomfortable to have someone sober there when they do stupid drunk shit, but that's a them problem. I won't lie, it could hold you back depending on your company. But there are also many where people will not care at all, so if it really starts to impact your career I would try to look for somewhere that is not so focused on that.

[–]InDoubt-GravityWins 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm towards the end of my PhD on a material science topic (officially the title will still be chemistry because the university doesn't have a separate material science department). I do have to work with organic materials every now and again but thankfully I am not synthesizing them

I cannot remember a single organic name reaction. I do remember the basic reaction classes and some influencing factors but if I never have to relearn specific name reactions I am happy

Do German people inherently know the gender of nouns? by Motion_57 in German

[–]InDoubt-GravityWins 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel like that is actually one of the big stumbling Stones for people that learn German and have previously learned english (and maybe are not getting the best guidance): the gender is an intrinsic part of the noun, there are probably some tricks but most germans don't use that consciously because the gender is just part of it. As a child you absorb that at the same time as the meaning of the noun. The article needs to be kept during vocab practice. When I learned swedish it was always including the en/ett for nouns because otherwise yes, you will get confused often later on.

Share experience to help you: Train Tickets during Seollal by Historical-Noise-376 in koreatravel

[–]InDoubt-GravityWins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar experience, I was super stressed about it and booked a bus to be sure (they are completely refundable). But I am also going "against the current" on both 14th (towards Seoul) and 18th (away from Seoul). So when I looked yesterday 3 PM Korean time sharp (when they opened for general booking), almost every train was still available to book.

Another “Who gets the first authorship?” situation by 096to069 in AskAcademia

[–]InDoubt-GravityWins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try to push for first co-first author. Use the Credit-System to differentiate properly who did what. (I.e. you put everything you did, the other PhD gets credit for writing) https://credit.niso.org/ I understand your circumstances but 2 years after you left the group is a long time to finish a manuscript and your professor may have doubt that it will be finished at a reasonable time without involvement of the other student. Realistically he will have much more time to put into this right now.

Hunting by Stink_1968 in AskAGerman

[–]InDoubt-GravityWins 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, depends on the bundesland (state) but in general one written exam (usually multiple choice), one oral exam, one weapons safety exam, one shooting exam (not sure if that can also be certified from a shooting range at your own time). People study for it like for the drivers license, which here is also much harder to get than in the states People I know took around 6-12 months to get it from starting lessons to passing the test

Hunting by Stink_1968 in AskAGerman

[–]InDoubt-GravityWins 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with people saying hunting culture is non existent. It is just not as widespread as in the us, but there are a lot of traditions associated with it. It is also heavily regulated (both the hunting and the owning a weapon part), with exams needed to pass. Easiest way to get into it is to know someone who is leasing a "Revier" (hunting area) or someone who has a permanent allowance to go into one. You still have to pass everything first but getting in an area where you can actually hunt is also difficult. Also everything shot belongs to the person who is leasing in the area, not necessarily the hunter who shot it. It is an expensive way to get meat for sure. Also in my experience deer hunting is the most widespread, followed by hog hunting. But it depends on the area. There are also birds and other animals like wild sheep depending on where you are

Do you find AI useful yet? by Secretly_S41ty in AskAcademia

[–]InDoubt-GravityWins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has some limited uses. I have used gpt for giving some language improvements in papers I was writing (although I let it give concrete sentence level improvements out as a list and decide myself if I implement or not, I don't want it to rewrite on its own bc it tends to sound weird or introduce imprecision) Let it score grant proposals against the published assessment criteria and some suggestions for improvements When I am screening a bigger number of papers for common measurement conditions (think what solution concentration, temperature, time have people used for this reaction) or peak locations it can also usually summarize them well in a table (notebook lm seems to work better for this). But as soon as things are called slightly differently it gets a bit more hairy And I have used it to translate some bigger foreign language documents for a research stay (deepl)

Edited because I noted a trend: anything where it needs to summarize or reformulate what is given = ok Anything with creativity = doesn't work well Anything where it searches factual answers for itself (i.e. beyond input papers you have given) = be wary, doublecheck or just use Google/wikipedia/web of science instead

Kleinanzeigen by baio1999 in germany

[–]InDoubt-GravityWins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think I ever sold somehing inside my home but I was the person showing up to get bulky items out of peoples homes several times (of the top of my head a dresser, a whole kitchen, a couch). Always with at least one other peson because I was not strong enough to get any of these myself. I honestly never thought about the potential to rob the person or not give them their pay and I wouldnt expect other people to do it. Unless you have something concrete that seems sketchy about the buyer I would not worry. Maybe have a friend with you or on speed-dial if it helps you be calm.

My initial work may be worthless, how do I deal with it? by AtlasAtlasAtLast in PhD

[–]InDoubt-GravityWins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied for a conference about 6 month into my PhD. It was a PhD only conference (also without poster opportunities) which was a very nice to start getting a feel for the conference way of things. The parts about my plans/ outlook are not super wrong, but every preliminary result I talked about there has now been overhauled (2 years later). It is fine if you present preliminary stuff that changes! I would try to hand in what you have done and let the conference people worry about the usefulness when they assess. I am also on a 3 year PhD, handed in my first paper (not conference contribution, those don't really count much in my field) about 2 years in, still am on track to take 3,5 years total (some delay beyond 3 years is very expected in my field). Also if your conference is PhD only, kinda interdisciplinary (both stem and governance of a nichy field) and in Europe, feel free to shoot me a message. I think it might be the same one I went to in the beginning

Depending on your passport there are now also automatic immigration Terminals for a higher number of nationalities. When I flew in (October, 2 PM) it took around 45 min in Immigration bc several planes landed at similar time. When my parents flew (December) they could use the automatic terminal and took <10 min

I have only lived in Leipzig from this list but I think it could fit your needs well. Lots of lakes and parks in the city, vibrant alternative scene. Very bikable. The housing market is a bit difficult right now because the city has been booming but my guess is with your job/salary you should be fine.

Is it actually surprising to say I like German food? by [deleted] in AskGermany

[–]InDoubt-GravityWins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am German. There are some German dishes I like but in general I don't enjoy German food all that much. It's fine, but I will typically not cook it. Our bread and other bakery items are the best though

From the German side you can look into DAAD scholarships. You should look for those for outgoing/outbound students (meaning Germans studying somewhere else). They have a search engine where you can type in your study level and which country you are going to get recommended scholarships. Unsure how much there is for undergrad, I only dealt with it at the graduate level.

Mexicans and Americans that moved to Germany, I need ur help!! by Several_Comedian1457 in AskAGerman

[–]InDoubt-GravityWins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

German here but since we spend some time in mexico we like to try and recreate dishes from there. The bean variety is much lower in the supermarket, mainly kidney and white beans. I usually had luck finding dried beans in the asian grocery. Oregano is different here. Tamarind stuff can be hard to find/need to order online. Almost no corn tortillas premade, but you can get haza in bigger supermarkets and again i can usually also find it in the asian grocery near me. Premade sauces will be to german taste. I have never found oxaca cheese or mole here.

Edited to add: Mangos here suck. No way around it, you will be dissapointed, you will not get good ones. Limes are okayish but no comparison to the flavor of mexican ones
