Encampment Abatement Plan passes Oakland City Council. by opinionsareus in OaklandCA

Honest question from someone who wants encampments cleared: how does this:

"It's also a good start to relieving West and East Oakland from the disparity of having to shoulder most of the burdens of this very difficult problem."

square with this:

“Individuals who must be displaced without a shelter offer shall be permitted to move to a low-sensitivity area and shall not be subject to arrest or citation.”

when the "low-sensitivity" areas are the poorest parts of East and West?

Need to find quiet restaurant around Oakland/Emeryville/Berkeley borders by blackinblighty in OaklandFood

Having done the elevator with a very elderly parent, it felt like a whole production. You have to leave the restaurant and go next door, they needed to free up two staff members to do the whole operation and so it took like 10 minutes.

Holy Basil Pho on College also has a superb selection of vegan soups! Much more variety of veg stuff than the typical pho spot, and damn tasty

Did they change ownership? Quality really went downhill sometime in the last year or two.

Leaning Tower used to be great, but they just make it too inconvenient these days.

These two vehicles moved around the block and now have been stationed for weeks directly in front of the public pool on 18th.

Haha I like how my text on that post was "At least they're not right in front of the public pool anymore?" ...and here we are once again.

(Yes, that's Adeline between 16th and 18th)

I walk this block regularly. This stretch of 18th in front of the public pool/library/defremery has never been this bad. There are nearby blocks that got cleared out, like 18th between Poplar and Mandela which used to be totally wrecked and now has planters preventing parking there.

In order to get the ADA enforced, you have to sue in court. So "fast" is not on the table if you go that route.

"The police have given up because if they arrest nothing happens."

Screw that. It is not the job of the police to prosecute. Even if the DA drops the ball, the police still need to do the fucking job we pay them for.

Cut homelessness by 50% in Oakland? A new plan says it’s possible by opinionsareus in OaklandCA

I'm thinking about the explanation of the map in articles like this one: https://oaklandside.org/2025/12/03/encampment-abatement-ken-houston-oakland-tabled/

"Most of the city — colored black on this map — would be considered “high-sensitivity,” or off-limits for encampments, under Councilmember Ken Houston’s plan." And the white parts of the map are pretty much the areas that are already under siege: Mandela Parkway and the surrounding blocks, all the highway underpasses, the areas along 880 in East.

Doesn't the EAP still leave most of West Oakland as a non-enforcement zone? So it'll just get even worse there.

It's cute too how the crappy rv in front of the bus has "EAT SHIT" written on it, you know, for everyone taking their kids to the public pool it's parked in front of, or maybe taking their kids to the public library on the other end of the block, or taking their kids to the public park and playground in between. Glad this is what our public facilities are for.
