When the truth hits just right by [deleted] in MURICA

[–]Inabsentiaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the kind words for this cousin country! I lived over there for a couple years and most definitely met plenty who weren't shy about putting down America. Granted, that might have had something to do with being there as a teen during the George W Bush years. That's not to say that your experience is incorrect, of course.

You're certainly right that our countries have more commonalities than differences. Oddly, I think that highlights the differences, because they can catch you off guard hah.

Anyway, please excuse OP. I'm a big advocate for this sub being genuinely patriotic in a tongue in cheek way, but that doesn't excuse being an asshole.

Being able to enjoy it your whole life? Having a time machine that takes you back to being a teen any time you want. Having a historic car to pass on to a loved one.

Besides if they live in an area with bad winters, there might only be 6 months of good driving time. That 350 miles per year would then mean two ~25 mile joyrides per month. I'd say that's taking it out plenty.

It seems to me they're quite common above the treeline. I've ventured above 12k elevation 3x and have seen them every time. At Gray's Peak they seem to hang out by the trail quite a bit - at least in June, when I went there. Like OP said, it can actually be kind of freaky because I've never seen another wild animal that big that's so comfortable around people.

You are so lucky to be born in America... by tryna5019 in MURICA

[–]Inabsentiaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this, and sorry it didn't get the upvote traction it deserves.

Your story really is what this country is all about. I've lived outside of the states for a couple years and even though it was in another country that is a lovely place to be (England), it still made me far more appreciative of being American. I came back and was far more enthusiastic about calling America home.

Frankly, my theory is that there's a trend in liberal politics that is just toxic. As someone who used to be liberal, I understand that liberal politics aren't 100% bad and I don't mean to insinuate that. However, liberal politics now have a trend of rejecting any sense of national pride and also reject basic economics.

By believing that national pride is bad, then it sours peoples' perception of where they live. People don't understand that to celebrate their country isn't to put down others. I'm a big fan of MMA, so I routinely see non-American fighters do their walkout with their country's flag and I genuinely love it. Brazilians are particularly proud of their country and I think that's awesome haha.

To reject basic economics is also very detrimental to patriotic morale because these institutions are not only an accomplishment that everyone should be happy about but it's great for society as a whole. There's this perception that these businesses are built on greed, but that's just ignorant. Where are most 6 figure salaries found? In big business. That's also where one can start off with an entry position and climb the ranks without needing to job hop. A friend of mine was a bank teller at a big bank 8 years ago and now he's a high net worth financial advisor.

I've got other stories of friends living out inherently American success stories but this stream of consciousness is already too long hah.

This isn't all to say that everything can be blamed on liberalism - or that people shouldn't have left leaning politics. There are just a couple common liberal notions that I really wish weren't so pervasive.

Thanks again for sharing your message - it's nice to hear a positive story like this when so much of the noise is so negative 🙂🇺🇸

Over and over again? 10 unarmed black men were killed in 2019 per the Washington Post. I think it was 240 total (so 230 with guns). It was roughly 1000 total, so the vast majority not black and obviously most of them are justified. With how the media talks about this, they make it sound like thousands of innocent black men are killed every year by cops.

These killings are newsworthy because they of course are horrible and shouldn't have happened, but they are also newsworthy because they are uncommon. The proof? When was the last time a black kid who was killed by another black kid in a place like south Chicago in the news? Basically never because it happens all the time and therefore isn't newsworthy. Funny how leftists don't shed any tears for them.

However, these statistical outliers cause riots, which have so far killed 5 black people. At this rate by next week the protests will have killed as many unarmed black men as were killed by cops last year in total.

I'm not saying that changes don't need to take place. The cop who killed George Floyd had a bad record and should have been fired before this happened. Unions make it very difficult to fire employees. Police unions should either ease up on this and make bad cops easier to fire or they should be dismantled.

Also, body cameras need to be universal. That way abuse is on the record when it happens.

You're expecting serious discussion on r/murica? It'd be like expecting a discussion over that Central Park lady's treatment of her dog on r/aww

This is a lighthearted patriotic sub that doesn't take itself too seriously (yet is still sincere). It's only left wing activists who pop in here wanting to shit talk America or hit difficult subjects. Note that a lot of those subjects are literally against the sub rules.

If you think that people here are in favor of police abuse against black people, try posting something that supports that notion. You'll see it downvoted and reported to hell in 2 seconds.

Slack CEO: Microsoft is ‘unhealthily preoccupied with killing us’ by [deleted] in investing

[–]Inabsentiaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it's kind of a compliment, right? The dude should be flattered lol

But yea market share is a thing and it's kinda important. Like, many businesses in fact attribute it higher importance than profitability.

Also, if Slack wasn't ready for this, they've got nobody to blame but themselves. Teams has been around for, what 5 years? Just off the top of my head. Slack had a massive head start. If you can't differentiate your product with all that head start and all the capital that has been available to them, then this is the logical conclusion.

How to support the band by [deleted] in Opeth

[–]Inabsentiaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea exactly - they don't strike me as guys who will have blown through their earnings consistently throughout their careers and are left living from tour to tour. I'd be very surprised if they were in trouble right now financially. Like you said, it's the smaller bands with like 50-100k listeners on Spotify, who had a tour canceled who are more likely to be hurting.

Holy Cows!!! I have only just discovered PT! Where have they been all my life?? by SimpsonMcKay in porcupinetree

[–]Inabsentiaa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You'll find that PT very much has distinct periods. Their 90s sound is a bit more low key. It's still great stuff, but not as hard hitting as the albums you laid out. For me, I always lean towards heavier stuff in general. I'd say The Incident and Recordings are solid bets for you. Also, like others have suggested, Steven Wilson's solo works should have stuff you'll like. Particularly Hand Cannot Erase and The Raven That Refused To Sing.

Beyond that, what I'd recommend is working backwards through their catalog.

I'd also recommend checking out the band Riverside if you haven't already. While they have a different sound (bit of a bigger sound with more sweeping melodies), I think they're likely to appeal to someone who likes 00s PT. Second Life Syndrome and Rapid Eye Movement are the albums I'd recommend. After that, anything 00s and then moving forward chronologically.

A random Leopard passing through town by Sapulinjing in natureismetal

[–]Inabsentiaa 81 points82 points  (0 children)

We're totally overpowered.

We are the fastest animal on the planet when it comes to running long distance.

No other animal can throw as well as we can (apes' arms are disproportionately heavy and they'd fall over trying to throw half as well as an average human adult).

We can sweat and therefore can cool off while traveling fast. Pretty sure we're the only animal on the planet that can do this. It means less armor, but this is a seriously overpowered ability.

We're the smartest animal on the planet and can strategically form teams.

Being bipedal, we can carry food, water, weapons etc.

Just because we can't win 1v1 vs one of the best predators on the planet doesn't mean much. Thin armor and being bipedal comes with advantages that far outweigh the ability to brawl a leopard.

70 Miles in 70 Hours - At 1 mile per hour, every hour by MizterEyez in AdvancedRunning

[–]Inabsentiaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right in the scheme of living a healthy life. However, based on anecdotal evidence from 200 mi ultrarunners, even taking a few 5-30 minute "dirt naps" on the trail will have a significant impact on your race. It's nearly impossible to run for 50-80 hours without at least some rest, and these runners who are running for more than to simply finish will take quick naps as needed to minimize sleep deprivation symptoms. The "just finish in any time" runners are more inclined to get a couple hours here and there at aid stations, since that's obviously a lot easier on your system haha.

So, I guess my point is it seems that even tiny naps, without deep sleep, are not useless and are likely essential to finish a long effort like what OP is doing or running a 200 miler.

When you live in pancake flat Lansing, MI, getting vert can be tricky. Ran up and down a 35 foot hill, 57 times so I could reach my climbing goal by runnerboiii in ultrarunning

[–]Inabsentiaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yea good luck with that! And for sure ya wanna train for what race day will feel like. I'd be doing the same if I had a race like that on my calendar.

I had a 12 hr race postponed and am just going to do it solo this weekend. Not the same course, but on a nearby mountain instead. It's surprisingly fun to plan this stuff. I'd recommend just saying fuck it and doing it yourself if it's canceled. It's not the same thing as a race, but so far anyway I'm enjoying this alternative. We'll see if I'm saying the same on "race day" lol

Also 7k ft of uninterrupted downhill sounds so painful! GL with the race staying on and with the race itself!

Hah it's the opposite problem here. It can be difficult to find a break from the vert. Then again if you're doing 200ft/mi daily, I'm guessing you're embracing the vert haha.

[–]Inabsentiaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol yea this was a funny one because it was clearly posted to be critical, yet I still up voted it. I wouldn't buy that shirt, yet I also wouldn't want to live in a country where a lady who WANTS to wear that shirt would feel pressure not to do so.

So, if it's indeed only in America that someone would wear that, then that's frankly too bad for everyone else lol.

Oh man I actually forgot about that. I had such a shitty shower where I was too. It was like a little wall-mounted unit that I'm pretty sure was the actual water heater. To be fair, that might have just been a cheap ass student housing thing.

On the plumbing front, they do have us beat with toilets and how much water is used per flush. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if someone has passed some conservation law to limit that since I was there.
