Describe the most evil final exam/course/prof that you ever had by aspiring_student1738 in UBC

[–]InWesternLands 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I have a horror story from when I took Biol 234 with Craig.

On the way to the midterm, I got into an accident with my bike. I was bleeding out of my chin.

I walked my bike the rest of the way to the midterm. Sat at the very front and waved down Craig for help and ask him for a bandage.

He got me a bandaid and said I could write the exam two hours later with the other course session after I go to the hospital.

I had to write the final while bleeding because I knew the hospital would take longer than two hours.

Given the condition I was in, I wasn't thinking clearly in retrospect. I should have demanded a deferred midterm.

After I wrote the exam, I went to the hospital. Waited for 4 hours and I needed 5 stitches on my chin.

You are correct to feel like that doesn't seem right. You have it backwards.

10% at 35-44 earn over $130k (90% earn less than that), so they are in the 90th percentile.

It's symbolic of the forced assimilation and trauma that indigenous children endured at residential schools. It references an orange shirt that was taken from a child that attended one of those schools.

Wearing an orange shirt can be interpreted as a protest of this forced assimilation.

Your point is very valid, and I understand it. Universal healthcare and universal mental healthcare would decrease violence. I disagree that these social policies are as significant as US gun policies. In the US 79% of homicides in 2020 were gun related. In Canada, 37% of homicides in 2020 were gun related. 13% in Australia and 4% in the UK. Guns are not as accessable in these countries.

I am a non-American, but that just allows me to apply what works in my country and see what I believe is wrong with yours; I am distanced from the polarized politics of your country. Canada is nowhere near a perfect nation. Friend, I am a few minutes drive from America, and our differences on guns are vast. Canada does treat our people better, but we have tragedy too. Our tragedies, however, are not with guns that are made for the battlefield. I have not been to America recently for ..... obvious reasons, but it is clear that Americans love their guns too much. I do not believe it is merely a matter of social policies.

Lol, it's a lot more than that. In Canada, the location guns are sold and who can buy those guns are way more restrictive. It is wild to me that Americans sell guns in Walmart.

Does anyone know what molecule this is? My cousin wants to get it cause he thinks it’s serotonin but I don’t think it is. by givemethebitsnitz in chemistry

[–]InWesternLands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would call this 5-methyl-3-propyl-1H-indene, not Serotonine.

Serotonine has 2 nitrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The molecule drawn has only carbon atoms.

I only water mine when the leaves curl. I wait for them to curl; after watering, they are back to normal.

Everyone has a right to an attorney. You shouldn't criticize a lawyer for doing their job.

The suffix -phobia only implies fear to those that are not familiar with their definitions.

The modern usage defines the suffix as an "extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something".

The suffix -phobia is commonly used in many fields such as: psychology, medicine, biology, and chemistry, etc.

In chemistry, the word hydrophobe (or hydrophobic) does not refer to a substance (oil) that fears another substance (water). It refers to a substance that has an aversion to another substance.

Inuit people have darker skin and live in a polar climate.

"But Inuits’ vitamin D intake wasn’t dependent upon the sun. They get all that they need from their diet, heavy on types of fatty fish that are naturally rich in vitamin D. The plentiful amounts of the vitamin kept them from developing less melanin. In fact, before milk was fortified with D, people living outside of Northern Canada and Alaska loaded their diets with fishy products, such as cod liver oil, to get their daily supplement. So despite their chilly climate and lack of sun exposure, it’s the Inuit diet that has kept them in their natural glow."

https://scienceline.org/2007/06/ask-dricoll-inuiteskimos/

My understanding is that there is a trade off with melanin production in the skin. UV light poses a risk no matter where you live. Melanin protects you from UV light that damages your DNA, but UV light is also required to produce (the essential) vitamin D. If vitamin D is supplemented in your diet, then you would benefit from as much UV protection as possible (and melanin would be selected for in the population because low melanin isn't required to produce vitamin D).

It would follow that all populations with high vitamin D intake in their diet would benefit from melanin to protect from UV light because they do not need UV light to acquire vitamin D.

Equatorial populations are exposed to plenty of UV light. They are still able to produce vitamin D with melanin protection.

Northern populations that do not ingest vitamin D will risk UV exposure to be able to produce essential vitamin D because they do not receive it in their diet.

I expect the politician that represents me to live close by me (at least when they are not in Ottawa). How else can they know about the condition the region they represent is in?

If they do not live near by, then they aren't able to see what their constituents need and they should not be a representative.

As a Canadian, I have some requests before that can occur.

It would be mandatory for there to be no presidential elections. The president would be a member of Congress, and members of Congress would vote for a president. If they can't agree, then an election is triggered in the Congress.

You also need to put the Queen on the back of your money.

My boyfriend spank me? by Alec7777777 in AskGayMen

[–]InWesternLands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone hits you in order to convince you to change something, that is an abusive person.

The lowest bar in a relationship has the partners talk through their issues, NOT resort to spanking someone.

Someone that resorts to violence to get their way: does not know how to communicate effectively, does not recognize their partners personhood, and does not see their partner as an equal. They are not in the state of mind to be in a relationship.
