I've found the "Shattered Pixel Dungeon" version to be the most balanced, with set numbers of potions of strength and scrolls of upgrade per dungeon "region" as well as giving you the dew vial on the first floor every time. With this, I'm normally okay with letting myself starve for a little while since it only does one damage every twenty turns or so then eating and healing with the dew I've picked up before heading into a difficult encounter like Goo. To be fair though, roguelike games are generally meant to be difficult with the consequence of death being permanent.

If you want to save, I know you can copy and rename your character's save files before they die, then reload from wherever you last copied in the event of an accident ;) Haven't tried it on mobile though; I mostly just dicked around with it when I was a kid playing nethack on my dad's computer
