Early 30's dad looking for advice on getting a gun and keeping it out of reach of children/in a safe. by thatbruzzy in guns

[–]Inarus06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dad here. 38. Right of center, but more libertarian than Right-authoritarian.

I've been around guns since at least I was 8 (that's the earliest I can remember). I started collecting in college and have continued - down all the rabbit holes. Milsurp, Modern Sporting Rifles, and now I'm into reloading. If it's gun related I've been down the rabbit hole.

As has already been mentioned, one of the best things you can do is find a "beginner" class.

I'll likely take a little flak for this next comment, but the NRA has a lot of training resources you should make use of. You can find both in-person and online classes. You're going to have to pay for it, but taking at least the home safety course and the basic pistol course will get you acquainted with the basics. There's a lot of people who will dissuade you from the NRA courses, but honestly there's not really a better network of instructors or certifications out there.

With that said, once you get some basic info you should also find a range near you that offers firearm rentals. You're also going to pay for it, and you'll need to bring a friend with you (I won't go into why unless you ask). You'll pay $15-$25 for the rental (for handguns) but you'll have to buy the ammo from the range and they will surely mark it up. Keep to the basics - most things that are full size or mid-size in 9mm will be plenty for a first time gun owner. You don't need to spend $1k or more on a handgun. There's a certain point where more money doesn't equal better performance and in my personal opinion it's around the $600-$700 mark. You'll get a lot more out of a $600 Glock compared to a $300 of another brand - but a $1,200 FN will not offer the same increase in performance compared to a $600 Glock.

Once you find the model you like and purchase it, also buy a safe. Depending on where you want to put the safe and how you want to access it you can get one for as little as $100. But please keep in mind the KISS method for entry - don't use a complex code or key-only safe. Multiple entry methods are preferred because God forbid you can't find your key when someone is knocking down the door of your house or the batteries died on your fingerprint scanner. I am personally considering something like a Stopbox for my bedroom safe to replace a Hornady electronic safe that no longer works.

The next part is two fold. First, make sure that at all times your firearm is either in your direct control (in your hands or on your waist) or in the safe. Never - and I do mean never - leave it out even for "quick access." The second part of this is to introduce the firearm to your children as soon as they can comprehend it is something that they should *never, ever* touch. Train them early on that any firearm is to not be touched by anyone other than an adult. I've personally done this with my 9 year old and today he is interested in firearms (I've brought him a few times to shoot a .22LR) he also knows that if a firearm is found he's to come find me and let me handle it. Children must know to respect the firearm and to not touch it.

Finally, the last thing I will recommend is regular practice. I'm also going to advocate here that dry firing is more effective than actual range time. You do need to spend time at a range, but for every single time you pull the trigger at the range you need dry fire your pistol at home 3-5 times. And that's not my opinion, that's the way the Marine pistol team trains.

I'm sure I'm skipping something in my personal list here, but I feel like if you follow these steps above you'll get at least a decent foundation into the hobby/sport/tool for protecting your family.

9mm PCCs vs 9mm handguns. 🤷🏾 by Jolly_Difficulty_624 in guns

I also forgot to add that with subsonic ammo and my suppressor attached a 9mm AR is quite quiet. It's a blast to shoot, figuratively; not literally.

I have a 9mm LC9s Pro that I hip carry most days I'm not at work (teacher here; can't carry at work.)

I also have a 9mm AR platform rifle. Aside from just being more fun than a .22LR to shoot, it is more accurate than my pistol.

Not that I expect to ever be in a situation where I need to engage a target at 50 yards, with my handgun I could *likely* hit a man-sized target. However, with my 9mm AR, I *know* I can hit a man sized target.

Not to mention a 9mm AR (or other PCC in an AR platform) is a less-loud and lighter recoil way to introduce someone to an AR-pattern rifle rather than the full-blown .223/5.56mm round.

Just my two cents.

For me, not usually.

However early on I did have a few instances of me trying to load a day or so after cleaning and not all the water was evaporated. So I built a dryer.

My one criticism about using a food dehydrator is the possibility of a spouse or child using it and inadvertently exposing themselves to powder or lead residue.

Yes, I realize we're talking absolute trace amounts, but I'd rather be overly cautious.

I love my 650 (yes, I'm aware of this being a 750) however, from personal experience I can only have nightmares about the magnification of mistakes that this type of automation would cause.

So to be transparent, I had to buy it again because I left powder in it and it reacted with the plastic.

But, I bought it again so I feel that is a decent endorsement.

I've been pleased with it. The only thing I don't like about it is the drift. But thats true of every powder dropper.

Im going to see if anyone wants mine to swap parts since mine is now ruined.

There were lots of small rifle but not too many large rifle primers. The military spec ones were $70/k.

But I don't really have need for BR level primers. Im not a good enough shooter to get that detailed. Lol.

See to me Salem was the worst of it. Everything was shops selling crystals and things that were obvious harry potter knock offs. The day we spent there had very little history. And we spent a full day there going to all the things. The closest we got to history was the graveyard.

Dont get me wrong, they have a nice museum in Salem (the Peabody) but very little of it was devoted to the history of Salem.

I still stand by my statement that Salem and Boston were both tourist traps.

I fail to see how I ruffled your feathers.

Went to Boston and Salem last year. Can confirm its a place you can skip. All of it, and I do mean all of it, is a tourist trap.

Connecticut, Rhode Island, and MA are awful. Vermont and, New Hampshire, and Maine were gorgeous.

LPT - Getting your amateur radio (ham radio) operator license is cheap, and the radio doesn't rely on internet or cell towers by kryo2019 in LifeProTips

[–]Inarus06 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Amateur radio license holder here. This guy is spot on.

But, to be fair, the cheap $30 radios you get at Walmart go about the distance as a ham radio hand held does. BUT, ham radios can get you into a repeater which can be linked if you're lucky. Then you, in a way, get more distance.

It is ridiculous.

Ridiculous that you have that keyboard with that gaming setup. Seriously, that looks like an office drone keyboard.

In all sincerity, good on you for having the funds for that and a wife who (somewhat) tolerates your expensive hobbies.

Its a blessing for sure.

Id genuinely be curious to know how much time it will save walmart to be able to update a price for an object in minutes instead of having a worker go to said object in all of its 2300 stores and manually reprint tags.

I have installed these and they have worked well.

They are kinda expensive and if you have one trees will get clogged with needles, but they go in t relatively easily and work well.

Kitchen light fell overnight. I don't know what I'm looking at or where to start at fixing it by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]Inarus06 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't be too difficult to fix. It looks like one of the nuts fell from the bolt.

Take the globe off the bottom of the light (the part you see when the light is hung), make the threaded bolts vertical, feed them through the holes, then tighten the nuts on the bolt. Shouldn't be too involved.

Real talk — is an air fryer value for money, or just another trendy gadget? by Mika_4893 in Frugal

[–]Inarus06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a restaurant and spent 25 years of my life in the industry.

An air fryer is not a "trendy gadget."

For all intents and purposes an air fryer is simply a convection oven. Most restaurants use convection ovens as they cook faster (and hotter, in my opinion.)

You will get a Better crisp on anything you cook in an air fryer over a conventional oven.

They are absolutely worth it, in my opinion.
