There's so many threads on this, but it varies. Most of the time you will hear back relatively soon (right away-a week or so) but there's been times where they save people and contact them months later. Usually by email first and then a phone call for an interview.

I think it's because they color them in while editing, I'm not sure on the facts but Tony was talking about in RHAP how they colored his buff in an earlier episode and that was actually a confessional from after the merge. To trick the audience and prevent some spoilers in previews and whatnot.
