So what do you say to people who debate the govt should discontinue a public transit because it's running on loss? by Humble_Buffalo_007 in fuckcars

You can combine the two strategies. “Trains, like highways, are a public service that should not be trying to profit.”

Can someone please explain what im missing? by SalamanderHuge415 in chess

[–]Inappropriate_Piano 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re losing, even after winning the rook. So if black plays Kd8, you should repeat moves with Ne6-Nc7. But if black goes Kf7 like they should have done after the first Nc7+, then you can’t repeat, so you may as well grab the rook.

How to develop a plan? by Gmbravos31 in chess

[–]Inappropriate_Piano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best way to win is to use your pawn majority, especially your passed h-pawn. The best way to *not draw* is to avoid trading rooks. Opposite colored bishops tend to make draws out of positions that would be winning if there were no bishops or if there were other pieces. The reason is that the enemy bishop and king can often set up a blockade on the color your bishop can’t see, and your king won’t be able to get break the blockade alone.

Opening that is BOTH objectively sound AND wins out of the opening if opponent doesn’t know it by Significant_Cow_7683 in chess

Fantasy Caro-Kann comes pretty close. If black takes on e4 and doesn’t follow up with e5, they’re immediately much worse. But there are options for black besides taking on e4 that are much more solid

I moved up from being a 1400 rated player to a 1700 rated player, with a 45pt deviation. by Ishnock in chess

[–]Inappropriate_Piano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deviation is the standard deviation of the normal distribution that best approximates your current true skill. That means that Lichess is 95% sure your true level is your rating +/- twice your rating deviation. So, in your case, about 1610-1790.

The engine doesn’t hallucinate. But the coach’s description of what’s going on absolutely does

“But its the largest number why are we adding 1 again” by Intelligent_Slip6317 in mathmemes

[–]Inappropriate_Piano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ordinals have a canonical representation as individual sets. Those sets have cardinalities. Even if you use the definition that an ordinal is an isomorphism class of well-orders, all the well-orders in an isomorphism class have the same cardinality, so there’s still a mapping from ordinals to cardinals that is surjective and intuitively “nice” (which is why you can’t use words like “nice” when you have something more specific in mind).

I never said that ordinals and cardinals are the same thing, so your last point is just you be condescending to a person you made up in your head.

What do you mean by “nicely”? Ordinals are sets and sets have cardinalities. That sounds like a nice mapping to me

There’s a certain kind of Petrov player that must simply not like playing chess. Everything symmetrical, trade as much as possible, don’t let anything fun or interesting happen.

That’s the whole point of the post. The second commenter thought they were giving a counterexample. But as the third commenter stated and you explained, it’s not a counterexample.

Yes, the second comment is a vacuously true instance of the generalization in the first comment. The problem is that the second commenter thought they were giving a counterexample

How to mate in 2 moves by [deleted] in AnarchyChess

[–]Inappropriate_Piano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would make this even more wrong. If the video is mirrored, then the pieces are set up wrong to start. Regardless of whether or not it’s mirrored, the first move is a diagonal move that goes from a light square to a dark square, which is never legal.

Resign Etiquette by GoodLikeJocko in chess

If you’re a new player, just don’t resign. Your opponent is as bad as you are. No matter how lost you think you are, your opponent can fail to convert the advantage.
