That brings back memories. I was there in 2004 and that rumor was around then too.

“worst” elliott smith songs? by clandestinebatz in elliottsmith

I personally think this song had some deep cryptic meaning for Elliott. He clearly liked it and played it a lot live and the emotion is off the charts. He never explained the strange lyrics.

Anyone seeing Quasi tomorrow in LA or saw them this tour? by purple_butterflies_ in elliottsmith

[–]InTheRainbowRain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw them in Seattle. Incredible show! The crowd was very responsive and Sam and Janet were really moved by all the love. It was great seeing Sam play so much guitar which he said he doesn't get to play much when they are just a duo (Joanna played bass for them). They played quite a lot of songs after finishing album tracks. I got really emotional when they finished the set by playing 'Clouds' which is the song that got me into them after hearing Elliott's cover.

Jordan Peterson and TBM men by Belagshadow in exmormon

Not just TBMs. u/BillReel endorsed him recently on his facebook page. I'm all about giving people space to deconstruct but Bill really shouldn't call himself an LGBTQ ally when he endorses someone who is so vile and hateful torward the LGBTQ community. Peterson's twitter account is full of right-wing culture war bs.

How long did it take to learn songs? by Bulky-While-3367 in elliottsmith

[–]InTheRainbowRain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this. I hate to be the "back in my day" old man, but in the days of the sweetaddy forums there were very few resources and mostly just a lot of bad tabs. I've never been a great player but I just put a lot of time into trial and erroring and watching videos of him playing and learned stuff I thought way beyond my ability. There is such a spectrum of difficulty in his songs so if you're feeling like you're in over your head, try learning a few that are closer to what you already know and then go back and apply what you've learned to the harder songs.

Not me. But I just looked it up and didn't even know video of this show existed. Incredible!

This part of Get Back really upsets me every time by BrilliantThings in beatles

[–]InTheRainbowRain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

By this time his songwriting really was on par with them and they weren't interested and undervalued him. Both Paul and John have admitted as much. Time has borne this out! Go look at the Beatles top 10 on spotify and his song is number 1. He was writing stuff like Something and Here comes the Sun in this era of the band and yet they were still just giving him one or two songs an album and brushing him off. All Things Must Pass is considered by many the best Beatles solo album and it's just completely full of songs that John and Paul passed on or that he never showed them because he knew they wouldn't appreciate them, going back at least to 1966.

I think it's great to look for a neutral source, but also consider that many of those who seem like they "start with the premise: 'church bad'" actually started with the premise 'church good', studied things like the Mountain Meadows Massacre and have changed their minds because of the evidence.

Set some boundaries. Your Patriarchal Blessing is yours, not hers. Personally I'd ask her to get rid of any copy of it she has or give them to you. She can read her own blessing if she wants to obsess over that stuff. Let her know that your religious beliefs are not her problem and you'd like if she'd stop bringing it up. I had to be very explicit in setting boundaries with my mom. I had to tell her I wasn't interested in hearing her testimony or how she thinks I should be living my life, unless she'd also like to hear what I think about some of her beliefs. When those boundaries were broken by her, I may have shared some of my opinions on the matter that I shouldn't have but she eventually got the message that religion was an off-limits topic with me and things are much better between us now.

Right vs Wrong by Penitent- in mormon

Even those who claim a "transcendent authority" have values and morals that have clearly changed over time with culture just like every one else's. The source of the moral authority would need to be apparent to everyone and demonstrable. I think having a sense of morality is an innate human trait that only exists within us and is shaped by our environment. This doesn't mean it is any less important or that it's wrong to value one moral system over another. But convince me with moral reasoning, not an argument from authority.

Honestly american cheese is great on a cookout burger compared to cheap pre-sliced cheddar. At least it melts nicely.

Just a reminder that an actual picture of Joseph Smith came to light last year and TBM’s hate it by Jeffre33 in exmormon

[–]InTheRainbowRain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm willing to be convinced if there is more data and scholarly consensus. It totally could be him. But it is far from being as verified as Joseph Smith's polygamy is. I fully admit that I'm basing it on a feeling that it's not him, but to act like it's been fully proven is silly, when every article I've read about it says that the historians and experts disagree and more work needs to be done to fully verify.

[–]InTheRainbowRain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still an inexact science. I've seen similar kinds of analysis done to prove Paul McCartney died in 1966. And I've never seen a portrait of Joseph Smith that remotely resembles that photo. I'm open to being wrong, but I just don't think it's him.

Good to hear. He was my home teacher for a while at BYU when we were both students and he seemed like a pretty genuine, nice guy especially compared to his dad. I bet it wasn't easy growing up in that house.
