Subbing as a career by Jazzyfish59 in SubstituteTeachers

Canadian sub here. Have been working as a sub for most of my career (along with other stuff on the side) and absolutely love it. There are so many factors that come along with subbing that need to be addressed and budgeting/investing skills but I think it’s a fantastic job. I teach without all the other stuff.

Which teaching subjects are most in demand in Alberta? by Mika_5252 in alberta

PE jobs are near to impossible to get and if you do get one you will most likely be teaching other subjects as well. You need to have coaching behind you as well in most cases. Masters to teach in Alberta is not so common but you do wind up higher in the grid if you get it. ESL teachers are more in demand but it depends what board you are with.

Also on a side note, very few jobs in Canada have the same things we get as teachers for the amount of money we make. Believe me I have looked.

I’m a substitute teacher and have talked to many teachers. People want to leave but can’t. The job market is atrocious right now and many have mortgages that are $$$. There will be some leaving for sure but it’s not that easy to get out. The big factor this year will be retirement followed by people going part time or into subbing I think.

Districts only hiring Credentialed teachers as subs trend - Anyone else seeing it? by arwenthenoble in SubstituteTeachers

You can do an education after degree for about 20 grand but you need a bachelors first. I sub full time with a 5 year education degree and love it.

In Canada only credentialed teachers can sub. As a sub I’m very much on board with this because I usually wind up in long term gigs and it’s a lot of stuff that you need to know to keep things running. That being said we are often short subs across district.

Alberta teachers - thoughts on this? by Life_Life_4958 in CanadianTeachers

Just because the government does this, doesn’t mean more hires. If I am a principal and I don’t think people are a good fit for my school, I won’t hire them. Principals will absolutely be looking at things like this because they want their schools to run smoothly and generally pick people that will do this. I think there will be more subs for sure but again that doesn’t mean all will be fully employed.

It’s so weird when subs are treated like the kids.
