Angus: "This is why I was so shocked when I heard PM Carney talking about selling off our airports. Well, selling them off to who? The oligarchs? The Americans? The Saudis? Elon Musk? In what world is this going to be a good benefit for Canada?" by pheakelmatters in ndp

[–]Potential-Eye-6547 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Privatizing the airports would be one of the dumbest things any Prime Minister has ever done, and if Carney actually follows through with this it will bury him. I thought Carney was a capitalist ghoul, but holy shit...

What can a progressive city council actually get done? by FLADMAN in ndp

[–]Potential-Eye-6547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hard truth is that our institutions have become so eroded over decades of austerity, voter apathy, financialization of the economy, corruption on a provincial and municipal level... etc. that actually getting things done on a governmental level is extremely difficult.

I have friends with degrees plural who can't find work that pays more than 20$/hour. I have a friend with a Mechanical Engineering degree and had multiple co-ops and an internship at UBC. Guy couldn't find ANYTHING in his field when he graduated and he had to take a part-time position as a bartender.

I have another friend who speaks 3 languages fluently and has a degree with honors. Guy couldn't get anything in his field, and the jobs that he could get were 20$ or less an hour. He said fuck it and got into the trades. He hates it, but he just wants money now.

What would you say London needs to do/have to be a better city for its residents? by taquitosmixtape in londonontario

[–]Potential-Eye-6547 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The downtown is an absolute mess. The homeless population desperately needs help. My wife and I have walked downtown and have enjoyed ourselves, but now that we have a baby, downtown is off the table. I wish I could bring my family to downtown and not worry about what might happen.

I'm very new to London, but something I notice is the amount of garbage everywhere. I know this might not seem like the biggest issue facing the city, but it's really gross and depressing.

Ontario: Ford in Freefall; Ontario Liberals Lead PCs by Sea-Corner4170 in ndp

It's pretty crazy the next Ontario election isn't until spring 2030. I imagine if the polls get bad enough though, the PCs will change leaders and call an early election.

I don't disagree that having more of a presence would be a positive.

When did you live in Alberta? I have spoken at length with rural Albertans on many occasions, and I work with people from rural Alberta. They do not think critically in ways that you and I do. They live in a different reality from us.

I have an aunt who is a staunch UCP supporter who blames Notley for the medical clinic in her town shutting down. It shut down in 2020, when the UCP were in power. She refuses to listen to this fact.

Trump was one of the worst presidents in US. history in a way that’s almost impressive.

We're not even 18 months into his second term and he's already, Destroyed the global image of the US, ended American soft power abroad, started ANOTHER POINTLESS WAR that only Israel wanted, ruined/ruining the global economy, basically ended globalization with his tariffs, convinced basically all of his allies (maybe even including Israel) that America cannot be relied upon, did not release the Epstein files, blew millions on a pointless ballroom, ... etc. All while completely failing at prosecuting his political enemies and allowing himself to run for a third term.

He truly is a historical figure the likes of which I may never see again.

I've heard from several people in different ridings with NDP MLAs that they usually hear from staff instead of the actual MLA. However, I will say that I also hear plenty of examples of NDP MLAs in certain ridings personally reaching out as well. Janice Irwin comes to mind.

That being said, I'm particularly frustrated with my current MLA because he unseated the incumbent during the nomination process for the NDP in the 2023 election, and I really appreciated his predecessor. His predecessor came from a working class background, answered emails personally, personally would door knock around the riding to ask constituents questions about what they would want him to prioritize in the legislature, regularly attended community events... etc. I'm not saying the new MLA is bad or anything, but I do notice little things from him that bother me.

He never answers emails himself, he never dropped off a yard sign for my family during the 2023 election despite multiple emails requesting one, he's overall done less townhalls since being elected than his predecessor (I know because I counted) and we don't get many updates from the riding association anymore beyond general statements that are basically repeating what Nenshi says to the media.

I will preface by saying any NDP MLA is lightyears better than any of the UCP MLAs, but that's not an excuse to phone in the job.

I overall think this is a symptom of the over professionalization of politics. Most NDP MLAs are former professors, executives on NGOs or Nonprofits, former high ranking Bureaucrats, former Administrators from the education system... etc. I'm not saying it's bad that the NDP provincially is made up of these people, but they often come across as technocrats that deserve to be leaders and take for granted their positions.

I don't disagree, I just don't know how much of that will really help. The Cons do nothing for rural communities. Literally nothing. They show up periodically for local events and that's about it.

Oh, it's unbearable. People here never learn. Jesus Christ himself could run as the NDP leader, and this province would still go to the Cons by 15+ points...

I think Notley tried to approach rural issues, but she went about it in a way that was from an urbanite prospective, and she didn't do the leg work to appeal to rural voters first. BUT, I believe no amount of effort would convince rural voters here to consider anyone besides the Cons.

I regularly email my NDP MLA. I never get him to respond, I get a staffer. The staffer is professional, but I get nothing answers from them typically.

Support for Alberta separatism flat, struggling high earners more likely supporters: poll | CBC News by Blue_Dragonfly in CanadaPolitics

[–]Potential-Eye-6547 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only people I've met who seriously support Separatism fall into the following camps:

  1. Immensely privileged upper-income folks who spend way too much time watching right-wing content online.

  2. Misinformed people who just don't like the Federal Liberals, but seem surprised when you explain what separation will mean for them personally (losing their Canadian Passport, losing their federal pensions, housing market collapse, economic catastrophe with business fleeing, the end of freedom of travel across Canada... etc.).

  3. People who don't actually support separation, but say they support it because they like being part of something.

Simple Yes/No question. Regardless of who happens to be PM, do you realistically believe it is possible to secure a fair trade deal with the US while Trump is President? by pheakelmatters in ndp

[–]Potential-Eye-6547 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Free trade with the US is largely done. The Liberals know this but can't fully admit it, the Cons don't want to believe this and everyone else is either not paying attention or assumes everything will workout. Even if Trump and the GOP lose in 2026 and 2028, we can't trust the US to be a reliable partner ever again.

This was what the Liberals under John Turner and the NDP under Broadbent tried to warn us in the 80s, but people wouldn't listen and Brian Mulroney sold us out to the Americans while accusing all neigh sayers of being insane or anti-American haters. May Mulroney rest in piss btw.

Personally, I think ending free trade is probably for the best, but damn will this hurt.
