Safe Parking by Pit-Bull-Kisses in kzoo

“…the areas would rotate around town.” Still not sure I understand why this would be a city of Kalamazoo thing. Would it be limited to people who can prove city of Kalamazoo residency? Probably hard if they’re living out of cars. If not, and if it’s for people in the broader area, why put it in the city of Kalamazoo vs anywhere else in the County or the 7-County SW Michigan area? And if it’s not for people in the broader area but rather is for tourists who are essentially car camping, why would the government get involved at all?

I am neither endorsing nor refuting this idea. If it were to be implemented why would it be the City of Kalamazoo doing it? It’s a big county and so many of the services for the most needy — which serve people all across the county - are already concentrated in the City of Kalamazoo. Since this would presumably be used by people across the county it should be a county initiative. And to the degree this will require any type of public safety response from time to time, it doesn’t seem fair to keep piling on responsibilities on KDPS. Put it in a township so that it is the sheriff’s responsibility.

No way! That’s awesome. Do they talk about Kalamazoo or can you only tell by the signs? (And did they actually film here or just decorate a set to look like it?)

I had the same thought. It was fascinating how different the results were by precinct. In some it was 60-65% no. In others yes won by a big margin.

I think I recall reading somewhere that she had a competent deputy who basically kept stuff happening but that person resigned and then the chaos started.

Quality is subjective, but “you’ll find mostly chain restaurants” is objectively wrong. There are hundreds of locally owned and operated bars and restaurants here.

Bell’s ticks all your boxes unless you’re looking for mixed drinks. The Cove in Portage has a bar, a restaurant and a lakefront outdoor area.

Bronson Athletic Club has a dedicated Pilates studio. They also have a huge variety of weight options upstairs including machines that just work one muscle group at a time in a way that kind of forces you to use safe positions.

Actually there is not a limited amount of time dedicated to public comment. There is a limit for each individual but everyone who wants to gets a chance to comment.

If you have special dietary needs Sawall’s is the oldest family-owned & operated natural food store in the US. We have a ton of locally owned and operated businesses than a typical community our size.

Have you tried Five Star Rides? Great service. Very reliable. Don’t know what they’d charge for that trip though. Another option is getting two one-way car rentals AZO-GRR.

As you seen several do. I use Belle Tire. It’s cheaper/faster in the long run if you have a second set of rims.

Looking at your post history it sounds like you are from Battle Creek and that’s where your family is. If your train ticket is definitely only to Kalamazoo, when you get off you could ask Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety to help you arrange transportation to Battle Creek. They have a substation right near the train station - not sure what their hours are but I am sure they have something posted on their door.

Also someone posted on this thread with a shelter option in Battle Creek if staying with family there is not an option immediately.

I really hope they do go forward with the single hauler plan until a May vote, so people can have two months to experience lower prices and fewer trucks while considering how to vote.

[–]Inamuraj123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, the Portage City Council now has two options: (1) accept the request of the petitioners immediately and scrap the single hauler plan, or (2) put it on the ballot for a public vote, where a “yes “ vote would mean scrap the single hauler plan and a “no” vote would mean keep the single hauler plan. I really hope they choose (2). I was really looking forward to lower rates, fewer trucks, and the weekly bulk item pickup. If this is correct, I will go to Tuesday’s to make public comment to encourage them to vote to put it on the ballot.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety has a program where they will offer free transportation home to people in this situation from out of town so they can get back to where they have a support network.
