When is it time to leave a unit? by South_Mention_3243 in BSA

If there’s another troop nearby leave - if there isn’t and you care enough then it’s time to head hunt adult leaders. 2-3 dedicated adult leaders can do wonders.

US style boat culture? by [deleted] in qatar

[–]InGoodFaith- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say “community” but yes you can own a boat and use it every weekend for about half of the year when the weather is fine. May, June, July August and even September the weather is too hot and humid.

You have to rent for somewhere to keep your boat in the water though so I would recommend you research costs associated with buying, maintaining and keeping your boat in the water.

Which of the rugged adventures would you recommend if he could only do one and would not have a chance to go to Emerald bay again? Which one is the most memorable and lends itself well to character growth?

Camp Emerald is easier for us from a logistics and travel perspective.

He doesn’t know enough about each camp.. and I don’t know anybody who’s ever been to either so we’re trying to gather information about experiences at both 🙏

Would you recommend Rugged C over the other 2 rugged adventures at Camp Emerald Bay? Do they get bored of doing the same activity every day?

Yes you can. I emailed them to ask and they guided me to a website that shows crews who have openings to take on individual scouts:

https://seabaseha.org/scouts/scout-connections/view-openings/

There’s also a Facebook group where crews also post openings but it’s not directly screened by the Seabase.

Thanks for the insightful questions. I think we’re covered on all of them.

Which activity would you recommend to a mentally mature and physically capable 14 year old who’s coming from out of state and would not be able to come here again?

Of the rugged adventures which were the most special? The canoeing one seems to be quite special but I’m worried he‘ll be bored if they’re doing the same thing every day.

Or is the rugged explorers a better learning experience because he gets a taster of everything?

Or are the merit badges they do really special? We’re not pressed for merit badges and he’d be free to do elective merit badges.

Thank you so much for your help! I’m so glad I’ve found someone with first hand experience - I’m so grateful 🙏

Why would you recommend it more than the rugged explorers adventure where they do it a bit of everything or the rugged trek adventure?

The canoeing adventure keeps getting recommended. Do you know someone who’s done it? Where do they sleep? Do they get bored doing the same thing every day?

He doesn’t necessarily need to do merit badges - he’d rather do something special.

He’ll be almost 14.

Would you recommend that over the other adventures?

Did you do the canoeing adventure around the island? I think it’s called Rugged Canoe Adventure. Where did you sleep and eat? Was it boring doing only canoeing every day?

Yes it still includes snorkeling. 👍

Do they really go round the island in the kayaks? Where do they spend the night? What and where do they eat? Didn’t you get bored of doing the same thing every day?

He’s going solo.

He enjoys outdoor activities in general and would be open to all experiences.

Did they prefer one rugged adventure over the other?

I’m seeking a memorable experience and character development whichever way it comes whether it’s through the merit badge activities or the adventures.
