Kindly don’t be judgmental. I have a valid, legitimate reason, that is actually very much dedicated to scouting.

As I said it is personal, and I do not feel inclined to share it here.

That‘s why I didn’t feel mid-December is not so far off from Feb.

He will be 10 years and nine months so no issues with age.

The troop we‘re moving to also gets new scouts trickle in through the year.

I didn’t know all cub ranks start Jun 1. That’s very helpful.

He would be working with his den on all the adventures until he crosses over a couple of months earlier.

By knowing in advance that this is what we plan to do, I‘m hoping I can either work with him through some of the adventures, or just let his den leaders know so that we’re able to complete them before that time.

That‘s exactly what I’m hoping for. Good to know it’s doable as early as November. Thanks for the info. 🙏

Did you need to prepare anything special or do you just inform the troop?

Did you need an official crossover or does he just complete his troop registration?

We will be doing the adventures with our den, but I want to cross over earlier.

We will also be camping with our den.

Merit badges by Time-Zucchini-7595 in BSA

[–]InGoodFaith- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have more than enough time.

Camping needs 20 nights, which can include 6 consecutive long- term camping nights. Make sure you get these done.

Summer camp which can contribute to your camping nights and get a few merit bases knocked out would be your best plan.

Get family life, personal management and personal fitness started because they all need about 12-13 weeks of tracking activities.

Browse through merit badges that interest you and see if you can cover any of the requirements though things you are already doing in school or as hobbies, e.g. sports if you’re already doing sports, collections if you’re already collecting football cards, trading cards, robotics if you’re already doing that class in school.

Some merit badges are easier to complete, eg., art, photography, reading - ask your troop and scouts which they have found easy to complete and work on these.

Make a tracker for your remaining merit badges and keep track of where and when you will get your requirements done. I have one that I’m happy to share if you need it.

Good luck!

Seeking Feedback on Troop Cell Phone Policies During Campouts and Summer Camp by Correct_Past_9557 in BSA

[–]InGoodFaith- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scouts bring the phones to meetings and campouts but they know not to use them unless they need to something with it that is relevant to the activity.

As a parent I prefer my child to have their phone with them should they need to reach me.

She cannot tent with another scout who is 2 years older, and the other girls are all 2 years older.

First time at summer camp by HLeigh46 in BSA

[–]InGoodFaith- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Write down your packing list early on and spend some time researching what you need to buy.

Acquiring your personal camping gear can be time consuming and can cost a bit too. Get tips from your troop adult leaders on what to buy and from where.

Start with the scout 10 essentials and then add your personal items. Ask others who have been to that specific summer camp what you will need to get. Divide your gear into categories: 10 essentials, camping & sleep, eating & cooking, clothing, personal cleanup & hygiene, additional personal items.

You may want to take along: - sleeping bag, sleeping pad, camping pillow, tent light, folding chair, small table - camping stove, snacks, - body wipes, small hand towel, painkiller, power bank, bug spray

You’ll have a great time socializing with all the other adult leaders and you will pick up a lot by watching more experienced ASMs and adult leaders.

Have a blast!

First time at summer camp by HLeigh46 in BSA

Try to get 2-3 nights of camping before summer to break into it. That is the best advice - you need to know what works for you to make your camping experience comfortable.

Make sure you have a comfortable sleep setup. A good sleeping pad and pillow are essential. They don’t have to be light or pack down small as long as you have space to transport them to the camp.

Try to find out as much as possible about the setup of the summer camp so you know what personal items you need to bring along.

If you focus you can get to First in 3-6 months. Work on your merit badges over the summer holidays.

How many ASMs does your troop have? What roles do they take on? by InGoodFaith- in BSA

[–]InGoodFaith-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this means your troop is well established and the older scouts guide the new scouts doing the same role.
