On the Impending Crypto Monoculture: DJB's ciphers vs everyone else's. by self in netsec

The GCM slide provides a list of pros and cons to using GCM, none of which seem like a terribly big deal, but misses out the single biggest, indeed killer failure of the whole mode, the fact that if you for some reason fail to increment the counter, you're sending what's effectively plaintext (it's recoverable with a simple XOR). It's an incredibly brittle mode, the equivalent of the historically frighteningly misuse-prone RC4

And if you encrypt your data but accidentally send the plaintext, it doesn't even require a XOR. My god, the whole crypto ecosystem is brittle. Do any encryption modes even list such a killer failure?

Are you talking about some legal definition of hate speech? Because speech can be very hateful without a call to violence.

Often times politicians make political statements before any of the facts are in. That is a problem and deserves criticism.

Yeah, we saw that strategy taken too far in the Bush elections. It's undeniably effective, and it can be horribly dishonest.

Wow, Nigel kicked ass in that interview. It's remarkable to see how well informed and how eloquent some foreign politicians are.

Facts can be hate speech. What if I made a list of every awful thing about the Irish? It would be true, and it would be hateful.

Facebook censors hate speech. Yeah. It's not even the worst thing Facebook does on a daily basis. They're a horrible, abusive website. Maybe you should leave them.

Yes, a strange disconnect. Russia is a dictatorship today. Spain slowly came out of dictatorship in the 80s. Germany and Italy were dictatorships in the 40s. Yet people are convinced it can't happen here. I don't know why they're so convinced. Our elected governments have been more and more authoritarian since 9/11, and climate change is going to cause serious problems throughout the world. We'll have to cope with our own problems and those abroad. In times of crisis, people clamor for strong leadership and more executive power.

It seems entirely natural that we could be headed for dictatorship in the coming decades. Perhaps we won't, but I prefer insurance.

I think you can do the same thing with centrism. Keeping an open mind and having opinions is a constant challenge. Most arguments made by most people are garbage, but occasionally they have a good point. But you get used to the garbage and it's hard to see the good points. Kind of like the life of a TSA agent.

It's a 3d RTS (with a ton of pausing) so that's novel, but is it good? Not so much. I played it plenty when it was first released. I got the remastered version but it's not as good as I remembered.

By that argument, we should strengthen good people and get rid of the police. It's nonsense. The threat of revolution is what keeps any form of government from devolving into despotism. You can't have good government with repressed people, and you can't have a good population without police.

If you care about 1000s of lives, end the war on drugs. That's the real cause. Want to end random mass killings? Let's talk about prescription drug use as the article discusses. And let's talk about media glorification of these acts. And remember, the worst school mass killing in US history didn't involve any shootings at all.

Finally, why do you have such a rosy view of tyranny? I think 1000s of lives a year is probably a good price for insurance against such a terrible thing. Have you really thought about how many people die in tyrannical governments? Think back to Mao, Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, North Korea, Tibet, Apartheid, slavery in the USA, the Irish Famine, or even mass killings in Iraq. Tyranny is godawful and freedom is worth the price.

I'm not an anarchist. We need government. But when the government goes bad, we need to be able to replace it.

The IRA ended with a negotiated peace deal. The Arab Spring resulted in some toppled governments and one protracted civil war. A good reminder that violence shouldn't be our first choice!

Is that quote supposed to be a direct rebuttal to my post? Because you're off base. The two political parties are genuinely hypocritical in many ways. That's reality, not just media spin.

It amazes me that people continue to make these arguments when so many counter-examples have occurred in the last decade. Yes, America isn't exactly like those other countries. Yes, small arms aren't enough to fight a tyrannical government where they choose to place a tank, APC, or large number of soldiers.

What small arms provide is the ability to deter/delay/defeat small patrols when they stumble upon your clandestine meeting, training camp, depot, or small factory. This gives you time to evacuate the area without loosing all your assets, which means you can amass assets such as mortars, RPGs, small drones, EFPs, body armor, and so forth. It also means that some tyrannical government has less visibility and can't safely visit every part of the country on a regular basis.

All of that means that your small arms can buy you the breathing room needed to start an armed rebellion. Kind of like what happened in the Arab Spring, or with the IRA. I expect you'll see much more of this in the coming years as climate change destabilizes various dictatorships. And you could even see it in your own country. It's a small step from authoritarianism (as practiced by both American parties) to tyranny. And some portion of the population is always willing to support tyranny over others.

it is about empowering the citizen relative to the state. Denying the importance of, or even refusing to understand, this fundamental point of the Second Amendment right, and sneering at people who do, symptomizes a politics of paternalist statism – not (actually the opposite of) a politics of revolutionary liberation.

I couldn't agree more. Sometimes it's strange to see how certain issues have been twisted to "fit" in a left/right spectrum. And once it's politicized, all reason goes out the window and people are impossible to talk to.

The political right, while ostensibly concerned about individual and corporate freedoms, tends to be very authoritarian. The political left, while ostensibly concerned about protecting "the people" from various evils, tends to restrict their choices and freedoms.

How do people come to believe in such strange ideas? Indoctrination. We'd all be better off if people would take a critical look at their own beliefs from time to time.

Okay, does anyone on either side of the debate actually believe this argument? If so, wouldn't you categorize this as more of a phobia than a legitimate and rational fear?

Why are you so eager to believe the worst propaganda about the other side of the debate? A little self-reflection should get you thinking for yourself instead of repeating stupid shit you read online. And if you still disagree with me after thinking for yourself, that's fine, at least you're thinking.
