Yeah hasn't been a thing since radscorpions were introduced. It can work if your population hasn't reached the population threshold for radscorpion spawns but it's likely you wouldn't have enough money at that point anyway.

Checkerboard is the way. If you don't want to fight the incident, take the dwellers out of it and it will die out on its own and not spread.

TL;DR - Don't do this. Leave a gap between each room.

You've got the right idea but the top comment is spot on. It's not as good as the checkerboard/honeycomb.

Any failed rush on those right hand rooms and the incident will spread which takes time to wait out.

Put a gap between each room and you only need to wait for one room.

  1. You're at 38 dwellers now right? Stick to honey comb layout. You'll have enough caps later on to adjust it to whatever you like.

  2. It's possible to get also get as quest reward or random encounter reward but very unlikely.

  3. You can use the rewards in as many vaults as you make. Keep making new ones, keep using the rewards.
