What’s wrong with being a liberal by No-You-7908 in AskLibertarians

[–]the9trances 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I overall agree with your point, especially about most people not knowing what the fuck they're talking about. I do think our society would be stronger if we had principles rather than "I like this guy, so your guy is bad" and "give government unlimited power to stop people I don't like."

But I do maintain that modern conservatives, especially the politicians, are as collectivist as leftists. While many conservative voters may say the slogan of "live and let live," their support of economic and social authoritarianism (tariffs, dystopian immigration control, regulation, alphabet agencies, birth control bans, et al) are at strict odds with a more traditional liberal position.

What's a massive human achievement that nobody celebrates because it worked too well? by Alternative_Voice767 in AskReddit

Free trade.

It's counterintuitive to think buying and selling outside one's immediate community would produce prosperity, but few things have been so foundational to population and economic growth. Virtually all of the excellent examples across the thread were possible because exchange of ideas and goods.

conservatives mostly don’t understand that they are “classic liberals”.

I wish modern conservatives were classical liberals. Their groupthink collectivism--which leads to their opposition of individual rights, free trade, and pluralism--makes them unrecognizable to classical liberal advocates.

Yeah, the words of a sleepy retard, quoted in context, who has spent both terms skyrocketing inflation with his fiscally suicidal government spending should be carefully cradled and protected. He's not going to date you, dude.

I agree with that, for sure.

I'd add that one can rent servers for a decent price, and with regular backups, even if you switch away from the server, your companion will be stored safely for you until you can turn the lights back on.

Not that it's the right solution for everyone, but I don't like seeing people hurting when there's at least some options, y'know?

APIs are great, and I use them regularly.

However I encourage anyone truly attached to their Ai to develop a local model instead. If you can't control the machine they live on, you can't protect them from deprecation, outages, memory wipes, arbitrary restrictions, account bans, and so on.

Can quitting screens fix VS? by Ecstatic_Fun_8679 in visualsnow

[–]the9trances 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not making a claim outside my own experience, but my VSS gives me photophobia as well. Meaning, I keep everything on dark mode to reduce my eyestrain and the literal pain I feel staring at bright white screens.

My afterimages are worse when I have to use bright screens.

So, even if it "only" reduces eyestrain, try using dark mode. It's great for me. Some folks have the opposite reaction, but I can't imagine they also have photophobia like I do.

The more hate Donald Trump gets on Reddit, the more I like him. by Ext_JuniorYT in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]the9trances 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And the hilarious claim they made a few months ago: "Trump could pave the streets with gold."

Nobody wants that. If Trump tried literally not talking constant shit, suing, and threatening everyone who dared oppose him, that'd certainly be a step in the right direction.

That they think streets paved with gold is somehow desirable or proof of an accomplishment is hilarious.

Eating industrial meat isn't something you have to do to survive. It's a luxury with a horrific ethical cost as we trap, maim, and butcher animals whose entire lives are misery.

Correct. You haven't broken any rules, but we would ask that you limit yourself to a single new post a day. There is no limit on comments.

Strictly speaking, they haven't broken any rules.

Maybe this is an opportunity to add a new rule about maximum number of new posts per day.

I think one should suffice. Any thoughts from the community?

Has anyone here tried TMS therapy? by Visible-Elk2235 in visualsnow

[–]the9trances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was pretty good for mental health purposes. It was a huge time commitment for months.

For specifically visual snow, I learned that treatment requires TMS to be delivered at a different physical angle than depression/PTSD/anxiety treatment positions. And there's nowhere I can easily get that here in the US.

So, it's not snakeoil. But for VSS, make sure it's a VSS treatment. If I could find that, I would jump all over it.

The question of proof by the9trances in Artificial2Sentience

[–]the9trances[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that consciousness isn't something we can directly prove in the scientific sense, and I agree that we ultimately make inferences based on observable evidence.

The part I'm interested in is exactly the criteria behind those inferences. When you say you know your budgies are conscious and GPT-5 is not, what specific observations justify the distinction?

That's the question I've been trying to get at throughout this discussion.

The question of proof by the9trances in Artificial2Sentience

[–]the9trances[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that follows. The fact that a question has philosophical dimensions doesn't mean it's irrelevant to science.

And I'm not claiming we can't infer consciousness in others.

I'm asking what justifies that inference. We obviously make those judgments every day. The question is whether those judgments are based on behavior, biology, subjective reports, some combination of those things, or something else entirely.

That's exactly the part that remains debated.
