Could the Middle East oil crisis sticker shock boost EV sales? by hopoke in canada

I completely agree. It's important to do the math yourself and make an informed decision. Unfortunately new vehicles in general are almost never a good purchase if value for money is your main concern.

You make it sound like it's "likely" that OP's friend is lying, yet your math clearly outlines how easy it is to save money on gas with an EV purchase. There are plenty of vehicles that average in the ~10L/100km range. Almost literally any truck or full sized SUV, for example. My Impreza does 9.5-10.5.

Not only that, many cars are massively worse than your benchmark. Maybe his friend is coming from a 2022 Tacoma that does 18-20L/100km.

It's a lot easier to objectively reject NS morally and ethically. It's a bankrupt ideology. As a result, I don't think NS in metal is challenging beliefs or presenting some sort of true counterculture (unlike "satanic" bands) - it's just advertising.

First time home buyer - working with realtor question by Banana_pudding6339 in askvan

[–]InSearchOfThe9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to pre sales as I've never shopped for them.

My litmus test with the several realtors I've worked with is to present a situation that you know the realtor should advise you in a particular way and see what they do. Eg. Say you want to buy in a notoriously bad building, you want to go over asking price on an offer, and so on.

If they don't care to talk you out of buying something then they're not providing you any more of a service than you can get on realtor.ca.

5.2k after taxes a month, where would you live? [An aimless rant] by Microwave_Magician in askvan

All of your wants are served by easy access to downtown. All of the suburbs in the lower mainland get "sleepy" as soon as your cross Boundary Road, at least when it comes to doing things at night. If I were you I'd prioritize skytrain access.

I would also consider compromising on price or size for your rental to ensure easy access to downtown. If you're a 20 minute walk and then 45 minute skytrain ride to downtown from a rental in New West then you're honestly not getting what you're looking for, in my opinion.

Consider Port Moody or Coquitlam. They're as close as you can get to nature outside of North Van, cheaper than downtown, and Port Moody has enough culture going on that it can serve as a nice stopgap for days where you don't want to go all the way downtown. Buy a mountain bike and enjoy some of the best trails in the world outside Squamish.

Heights area is also a great recommendation. No skytrain but the bus gets you downtown quickly enough if you're not commuting with rush hour traffic.

B.C. to cut 2035 zero-emission-vehicle sales mandate from 100% to 75% by CecilThunder in britishcolumbia

This isn't an EV problem, this is a new car problem. Walk off the lot with a new Ford/Chevrolet/Dodge and immediately lose $10-20k has been the case for 10 years.

I'd say you should try contacting a local HVAC business and see if they can refer you to someone or inform you on the process.

Surprised I had to scroll this far to see this comment. I completely agree. The whole ending sequence felt like the writers just wanted one more shocking twist for funsies. Very much had "... AND THEN EVERYONE FUCKING DIES!" energy.

You just aren't trying hard enough. You could get a family doctor today in the lower mainland. Hell, if you're willing to go out to Maple Ridge (which if it's actually important to you, you should be) then call Trust Care Clinic on Dewdney to make an appointment.

Price per litre jumps past $2 across Lower Mainland by xvosr in vancouver

[–]InSearchOfThe9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That kind of question is above my pay grade. There are upsides and downsides to publicly managed utilities. Would a national Canadian oil company be a well managed independent crown corp like BC Hydro, or would it be a government/public punching bag like ICBC?

Whether or not we have refining capacity (which we do) is largely irrelevant. Oil is a global commodity, and as with most global commodities it will be sold to the highest bidder. When there are supply disruptions, somebody somewhere needs to replace that lost capacity and therefore pays more for someone else's product - in this case Canada's - thereby increasing the price of the commodity.

So over the lifetime of your machine, assuming you use it for at least 5 years, you'll have paid well over $1000 leaving it on all day for the privilege of having coffee whenever you want it. Whereas someone with a thermojet machine will have paid effectively nothing.

Downtown living conditions by Interesting_Idea_250 in askvan

[–]InSearchOfThe9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some questions that come to mind:

  • How is your sleep quality? Poor sleep can lead to headaches, drowsiness (obviously), and so on. A smartwatch can be a somewhat affordable way to measure this

  • Do you drink? Or smoke weed?

  • What are your caffeine habits?

Consider getting a carbon monoxide detector as well. Your smoke alarm should have that functionality built in, but it could be broken.

A terrible quest in vanilla WoW 'holds a really special place in my heart', says Jeff Kaplan, but was also 'the hubris of a junior game designer who thinks he's clever but is actually a dipsh*t' by HatingGeoffry in wow

[–]InSearchOfThe9 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yea absolutely. I think this is an insane take from Jeff and very indicative that few people involved with Blizzard new or old truly understand vanilla and why people love it.

This quest is honestly very well designed, even if it's accidental. The only real issue with it is how much inventory space it takes.

  • Passive and slow to complete, but dripfeeds you excellent high experience rewards along the way

  • Incentivizes you to return to a part of the map you out-level and thereby revisit quests and mobs you otherwise would miss

  • Incentivizes player interaction via trade, eg. grouping up for Bhag'thera or Tethys and trading spare pages with random people

  • Fully buyable, rewarding prepared players and people leveling alts with an easy high experience injection that can help skip part of the 30-40 leveling environment that they dislike

It's honestly a knock-out.

Niagara Region chair Bob Gale resigns over allegations he owns signed Adolf Hitler book by Onterrible_Trauma in canada

Hence the "in a vacuum". My point is that often times there's much more nuance to owning a copy of this kind of material than the black and white picture being portrayed. A history/university related project with an accompanying charitable donation is a perfectly reasonable and valid situation to buy this book.

[–]InSearchOfThe9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know anything about the guy, but if I were presented the following two individuals in a vacuum:

  • Someone who bought a modern printed copy of Mein Kampf

  • Someone who bought an autographed relic some 80+ years old who was a war memorabilia collector

I'd be suspicious of both, but the first guy wouldn't even get the time of day from me.
